First Appearance: Giant-Size Spider-Man#4 (April, 1975)
Powers/Abilities: Magnum has some degree of superhuman strength which has varied from enhanced human to nearly Class 100; his durability, etc. have similarly varied. His greatest power is the generation of earthquakes and the release of vibratory force.
Magnum has worn gloves that release sleep gas and that fire force blasts from the finger tips.
Magnum has used many soldiers using a variety of advanced weaponry, including the Mandroids, Terrordomes, and a variety of destructive weaponry.
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 159 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
History:
It is
unclear whether Magnum had superhuman abilities since birth,
gained them via mutation somehow, or whether he was just
initially very tough, though not superhumanly so.
(Giant-Size Spider-Man#4 (fb) - BTS) - Moses Magnum was born in Ethiopia, fifteen years before its invasion by Italy (see comments). At the time of the invasion, Magnum became fascinated with weapons and joined Italy's leader against his own people.
(Deathlok II#23 (fb) - BTS) - Magnum became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America.
(Giant-Size Spider-Man#4 (fb) - BTs) - At some point he became the head of the DRC, a weapons manufacturer. Magnum was hired by an unspecified government to test a devastating biochemical gas on people. His men began kidnapping people around the world; these people were taken to Magnum's compound in South America, where helicopter would drop the gas on them.
(Power Man Annual#1 (fb) - BTS) - Amongst those slain by Magnum's toxic gas testing were the family of Thomas Sheridan.
(Giant-Size Spider-Man#4) - The Punisher and Spider-Man stormed DRC to stop Magnum's gas experimentation. As intended, Spider-Man was captured and brought to Magnum's testing compound, where the Punisher met him, and the two proceeded to take apart the compound and Magnum's security. Spider-Man confronted Magnum himself, and was nearly overpowered, but the Punisher then shot a canister of Magnum's gas and the two heroes trapped Magnum in the chamber with the leaking gas. They returned to the US, leaving Magnum for dead.
(Power Man Annual#1 (fb)) - Protecting himself with a self-contained anti-gas body suit, Magnum survived and escaped, swearing vengeance.
(Power Man Annual#1 (fb) - BTS) - Hoping to recoup his substantial losses, Magnum initiated a mining operation on the island of Katsyu Shima, trying to tap the mineral and energy potential of the Earth's magma core. Samantha Sheridan, a geophysicist working as an environmental consultant on the Alaska pipeline, detected a hairline fault connecting the Alaskan and Japanese fault systems, which in turn made up major elements of the Pacific Rim. She predicted that Magnum's laser drill would, upon blasting through to the Earth's core, tear the Katsyu Fault wide open, which would topple the Pacific Rim like a line of dominos, triggering earthquakes along the Japanese Fault, the Alaskan San Andreas Fault, etc.
Magnum sought Samantha Sheridan to assist him in controlling the laser drill's effects.
Unbeknownst by Magnum, his agent Sakura was loyal to a mysterious Council, who wished Samantha Sheridan dead for reasons of their own.
(Power Man Annual#1 (fb) - BTS) - Amanda Sheridan, grandmother of Thomas, sought out the Punisher to kill Magnum, but found him unavailable. She sent other agents after Magnum, but they all disappeared.
(Power Man Annual#1 (fb) - BTS) - Amanda Sheridan hired Power Man to kill Moses Magnum, as well as to protect her great-granddaughter, Samantha, whom she believed Magnum intended to abduct to use in his project. Cage agreed to protect Samantha and to stop Magnum and his plot, but refused to kill him. Amanda sent him to Tokyo, Japan, where he met up with Samantha.
(Power Man Annual#1) - Magnum's agents ambushed Samantha Sheridan. Power Man was on hand to fight them off, but he was then struck from behind by Magnum himself, who knocked him to the ground and incapacitated both Cage and Samantha with some sleep gas. Magnum and his men loaded the two in their plane to Katsyu Shima. Upon awakening, Cage overheard Sakura speaking through a hidden wrist comlink to the Council, who ordered him to slay Sheridan immediately. Though chained, Cage assaulted Sakura, stopping him from killing Sheridan. However, Magnum then opened a door below Cage and Sakura--whom Magnum had suspected of treachery, which Cage confirmed, dropping them both out of the plane.
Cage survived the fall and broke Samantha out of her prison cell, after which she led him Magnum's laser drill. They were discovered by Magnum and his men, who began firing upon them. Cage took out Magnum's men and then confronted Magnum himself. Cage eventually managed to overpower Magnum, who fled, returning with a laser to kill him. However, a massive earthquake then occurred, bringing the facility down upon their ears. Cage fled with Sheridan, while Magnum fell down the hole below his laser drill.
(Classic X-Men#25 (fb)) - As Magnum fell towards certain death, he suddenly found himself restrained in a chamber of the immortal mutant Apocalypse, who offered him power and his life if he agreed to serve him, with the alternate to being returned to falling down the drill pit if he refused. Magnum agreed to serve Apocalypse in his efforts to cause chaos and strife, thus strengthening humanity in his eyes. Apocalypse apparently granted Magnum the ability to generate concussive force and seismic tremors.
(X-Men I#118 (fb) - BTS) - Magnum purchased several Mandroids.
(X-Men I#118 (fb) - BTS / 119 (fb) - BTS) - They who wield Power supplied technology to Moses Magnum, which amplified his Apocalypse-granted power. Magnum set up a base in a small group of volcano islets in the Kuril Chain (some distance from Japan. Magnum sent a message to the Agarashima, a port of the Japanese isle of Honshu, stating that it would be destroyed at 8:00 AM. He then used his "Magnum Force" power to disrupt the fault lines beneath the Agarashima, causing massive earthquakes that caused fuel explosions, resulting in a devastating firestorm.
(X-Men I#118) - When Sunfire and the X-Men opposed Magnum's plans, he sent the Mandroids against them. The heroes eventually overpowered the Mandroids, at which point Magnum projected a hologram of himself, issuing an ultimatum to the prime minister of Japan: They had 24 hours to acclaim Magnum sole, absolute ruler of Japan, or he would sink the entire nation.
(X-Men I#119) - The X-Men and Sunfire assaulted Magnum's base on several levels. Magnum held his own against the combined power of Colossus, Cyclops, Sunfire, and Wolverine, after which he unleashed more Mandroids against them while he prepared to fulfill his threat to destroy Japan if attacked. Entering his amplifier, Magnum directed his full power at Japan, but found it countered by the sonic force of the X-Men's Banshee. In a fierce struggle of wills and power, Banshee successfully contained Magnum's force, which shattered Magnum's volcano base. For a long time, Banshee lost the use of his power due to the injuries in his vocal cords from this massive strain.
(Deathlok II#11) -
High-Tech broke into Magnum Munitions and stole a computer disc
containing files on the use of prosthetics, escaping from
Magnum's agent, Mr. Lawson in the process. Magnum sent Lawson to
retrieve the information, which he did via tracing a signal
released from the file once opened at Stark Prosthetics by
Curtiss Carr, High-Tech's true identity. Information in the file
also attracted the attention of Deathlok (Michael Collins), who
assisted High-Tech in fighting off Lawson, who attacked them in
one of Magnum's massive Terrordome assault weapons.
Magnum instructed his employee Mr. Edgerton to
have Lawson bailed out of prison and then killed. He insisted
that all traces to Magnum Munitions be destroyed, and then
demanded to learn everything there was to know about Deathlok.
(Deathlok II#22) - Magnum appeared before the board at AIM world headquarters (in Boca Caliente?), requesting they withdraw their bid for a defense contract so that Magnum Munitions could obtain it. When they refused, he generated and earthquake that collapsed the building, killing those within it and destroying their factory complex. With AIM now unable to fulfill the weapons contract, he knew that it would go over to him. He intended to use the money from the multi-billion dollar contract to outfit his army.
(Deathlok II#23 (fb) - BTS) - Magnum and his army took over the African nation of Canaan, usurping the power of its king, Baru, thus acquiring diplomatic immunity. He used the leftover money from contract to broaden Canaan's industrial base. He also naturalized an undetermined, but large, number of African-Americans as citizens of Canaan.
(Deathlok II#22-23) - Magnum sent his agent, the Phreak, to steal a classified military file from Wakanda. The Phreak was foiled and the file preserved by Deathlok, who had been summoned to Wakanda by the Black Panther to help them with computer problems. Meanwhile, he sent another agent, armed with a Terrordome, to steal a paper file from Wakanda's security system. W'Kabi and the Black Panther managed to destroy the Terrordome and stop its operator, after which Deathlok revealed that he had traced Phreak to Canaan. Traveling to Canaan to discuss the matter with King Baru, they learned that he had been overthrown by Magnum, who slew the Terrordome operator for his failure. To avoid a diplomatic incident, the Panther and Deathlok left. Magnum sent another agent, Killjoy, to assassinate the Panther, to throw Wakanda into chaos so that he could implement his plans without its interference.
(Deathlok II#23) - Magnum made a public speech, declaring Canaan the homeland of African-Americans, revealing that he had recruited a "Talented Tenth," the cream of Black America to pave the way for his plan.
(Deathlok II#23-24) - Deathlok and the Black Panther defeated Killjoy, though they both received heavy injuries in the process.
(Deathlok II#24) - Magnum appeared as a hologram before Deathlok, making an offer to join him in establishing the African-American homeland in Canaan and requesting his aid in assuring its economic independence by taking Wakanda's Vibranium mound. Deathlok refused, at which point Magnum sent a squadron of Terrordomes to assault Wakanda's capitol in an effort to take the Vibranium by force.
(Deathlok II#25) - In the course of the ensuing battle, Deathlok confronted Magnum himself, defeating him after a short struggle. Without Magnum's leadership, the forces of Wakanda soon routed Magnum's armies.
(Avengers III#9 (fb) - BTS) - Apocalypse confronted Magnum, punishing him for his failures by destabilizing his powers, so that he triggered earthquakes any time he contacted solid ground
(Avengers III#9 (fb) - BTS) - Magnum's agents created the Evangeline, an immense floating resort registered out of Alberia. The Evangeline remained floating at all times to prevent Magnum's out of control powers from activating.
(Avengers III#9 (fb) - BTS) - Magnum learned of an experimental Seismic Cannon, designed by Rand-Meachum to control and ameliorate the tectonic forces that control earthquakes. He made plans to steal this device in an effort to stabilize his powers.
The hero Triathlon learned of this plot.
(Avengers III#8 (fb) - BTS) - Magnum's Magnum Shells hijacked a plane flying from Tierra Verde. Upon that plane was Silverclaw, whom the Magnum Shells coerced into following their commands by threatening to kill their hostages. The plane landed at Kennedy Airport.
(Avengers III#8) - The Magnum Shells, assisted by Silverclaw, attempted to capture a plane containing an experimental
The Magnum Shells succeeded in trapping the
Avengers--who had arrived to oppose them--within a cage generated
by their Powerpodium, at which point Magnum himself appeared via
hologram. Before he could announce his demands, however, the hero
Triathlon appeared and destroyed the podium, freeing the
Avengers and dispersing Magnum's transmission signal. However,
Magnum's agents used a Magnum Force weapon to shatter three
buildings, forcing the Avengers to focus their efforts on saving
the civilians, allowing them to escape with the Seismic Cannon.
After the Magnum Shells left, Silverclaw
revealed she had been coerced into assisting the Magnum Shells.
(Avengers III#9 (fb) - BTS) - Triathlon managed to stow away on the plane piloted by the Magnum Shells.
(Avengers III#9 (fb)) - Triathlon led the Avengers and Silverclaw to the Evangeline.
(Avengers III#9) - As the Avengers and Silverclaw infiltrated the Evangeline, Magnum had his agents channel energy via the Seismic Cannon into himself. Magnum hoped to use the cannon as a weapon in a display of sheer destructive force that would impress Apocalypse, who would hopefully restabilize Magnum's powers. The Avengers attempted to stop him, but Magnum overpowered the lot of them. The Scarlet Witch managed to use her chaos magic to drain Magnum's power, until he flattened her with a piece of machinery. However, as she collapsed, Wonder Man arrived (at the time requiring her to channel his energies back to Earth), and the hero tackled Magnum off the Evangeline, landing above the shore of Martinique. Magnum's powers then began setting off a series of tremors, ultimately opening the ground below him, which then closed over after he fell into a deep hole.
(Civil War: Battle Damage Report#1) - Moses Magnum was present at the Pan-African Congress on the Treatment of Superhumans.
(Amazing Spider-Man I#577 (fb)) - Magnum shot a promo video for a gamma-enhanced Mutant Growth Hormone in South America. After injecting an innocent with a sample he watched as the man slaughtered a whole village.
(Amazing Spider-Man I#577 (fb) - BTS) - The Punisher posed as a weapons buyer and wiped out one of Magnum's sales teams and took control over Magnum's North American distribution center in Far Rockaway, Queens.
(Amazing Spider-Man I#577) - The Punisher stole a sample of the enhanced MGH from smugglers, led by Fernando (they all died), and Magnum's man Carlo, who later opened the booby trapped briefcase with the sample for the Punisher and died while doing so. Magnum and his men found the Punisher at Magnum's warehouse (Frank had just tied up Spider-Man because he didn't want his help, but he also swallowed a Spider-Tracer....read on). While being tortured the Punisher cut out the sample, secretly hidden on his body (he cut himself open and stashed it inside him...painful) and then destroyed the sample while Magnum tortured him on a ship. Spider-Man found them due to the Spider-Tracer inside Frank and the heroes defeated Magnum, whose earthquake-generating powers only caused some waves on the open sea. The Punisher shot Magnum in the stomach and fled on a speedboat (Spider-Man used it to get there) while Spider-Man (the little boy scout) rushed (as fast as he could...he is not a good ship pilot ;) ) Magnum to a hospital to save his life.
(Dark Wolverine#78) - In a plot to give Wolverine (Daken) some good publicity Norman Osborn hired Emmy Doolin, Inquisitor and Cutthroat to break out Moses Magnum at a trial concerning a prison riot, which was instigated by the racist Aryan, who was also hired. Daken was supposed to hunt down the four villains in heroic fashion.
The judge made the trial open for the press after being tortured by Inquisitor. Cutthroat, Doolin and Inquisitor freed Magnum, who used his seismic powers to destroy the courthouse, killing at least ten people. Magnum called Osborn immediately after his escape and was told that he had a job for him and his new team. With the police and H.A.M.M.E.R. after them Moses and his team soon realized that their job was a suicide mission. They were soon found by Daken in their warehouse hideout.
(Dark Wolverine#79) - Filmed by cameras Daken assaulted Moses and his team even though Cutthroat surrendered from the start. Moses used his seismic powers to nearly knock out Daken, who was then beaten to a pulp and stabbed multiple times by Inquisitor and Cutthroat. Moses and his team fled before Daken's healing factor kicked in. The team decided to call Osborn again to clear everything up. Moses wanted Emmy to do it. She got security tapes from her old workplace that proved Osborn was talking to her days before she aided in the breakout of Moses. She sent the footage to Osborn, who made a deal with Doolin. Osborn promised that Moses and his team would be cleared of all charges and released with new identities if they turned themselves in....but at the same time he sent Daken after them to kill Moses and his team in front of the media on live television.
(Dark Wolverine#80) - Daken and H.A.M.M.E.R. tracked down Moses and his team. Doolin suggested to surrender in front of the cameras, but Daken was already inside the house and told them that Osborn was lying to them. Osborn had the building blown up and the media was told Moses and his team were responsible. Daken survived, but so did Moses and his team, who Daken allowed to escape before the explosion. Moses Magnum escaped for good and wasn't tracked down by Daken again.
(Iron Man/Thor#1) - Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean DRC president Moses Magnum showed an orbital weapons platform to interested North Koreans (including a little fat man). After the showcase the platform was destroyed by Crimson Dynamo (presumably Bukharin) in a new alchemy-enhanced armor. Dynamo stole parts of the platform for the High Evolutionary and Diablo.
(Storm III#4 (fb) - BTS) - At some point Magnum became the leader of Kigali Clan of the Four Clans.
(Storm III#4) - DRC president Moses Magnum, representing the Kigali Clan, met with Davis Harmon, leader of the Aqiria Clan, and Kuva of Breakworld, representing the Oakland Clan in a secret underground bunker in Las Vegas. Yukio of the Kyoto Clan arrived late with Storm (Ororo Munroe). Magnum didn't think Storm was ready for their business, which she took in stride. At the meeting table Harmon and Magnum got into a dispute over concession rights on a new mobile A.I.M. base in the red sea. Harmon wanted it because it was ten miles into his territory, but Magnum knew it would end up in his territory soon and offered Harmon 30% rental fee. Harmon wanted to run it solo or at most give Magnum 5%. Magnum was not willing to go below 25% and Harmon formally challenged Magnum. The Four Clan leaders and Storm went to the arena to decide the situation by pitting a champion of the Aqiria and Kigali Clan against each other. As they watched Storm interrupted the fight. Kuva was angered by Storm breaking the rules and challenged Yukio for leadership of the clans.
(Storm III#5) - Harmon left the arena with Magnum and Kuva after Storm agreed to fight as Yukio's champion. In the Mojave Desert before the fight between Storm and Kuva's champion Gah-Ran, Harmon bet with Magnum that Gah-Ran would beat Storm in twelve minutes while Magnum thought it would take Gah-Ran at least 20 minutes. After Storm tried to shake Gah-Ran's hand Harmon changed his time to seven while Magnum changed his to fifteen. The fight commenced and Storm eventually won in twelve minutes. Magnum and Harmon both lost their bet because of her win, but because she didn't kill Gah-Ran the bet was void anyway. Harmon and Magnum were still arguing over who won due to the circumstance of Gah-Ran still being alive when Storm hit the ground beneath their feet with lightning. Storm was shocked when she found Kuva slain by Yukio, who was declared the new leader of the Oakland Clan by Gah-Ran. Storm flew off.
SECRET WARS III HAPPENED
(Shuri#4) - Moses Magnum attended a concert just outside Timbuktu, Mali with two female associates. During the concert he witnessed the arrival of an extraterrestrial Space-Lubber. The creature's arrival created a black hole nearby and while most concert goers fled, Magnum and his two women stayed to watch what was going to happen next. Magnum examined the creature's gravitational resonance and quickly realized that it was not from Earth and saw the potential in the alien that could create black holes to create weapons. He used a gravitational force meter he learned to test one more thing, but his women wanted to leave. He had none of that and pushed them into the growing black hole. He was now sure that he could extract great amount of energy with his seismic powers from the black hole that would make him powerful enough to break Earth in half.
(Shuri#5) - Iron Man and Shuri were attacked by Magnum while they tried to find a way to reverse the black hole's growth. He planned to become the ruler of the world with the power he had mined from the black hole, but Shuri assured him that there would not be much to rule if the black hole swallowed the whole planet. Iron Man distracted Magnum while Shuri used a plasma device from Iron Man's drone to create a particle accelerator that would weaken the black hole. Iron Man lured Magnum over the black hole and the villain was pulled into the black hole alongside the particle accelerator.
(Shuri#5 - BTS) - Moses Magnum survived inside the black hole due to his seismic powers. It was later reported in the Ethiopian Daily that he emerged in Timbuktu.
(Marvel's Voices: Legends#1/3) - Magnum had a run-in with Deathlok (Collins) during an attack on a city (presumably in the United States, but maybe not). Deathlok fled from Magnum.
(Marvel's Voices: Legends#1/3 - BTS) - Magnum was incapacitated when Deathlok's computer blew up a gas main by overheating a nearby smart stove.
Comments: Created by Gerry Conway, Ross Andru, and Mike Esposito.
I don't think the Council
from Power Man Annual#1 was ever definitely confirmed, but in one
of the Marvel Indexes, George Olshevsky commented that they were
likely the Council of the Chosen, another name for the Inner
Circle of the Hellfire Club. That would have been my guess, as
well, especially since Chris Claremont wrote Power Man Annual#1.
X-Men Index#5 and X-Men Index (second series)#2 confirm
the Hellfire Club as the Council from Power Man Annual#1 in their entries for
X-Men I#96 and Classic X-Men#4.
--Per Degaton
According to GS Spdm#4, Magnum was born 15 years before Mussolini invaded Ethiopia, which was around 1936. That would have made him 54 years old in the 1974 story. I would ASSume the date to be topical, but his age to be factual, though Magnum could age at a decreased rate for whatever reason (For more real world history, see this site: http://www.workmall.com/wfb2001/ethiopia/ethiopia_history_mussolinis_invasion_and_the_italian_occupation.html ).
On page 20 of Spider-Man Saga#2, his backstory is revised so that he joined forces with a rebel guerrilla outfit in the Eritrean Civil War.

Deathlok III#23-25 made it seem clear that Canaan was a separate nation than Wakanda, whereas in Avengers Collector's Edition#1, Baru was one of T'Challa's chieftains, and Canaan was apparently a village within Wakanda. Perhaps after Magnum's defeat, Canaan was absorbed into Wakanda.
For those who don't remember, the story from the Bible was that Noah got drunk, and his son Ham saw him naked. This angered Noah, so he put a curse on Ham's son Canaan. (Why he did not put the curse on Ham was not explained.) Canaan's children were to be slaves to the children of Noah's other sons, Shem and Japeth. Since Canaan's descendants were presumed to be the sub-Saharan Africans, this was used to justify slavery--Per Degaton.
Further explanations to the Biblical topic by Darc_Light:
It was asked why the curse was put upon Canaan instead of Ham for the incident with Noah, I'll try to explain it the best I can. Noah became drunk (Not a good thing, even then), and took of his clothes and passed out (Gen.9:20-22). The account then says that "Later Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and went telling it to his brothers. (Gen 9:22)" Later, when Noah woke up, it says that he "Got to know what his youngest son had done to him." (Gen 9:24). The term "To uncover (Someone's) nakedness" usually was a reference to a sexual act, usually it's mentioned in laws on fornication and incest (Leviticus chapter 18, for instance). Hence, it appears someone had molested Noah in his drunken state...The term "Youngest son" could refer to Canaan, the youngest son of Noah's youngest son, since the ancient Hebrews had no words for "Grandfather" or "Grandson". That Canaan was specifically named when Ham came into the incident; it seems even more likely that Canaan, not Ham, was responsible. Ham wasn't cursed, but when his brothers were blessed by their father while he cursed Canaan, Ham was overlooked (Gen, 9:25-27), possibly he'd been somehow neglectful or disrespectful to the situation, it says he rushed to tell his brothers, but his brothers respectfully backed into the tent and covered over there father, respecting his dignity. Gen. 9:23. Noah was a righteous man, though he faltered in this case by drinking to an excess, I don't think he would have cursed Canaan for what Ham had done, or he would have cursed all of Ham's sons. The prophecy was fulfilled when the Jews invaded Canaan, which God stated was due to their acts of idolatry, fornication, child-sacrifice, Etc, etc, which had finally just become too much to bear...It had nothing to do with skin color. The Canaanites were not "predestined" towards evil and beyond redemption either; Rahab (A Caananite) was an ancestress of Jesus Christ, for instance.
As for the racial issue, that was, and still is, pure bull. The Bible never mentions Canaan's complexion, and Archeologists believe that his descendants, the Caananites, were light-skinned people. The Darker- skinned offspring came from Cush, Ham's son, in fact, the name Cush is usually used to refer to Ethiopia. The probably also came from Ham's son Mizraim, who was called "The Father of Egypt", and whose name was used in the ancient world to refer to Egypt. The "Curse" excuse was just a way for so-called Christians to justify their brutal mistreatment of their slaves and denigrating non-whites as "Sub-Human", for a while the Church debated whether or not Blacks and Native Americans had souls...I think they decided they had "half of a soul" or some such nonsense, to justify converting them while conquering, killing and enslaving them.
Finally, yes, the Jews owned slaves, but the law commanded that they be treated with dignity, and cruelty and mistreatment were forbidden, if a man deliberately killed his slave, he was put to death. It was a different situation from the slavery of the past few centuries, and even of the contemporary nations around Israel.
