GLOM

Real Name: Unrevealed

Identity/Class: Extraterrestrial (race unknown)

Occupation: Warrior for Shiar Empire

Group Membership: Shi'ar Imperial Guard (possibly a branch, rather than the royal elite)

Affiliations: Moondancer, Neutron, Onslaught, Solar Wind, Voyager

Enemies: Antibody (three words: Dee, Lish, Uss), Quasar (antagonist-he finds the Quantum energy quite tasty)

Known Relatives: None

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Shiar Galaxy

First Appearance: (Illusory image only) Quasar#32 (March, 1992), (actual) Quasar#33 (April, 1992);

Powers/Abilities: Glom is able to eat virtually any form of matter or energy. It is always hungry and becomes extremely excited when it encounters a new form of matter or energy that it can consume. Often other Guardsmen are forced to restrain Glom from eating something of importance to them. It is uncertain how much Glom can consume before it becomes full or what it would take to overload it. As Glom doesn't appear to have much room for a digestive tract, it is possible that any matter it consumes is rapidly converted into energy for it to absorb or expel.

History: Glom's past is unrevealed. At some point Glom became a member of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard.

(Quasar#33) - Glom was first encountered during the Kree/Shi'ar war, also known as Operation: Galactic Storm. While his teammates fought Quasar in order to wrest custody of the Kree Captain Atlas away from him, Glom consumed one of Quasar's quantum energy shields, which housed Binary at the time. When the Guard gained possession over the quantum energy construct containing Atlas from Quasar, Glom could hardly wait to eat it.

(Avengers West Coast#82) - Fellow Guardsmen had to restrain Glom when it wanted to eat the Kree Nega Bands.

(Quasar#46) - Glom was next seen on Earth. It traveled there with fellow Guardsmen Voyager and Moondancer in order to retrieve Neutron, another Guardsman who had been missing in action. Neutron had been stranded in deep space by Quasar during the war, and had traveled to Earth with the aid of the Presence, seeking to obtain vengeance on Quasar. Neutron had become part of a three-way struggle against Quasar as well as the extra-dimensional criminal Quagmire, who had merged with an Antibody from the alternate reality of the New Universe.  A group known as the Shock Troop, who had been investigating the output of Darkforce, managed to gather all of the forms of Antibody into a single being. At that point, Glom suddenly leapt forward and consumed the Darkforce being. It is uncertain if the Antibody was also destroyed or merely dispatched back to its reality.

Comments: Glom was created by Mark Gruenwald (writer), Greg Capullo (artist), and Harry Candelario (inker).

It is uncertain whether it is a mutant or mutated member of another race, such as the Judans, or whether Glom is a unique being.

Glom, although very single-minded, is usually an entertaining character. Definitely worthy of further appearances.

Most, if not all of the original batch of the Imperial Guard are directly patterned after (homage or parody) DC's Legion of Super-Heroes, much like the Squadron Supreme is a take off on the Justice League. Glom, who appeared much later, is likely a derivative of Matter-Eater Lad (can't beat that for a clever name), as pointed out by Derek .
