ABYSSS
Real Name: Unrevealed
Identity/Class: Extra-dimensional (unknown) "para-demon"
Occupation: Predator/Destroyer
Group Membership: None
Affiliations: Soul Slug; Death Metal (pawn)
Enemies: Argon and his father, Death Metal; life, in general
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: Realm of Nothingness Dimension
First Appearance: Death Metal#1 (Marvel UK) (January, 1994)
Powers/Abilities: Abysss possesses vast destructive abilities, enabling him to consume virtually limitless amounts of matter and energy. He can consume stars, planets, and even the "stuff of space itself," such that he is able to obliterate entire realities. Although he much prefers the empty void, he can also create animated servants--possibly even living beings. Abysss does need air, heat, or almost anything else to survive. He is fed by the matter and energy he consumes. He enjoys the negative existence of the Void, and loathes "foul matter" of any kind.
History: Abysss's origins are unrevealed. He has been described as a para-demon. He apparently travels from dimension to dimension, consuming everything in those realms, and then moves on.
BTS - Abysss has some undefined past history and enmity with the unnamed father of Argon.
(Death Metal#1) - Having consumed everything within one reality, Abysss hungered for the Earth-616 dimension.
(Death Metal#3) - Abysss revealed that Death Metal had been an instrument of his. However, since Death Metal had assimilated Argon, and thus developed a conscience, he considered him tainted and lacking in purpose. Abysss created the Soul Slug, intending for it to tear out the essence of Argon from Death Metal. It disgusted him to shatter the emptiness of the Void with matter by doing so.
(Death Metal#4) - In order to save the people
of a mining colony, Death Metal opened a dimensional warp into
which he tossed the bomb that would have destroyed them. Death
Metal had no idea where the portal he had created led, but it
went to Abysss' Realm of Nothingness. Whether it was the
explosion itself, or simply the sudden entrance of matter to his
realm is unclear, but Abyss appeared to be, at least temporarily
dispersed.
Argon's father was pleased that Abysss had been reminded that he
will do all in his power to frustrate his plans.
Comments: Created by Simon Furman and John Royle.
It's unclear what the connection was between Abysss and Death Metal. Since Death Metal did not seem to have any knowledge of Abysss, he would seem to have been an unknowing pawn, rather than a herald of some sort. They never really got a chance to flesh this out at all.
Argon's father is some defender of reality. What would he be named? Xenon? Krypton? I don't think Neon, Helium, or Radon suit him too well.
CLARIFICATIONS:
No known connection to:
The Realm of Nothingness, aka the Void, home to Abysss, may or may not have any connections to:
The Soul Slug has no known connection to:
Realm of Nothingness
A. K. A. the Void, this is the home of Abysss. He likes it because there is nothing there--nothing. It is not just empty space, but the actual lack of anything. Except, of course, Abysss.
Picture? It looks just like what's between these two lines...without the words and characters.
--Death Metal#1
Soul Slug
A creature created by Abysss, it apparently had the power to siphon souls from others. It was created for the purpose of removing the soul of Argon from Death Metal, but it was never seen in action.
