of Mars-52320

Real Name: Aada

Identity/Class: Alternate Reality (Reality-52320) extraterrestrial (Martian);
    some unidentified time period in the future

Occupation: Prince, Soldier

Group Membership: Martian race

Affiliations: None beyond other unidentified Martians

Enemies: Humanity; notably Melvin

Known Relatives: None

Aliases: The Martian;
    Aava (misspelled in one panel)

Base of Operations: Unrevealed;
    died on Mars;
    formerly a prison in an unidentified location on Earth

First Appearance: Astonishing#10 (March, 1952)aada-52320-martian-pg4pan5-escapeaada-52320-martian-pg4pan6-shiptheft

Powers/Abilities: Apparently like other Martians of his reality, Aada existed without physical substance or visible features, and he existed without the need for food or sleep.

    At will he could pass through solid objects as well as prevent people, bullets or other weapons from touching him. He could similarly cause his uniform to become immaterial and similarly untouchable while still containing his form.

    To interact with humanity, at least, he wore a mask (and apparently a uniform) to cover his physical features, although humanity could not see them, regardless.

    Extremely intelligent and knowledgeable about science and space travel, he may also have been able to mentally scan objects to discern their purpose, such as how to operate a foreign spacecraft.

Height: Unrevealed; (approximately 6'2" in spacesuit )
Weight: Unrevealed (approximately and impossible to estimate given we don't know of what he or his uniform were composed (his mask was bronze, but that's all we know))
Eyes: Unrevealed (if any)
Hair: Unrevealed (if any)

History:
(
Astonishing#10 (fb) - BTS) - Aada was a proud prince of the Martian race, who exist without physical substance, wearing a mask (and apparently a uniform) to cover their physical features. The Martians were much more scientifically advanced than humanity, possessing the knowledge of countless ages.

    Humanity had fruitlessly warred with the Martians for ten years, with millions of human casualties among their soldiers and among human cities gassed by the Martians, while humanity had not yet built a ship that could reach Mars.

(Astonishing#10 (fb) - BTS) - Via an unspecified blunder, Aada was captured by human forces and placed in the custody of the plain, slight human agent Melvin.

(Astonishing#10) - Melvin was pleased to meet a Martian, but Aada assured him that he would be the last one that he ever saw, noting that he had been captured following a blunder but that humanity's soldiers would live to regret it.

(Astonishing#10) - As the capture of Aada was the first triumph for humanity in long years of warfare against Mars, Aada was put on display in a large transparent cage where the public could come see him.

(Astonishing#10 (fb) - BTS) - Nonetheless, Earth's rulers realized that this one victory was dwarfed by the Martian threat and that the Martians would swiftly realize they need not only gas human cities but that they could land on Earth; and that within a couple years the Martians would destroy Earth.

(Astonishing#10) - When Melvin brought Aada food pellets, Aada mocked the need for food and rest as weaknesses within humanity, and he stated that was why they were losing the battle of the planets. He further taunted Melvin that he had only stayed there to learn humanity's weaknesses and that now he would leave their prison whenever he felt like it. Melvin asked if they could not be friends, but Aada reminded them that they were at war, although the war would end as soon as he escaped to Mars and revealed humanity's weaknesses.

(Astonishing#10 (fb) - BTS) - Angered by Aada's mocking, Melvin conceived the idea of disguising a giant planet-busting H-bomb to resemble a space ship and then manipulating Aada into stealing it and flying it back to Mars where it would detonate and destroy the planet.

(Astonishing#10) - As the Martians continued to dominate the war, Aada watched from his Plexiglas cell, further studying humanity's ways. Observing a "ridiculous" object being constructed out in the field, Aada asked what it was, and Melvin informed him that humanity had finally designed a ship that could reach and destroy Mars.

    Confirming that the ship could reach Mars, Aada then made himself immaterial, escaping his cell and passing with impunity to the ship, which he then stole and flew to Mars.

    En route, Aada thanked Melvin for making it possible for his people to destroy Earth and mankind, and he planned to soon return with a fleet of Martian destroyers.

    However, Melvin got the last laugh, as when Aada landed the stolen space ship on Mars, it exploded, revealing Melvin's plan of disguising a giant planet-busting H-bomb to resemble a space ship.

    Mars was apparently destroyed.

Comments: Created by Joe Sinnott and unidentified writer.

    There was not evidence to support whether these Martians were native to Mars or had simply colonized it. However, they called themselves Martians and their world was shown to be the relatively nearby Mars in Earth's solar system, which does at least meant that they were not just called Martians as a blanket/generic term for extraterrestrials.

    It was unrevealed how far in the future this story took place, but the technology was far in advance of what exists in Reality-616 over 70 years after this story was published.

    I don't know the exact consequences for Earth and the rest of the solar system if Mars were destroyed, but I would think there would indeed be serious consequences.

Keeping in mind that I am not a scientist and that all my knowledge about planets comes from science fiction stories that I have read or watched, encylopedia or Wikipedia articles, and YouTube videos, here are my three comments on "Melvin and the Martian."

First, according to what some Star Wars fans have calculated, it requires an incredible amount of energy to actually blow up a planet. I don't know the exact figures but, if memory serves, the energy that the Death Star would have had to impart to Alderaan would have been equivalent to one week's worth of the energy radiated by Earth's Sun. I don't see any way in which a "planet-busting H-bomb" could possibly supply enough energy to overcome the gravitational-binding energy (I think that's the correct term) that holds a planet together. While a planet's habitable environment is a thin film that could easily be destroyed, planets themselves are incredibly durable and, in the real world, can only be destroyed by collisions with large solid objects, being incinerated if their parent star expands to engulf them or being blasted apart if their parent star explodes in a nova or super-nova.

Second, everything with mass in the Solar System affects everything else with their gravitational pulls. While the pulls from the Sun and the Moon affect Earth the most, Mars does exert a relatively tiny pull on Earth as well. If Mars were suddenly destroyed and its mass were dispersed, that pull would be eliminated and might negatively affect Earth's orbit. For a fictional example, consider "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," in which the destruction of planet Ceta Alpha VI shifted the orbit of planet Ceta Alpha V and made it far less habitable.

Third, if Mars were to be destroyed, it would leave behind a debris field. Depending on how much energy was released, much of those objects might remain gravitationally-bound together and eventually coalesce back into a planetary mass. However, at least some of its mass would be hurled away to become asteroids, and some of those asteroids could end up on collision courses with Earth.

Not being a scientist, I have no idea how likely these scenarios are. However, I did find a YouTube video about this very subject. Here's a link to it.

    Given his ability to become immaterial, it is possible that Aada +/- some or all of the Martians could have survived the destruction of Mars. Maybe they didn't need air, heat, pressure, food or water...and maybe they were immune to radiation...but how would they move?
    Regardless, it seems extremely likely that some of the Martian fleet were off Mars at the time, and they would have survived. Perhaps they could have picked up any survivors, and then they could have directly invaded Earth, using their powers to avoid harm while destroying whatever they wished...

Note: Beyond being the fourth planet from the sun, we don't know much about the planet. Aada didn't need food or sleep...maybe not even air or temperature, so perhaps Mars' climate was consistent with that in the real world.

Note: No other Martians were seen, so it didn't seem appropriate to give the whole race a profile, as we don't know that the rest of his race indeed shared Aada's appearance and/or abilities.
