History: (Fantastic Four I#379)- Dr. Gittelsohn was placed in charge of Dr. Doom's "Project: Space Probe", his latest attempt to locate new sources of alien power. As Doom checked in with Gittelsohn for a progress report, Gittelsohn informed him that the probe had made contact with a powerful alien lifeform, and that he had begun to lure it to earth. Doom was pleased by this, and informed Gittelsohn that he would continue to live-- for awhile longer.
(Fantastic Four I#380)- As the alien reached earth, it suddenly disappeared from Gittelsohn's tracking devices. Fearful of what Doom would do if he found out, Gittelsohn authorized the formation of search parties to locate the creature, which proved to be a malevolent being known as the Hunger. After at least two patrols-- and several villagers-- were slain by the Hunger, Gittelsohn went to inform Doom of what had happened, unwilling to send more men to their deaths. However, just as he confronted his master, the Hunger assaulted Castle Doom itself.
(Fantastic Four I#381)- When the Fantastic Four arrived to battle the Hunger, Doom sent Gittelsohn in a combat craft to aid them, and Gittelsohn drove the Hunger off with particle beams. He then extended Doom's offer of an alliance, and brought them to Castle Doom where they made plans to defeat the Hunger. Doom and Gittelsohn pretended to procure Mr. Fantastic's assistance in sending the Hunger back into space, but secretly, Doom still intended to siphon the Hunger's power for himself. When Mr. Fantastic was struck by the Hunger while carrying Doom's cables, the power surge caused an explosion in Doom's device which slew Gittelsohn.
