History:
(Navy Combat#6/4 (fb) - BTS) - Lt. "Cowboy" Carson
was an experienced naval fighter pilot based on the USS Valley Forge
aircraft carrier often providing ground support for US troops during
the Korean War. On one mission, he was part of a squadron of eight
planes that destroyed a North Korean airfield, hangar and planes. All
bullets and bombs were spent on the enemy.
(Navy Combat#6/4) - The squadron left a blazing mess
of the enemy base and rocketed back to their ship, but scant minutes
later, Carson saw North Korean army forces hidden in tall wheat and
rice field lying in wait for an ambush against US Marine troops (Fox
Company). The US naval planes had no means of stopping or exposing the
North Koreans using ammunition, and flying fancy circles just confused
the Marines. Carson figured the wind direction and alerted his fellow
pilots to follow him. Carson flew a few feet above the ground,
triggering his after-burner to set fire to the dry tall wheat and rice
field. The other pilots followed and the panicked Communist were
flushed south to be captured by the Marines. Carson and his fellow
pilots then flew back to their aircraft carrier.
Comments: .
Carson is only shown seated in the plane with just his eyes showing, so physical stats are almost impossible to determine.
