EXAMINER

Real Name: None

Identity/Class: Extra-terrestrial (Slig race) robot

Occupation: Warrior/Analyzer for the Slig race

Group Membership: None

Affiliations: Agent of the Slig

Enemies: West Coast Avengers (Dr. Pym, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Mockingbird, Moon Knight, Tigra, Wonder Man)

Base of Operations: Slig Scouting Ship

Appearances: West Coast Avengers II#30 (March, 1988)

Powers: The Examiner is programmed with various forms of combat. Its initial power level is undefined, but once it has been demolished it can be reassembled again by the Sligs, making it immune to the same type of attack as previously destroyed it. It can do this successively, eliminating sources of weakness for each combat. However, each increase in power puts an additional strain on the starship which beams it its power.

History: The second Slig race had planned to conquer Earth, but had heard that it had shelled out some defeats to powerful races, such as the Kree and Skrulls. Not seeking to rush in blindly, they sent a scouting party to test, analyze, and hopefully defeat the humans.

The scouting party managed to temporarily capture Wonder Man, and then used him as bait to draw in the rest of the West Coast Avengers. When the Avengers got close enough, the Sligs beamed them and Wonder Man to an alien dimension. The Sligs would keep the rest of the Avengers out of phase so they couldn't interfere while they were tested one by one by the Examiner. The Sligs would rebuild the Examiner after each defeat, making it progressively stronger after its defeats by Wonder Man, Tigra, Mockingbird, Hawkeye, Iron Man (Tony Stark), and Dr. Pym.

The Sligs' power batteries were under a terrible strain, but they figured there was no way Moon Knight could take out the now virtually invulnerable Examiner. However, Khonshu revealed that Moon Knight could draw power from the thousands of moons present in that dimension, and he tore the Examiner to shreds. The scouting ship's batteries overloaded and exploded, but not before it could beam back the information it had learned from the battles. However, the Sligs' computers incorrectly interpreted the data, making the Sligs believe that Earth was inhabited by beings each possessing the composite power of the Avengers.

Comments: Created by Al Milgrom and Mike Machlan.

This story was based on a variation (or reversal) of the fable about the five blind men who each felt a different part of an elephant and each got a completely different idea of its true appearance.

...And in this issue, we learned that Moon Knight has the potential for Class 100 strength if he has enough moons around him. I'll file that in the "What the frick?" category.

The race in this issue, the Slig, is significantly different in appearance than the Slig race seen in Fantastic Four I#209. I am classifying them as separate until I learn differently.
