History: (Fantastic Four I#389) While working as an intern for the hospital where Lyja gave birth, Raphael Suarez overheard the doctors who delivered Lyja's egg talking about an implant they pulled from her. Telling them that he was an electrical engineering student at ESU, Suarez was able to study the implant. Raphael noticed what looked to be a button on it, and since nobody can resist a button, he pressed it, accidentally giving himself the powers of the Laserfist.
Later, Raphael visited Four Freedoms Plaza, hoping the Fantastic Four would be able to consult him about his newfound powers, but he chose a rather poor time to visit, as the Collector was there, attempting to steal Lyja's egg. Stumbling upon the Human Torch and Lyja battling the Collector's Drakion Destructoid, Raphael used his new laserfist powers to destroy the robot. He then joined with the Human Torch in trying to destroy the Collector's force field, but the Collector simply left, telling them that he wasn't interested in frauds. Lyja was finally forced to admit the truth about the egg to Johnny.
(Fantastic Four I#390) Feeling like a bit of a third wheel, Raphael listened on as Lyja explained the true origin of the egg that she claimed was her and Johnny's child. As Lyja's egg began to crack open, Johnny was teleported away, leaving only Raphael and Lyja to deal with what came out.
(Fantastic Four I#391) Overtaken by the tentacled Sha'Barri monster that came out of the egg, Raphael and Lyja were lucky to be found by Namor and Scott Lang, who attempted to help. Lyja was eventually forced to transform into a duplicate of the Sha'Barri, and kill the monster she had carried with her.
(Fantastic Four I#392) Lost in the background, Raphael watched on as the Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing of the Fantastic Four were teleported back to Four Freedom's Plaza, and saw the Human Torch's violent reaction to Lyja's deception. Raphael then left with Namor and Scott Lang, giving the remaining Fantastic Four members the space they'd need.
