History: (Amazing Spider-Man I#388/2(fb)) - Chuck Stone was a Navy Seal who fought in a war (see comments). He was a war hero, but when he returned to the United States, his records were lost and he was denied benefits. He was forced to live on the streets and turned to drugs. He eventually entered himself into a rehabilitation program. Eddie Brock won an award for a story he wrote about Chuck. However, Chuck didn't have an easy time going clean, and was left living in a small room in the bowery, with no money, no coat, and hard pressed just to get food.
(Amazing Spider-Man I#388/2) - Eddie Brock had recently acquired his symbiote to become Venom and went looking for someone to help him out in figuring out how he should go about killing Spider-Man. He remembered Chuck Stone and figured that since Chuck himself was ruined by forces beyond his control, Chuck would relate to Brock's predicament and help. Brock found Chuck, who was trying his absolute hardest to resist his urge for drugs. Chuck agreed to help Brock and educated him in the art of war over the next few hours. He taught Brock about stealth, surprise, and warrior mentality. He told Brock that to win his battle, he would need to become a machine, a creature, whose only reason was to gain vengeance. Brock was inspired by Chuck and became Venom. He gave Chuck some money and told him to buy himself something he needed. However, Chuck instead bought himself some drugs and died of overdose.

It was never confirmed which war Chuck was in,
but at the time of this story it was likely the Vietnam War. This is most likely
topical.
