BASE of OPERATIONS: The SHIELD Orbiter, mobile throughout space

FIRST APPEARANCE: Avengers Spotlight#24 (November, 1989)

ABILITIES: SHIELD has access to highly advanced extraterrestrial technology, including sophisticated translators, interstellar ships, energy shields, and much, much more.

 

 

HISTORY: The origins of SHIELD are unrevealed.

(Avengers Spotlight#24 (fb)) - Base pupil Yoof worked independently on a project which proved untenable. He expunged the experimental by-product into space.

(Avengers Spotlight#24 (fb)) - The by-products of Yoof's experiment crashed on Earth, where they mutated Bonita Juarez into Firebird.

(Avengers Spotlight#24 (fb) - BTS) - SHIELD captured Firebird and examined her to confirm whether she had been harmed by the exposure to Yoof's energies.

(Avengers Spotlight#24) - SHIELD completed its studies, during which time Firebird broke free and demanded an explanation. Prime Technician Chlreee explained what had happened, after which SHIELD returned her to Earth.

COMMENTS: Created by Fabian Nicieza, Gavin Curtis, and Steve Buccellato.

    Firebird was initially quite distraught because she believed her powers to have been a gift from God, but she eventually decided that they still were, and that they had just taken a rather circuitous route.

    Hji's race looks so familiar, but I can't place it. I suspect it's even on the Appendix site, but still I'm coming up with nothing. Let me know what it is, and I'll credit you!
The only other alien seen clearly is the odd biped next to Yoof in the group picture. There's another, taller alien seen in partial profile next to Yoof when he is being reprimanded by Chlreee, but I don't recognize that, either. Any help is welcome.

He (?) presumably had telepathic powers and an extended lifespan.

    Only partially seen in one panel, there's not much more to say about this character. Pale yellow skin. Can't tell for sure whether it's got 1, 2, 3, or 4 eyes...or what else it's supposed to have on its face, but otherwise appears to be a biped.

    This little guy has pale yellow (?) skin, two legs (each with two toes), and two stalk-like structures that may be arms, or eyes, or who knows what. It's pretty short, perhaps only 2 feet tall.
