History: (Captain Marvel VI#13 (fb))- Nine years ago Magister Pop, ruler of the planet Illera (or at least a portion of it) led an army into the planet Kahafan and liberated its people from the tyranny of the conquering Badoon. The Illerans were thanked and given much gratitude for this. However, after freeing the people of Kahafan, Magister Pop ordered his soldiers to stay there and help them rebuild etc. Eventually, after thirty Kahafan years, the people of Kahafan just wanted the Illerans to leave them to rebuild for themselves, and started a resistance against Magister Pop's Illerans.
(Captain Marvel VI#13)- Magister Pop was meeting with his advisors and expressed how shocked he was that the people of Kahafan were so ungrateful for their rescue. He paid no heed to his advisors telling him that the Kahafan were simply scared that the Illearans would be conquerors. Before a resolution could be reached, Burstaar, on behalf of the vengeance-seeking Badoon, burst into the room and was about to kill Magister Pop, but was killed by Captain Marvel before he could. The Magister thanked captain Marvel, whom then left. Later on, Captain Marvel continuously interfered in the lives, customs, and government of the people of Illera and Magister Pop specifically, forcing them to change their national anthem, taking the Magister's bed for himself, and recommending they return to a polytheistic religion before the Magister finally snapped and yelled at Captain Marvel that they wanted him to leave. They were grateful for his rescue but wanted to be left to their own destiny. The Magister claimed to have learned the lesson that Marvel was trying to teach them. However, after Captain Marvel left, the Magister revealed he had learned nothing and started to think of the Kahafan problem once more. However, Captain Marvel empowered Burstarr's corpse and he killed the Magister.
Comments: Created by Peter David, Michael Ryan, and Chris Sotomoyor.
The fact that it was nine years ago that Illera freed Kahafan from the Badoon does not mean that it occurred in 1994. It occurred nine years prior to the story no matter what year you read the story in.
A strong planet invades a relatively weak one
and liberates it from a tyrant. They then stay and help rebuild, but the
citizens of that small nation don't want the strong nation there and react with
strong resistance. Sound familiar? I believe that Peter David wrote this story
trying to relate to the reader his opinion of the Iraq situation. Actually, Peter David has said that
to the contrary, the point of the story was to highlight the hypocrisy of human nature-- Iraq was just
the most obvious real world parallel readers drew. --Prime Ed-ternal
And perhaps if the strong nation left the weaker nation too
soon and the tyrants easily reclaimed that nation, then a more realistic real
world parallel would have been made, rather than some idealistic, liberal
claptrap.
I REALLY enjoy Peter David's work, but this story was just
irritating.
