Powers/Abilities: Colossus is a mutant with the
ability to convert the tissues of his body into organic steel. This
steel form gave him superhuman strength and protection from physical
damage. Peter's organic steel is vulnerable to certain types of acid. A
sufficiently strong explosion can also cause him (fatal) injuries. Due
to the severe injuries Colossus endured on the battlefield, he was no
longer able to convert to his human form without risk of death. Years of
war, personal injuries and the loss of almost everyone he loved left
Colossus in a mentally fragile state.
Height: 6'5" (permanently in metal form)
Weight: 700 lbs. (permanently in metal form)
Eyes: Black
Hair: Black
History:
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse
2005 I#1) - Born on Siberia's Ust-Ordynsky Collective, Piotr Rasputin
was the younger brother of Russia's greatest hero Mikhail Rasputin and
served by his side as a Soviet Super Soldier. When Apocalypse's forces
came to Moscow, Mikhail fought them off but was captured and forced to
become a Horseman.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe:
X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Colossus became leader
of the Super Soldiers and faced his brainwashed brother in combat.
Mikhail destroyed all of Russia's super heroes except his brother. The
severely beaten Colossus chose to dedicate his life to stopping
Apocalypse and Mikhail and joined Magneto's cause.
(Generation Next I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Peter believed himself the only
member of his family still alive after Apocalypse's campaigns through
Eastern Europe and Asia. As a result, he had no idea his young sister
Illyana was taken to the United States as a prisoner.
(Official
Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse
2005 I#1) - Magneto moved his students to Transia where he
set up a base on Mount Wundagore. There, aided by the
evolved cow-woman Bova, he provided a
place for young mutants to learn how to master their powers and
fight for genetic equality. The best among them received special
training as a team known as the X-Men.
(X-Men
Chronicles I#1 (fb) - BTS) - To ensure his young wards had the
best possible chance of survival, Magneto proved to be a stern,
often brutal taskmaster. He subjected his most promising
recruits to daily, rigorous training exercises in a combat
simulator his students dubbed "The Killing Zone".
(X-Men Chronicles
I#1) - Magneto surprised Colossus and the others by
shifting the Killing Zone to level four after he caught
them celebrating the fact they had just beaten its third
level. He then shocked them even more by introducing
Weapon X as their newest, most dangerous member. Logan
immediately proved this by succumbing to a berserker
rage that the inexperienced telepath Jean Grey tempered
with Magneto's guidance. Only a few short hours later
they went on their first mission to the United States
when Apocalypse and his heralds attacked Cape Citadel to
claim the United States' nuclear stockpile.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1) - Magneto led the X-Men in
opposing Candra's forces who attacked to buy Gideon
time to gain control of the nuclear missiles. While
Magneto went inside to stop Gideon, Colossus and the
others focused on Candra and her troops. Colossus and
Iceman teamed up to stop War. After Candra and his
underlings were defeated, Apocalypse showed himself
briefly to gloat while ordering his Ship to fire on
the young mutants and Sabretooth, who had betrayed
him.
(X-Men Chronicles I#1) - Magneto protected his team
from Ship's weapons with a wide magnetic pulse. After
Apocalypse left, he congratulated the X-Men on their
first successful mission. But by the time they
returned home to Wundagore, Colossus and the others
had to mourn the loss of one of her own: in their
absence, Apocalypse's son Nemesis had attacked
Wundagore, resulting in the death of Wanda Maximoff.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2
(fb) ) - Colossus attended the service for Wanda Maximoff who was laid
to rest on Mount Wundagore.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men -
Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - During
his first solo mission as an X-Man, Colossus battled Sabretooth for the
life of a young mutant named Katherine Pryde.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2) - Colossus
was present when Weapon X and Jean Grey left the team over a falling
out with Magneto who had decided to abandon Jean during a recent
mission. Magneto forced the remaining X-Men to keep up the pace,
taking Peter and the others to Denver to fight off a horde of bandits.
Seeing humans turns on their own kind left him wondering why they'd work
for Apocalypse's forces who hated all humans. His teammate Sabretooth
explained that some people would do anything to get a leg up in this
world. Colossus and the X-Men later faced Apocalypse's agent Wolverine,
who was so powerful not even Peter's immense strength could bring him
down. In the end, Gambit's powers won the day he wound up blasting the
villain away.
(Official
Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse
2005 I#1)
- Without her mentor Weapon X around, Kitty grew closer to Colossus.
They fell in love and would eventually marry (see comments).
(Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2) - Colossus joined the X-Men in
their underground Kentucky base for an intelligence briefing on
Apocalypse. Nightcrawler had learned Apocalypse was recovering from
recent injuries aboard his Celestial Ship. Colossus could not believe
such a giant vessel could be hidden on Earth, which led to the reveal it
was, in fact, on the Moon (see comments).
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse
One-Shot I#1) - Colossus grew tired and demoralized after years of
constant combat and death. During a mission to Wakanda to destroy a
proto-Sentinel facility he lost the will to fight all together. While
his teammates fought for their lives, he simply sat back and wondered to
himself. He returned home to the X-Men's base a broken man. Peter was
comforted by his wife who told him they had every right to live their
own lives, to get away from this madness and to start their own family.
Kitty also decided she had enough. As if on cue, Magneto entered the
couple's quarters to propose that they used their collective experience
to teach the next generation of mutants, showing them images of future
Generation Next members including Husk, Mondo, Skin and Vincente.
(Generation Next I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Shadowcat and Colossus took their
band of young mutants to Colorado where they established a base inside
The Tomb, an old, abandoned castle in the Rocky Mountains. Their recruit
Know-it-all was granted her own computer lab in the catacombs from which
she helped her teachers run the base. She used her control over
machinery to set up weapons gauntlets in the woodlands near the Tomb
that Kitty and Peter used for combat exercises.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Magneto asked Colossus
to return to active duty to carry out an unrevealed mission that left
him so injured, only Magnus' control over metal kept him alive. As a
result, he could no longer revert to his human form.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2) - Shadowcat and
Colossus, along with their recent recruit Skin, helped save young
British psionic Jonothon Starsmore from Mikhail Rasputin and his
forces. Jonothon joined the team as Chamber.
(Generation X I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Battle-hardened after years of strife,
Colossus and Shadowcat were ruthless towards their students. To make
sure they were ready for the war against Apocalypse, the duo had them
constantly on edge, often having them engage in kill or be killed
scenarios.
(Age of
Apocalypse: The Chosen I#1) - Apocalypse took special interest
in Colossus when he compiled his Chosen files. En Sabah Nur
deemed Rasputin worthy of survival, even noting that his
apparent lack of empathy towards those put in his care could
potentially make him a very valuable asset.
(X-Men Alpha I#1 (fb) - BTS) - When Magneto learned from the
mysterious Bishop that their reality was a mistake, he intended to set
things right. He reached out to various X-Men allies, including Peter
and Kitty. He ordered them to prepare the students for a mission he
was coming to Colorado to inform them about.
(Generation Next I#1) - While
waiting for Magneto to arrive, Colossus and Shadowcat put their young
wards through their paces in the woodlands. After the team had survived
for three minutes, Colossus joined the fray with Kitty hiding inside
him. Peter demanded to know why Chamber as team leader had still left
people alive. Chamber tried to blast his teacher with his powers, but
Colossus prevented him from firing. He went on call his pupils weak,
sentimental dreamers. This left him open to Husk who jumped on his back
and turned into acid. As her husband burned, Shadowcat emerged from his
backside to claw at Husk. This went on until Husk
learned her lesson and turned into a gaseous bio-pattern that Kitty's
phasing was useless against. As soon as his wife appeared to be in
danger, Colossus flew into a frenzied rage. He was distracted by the
vaporous Vincente before the situation could turn dire. Moments later,
Magneto arrived to end the training.
(Generation Next I#1 - BTS) - Before showing up to stop the combat
drill, Magneto and his associate Bishop visited with Know-It-All who was
asked to scan Apocalypse's databanks for
information on chrono-variant mutants. She gathered a list of mostly
deceased subjects like prelate Gallo and T. Edenfox, as well as
Flashback who was missing in action.
(Generation Next I#1) - Kitty and Peter went inside with Magneto to have
a meeting with Bishop and Know-It-All who presented her findings. Both
Peter and Kitty expressed concern for their student's safety. If the
Shadow King were to catch her psi-surfing Apocalypse's files, she risked
instant lobotomization. Undeterred, Know-It-All continued her
presentation which ended when Colossus was stunned to find his young
sister was on the list. He had thought she'd died, but Know-It-All
confirmed Illyana was being held at The Core, Apocalypse's main power
plant in Seattle. Figuring Illyana's latent temporal abilities were
their best bet, Magneto ordered the team to rescue the girl.
(Generation Next I#2 (fb) - BTS) - The news that his sister was alive
made the taciturn, morose Colossus reckless and unpredictable. Kitty
noticed the change in him, but felt she could do little to change his
mind. Along with the students, they came up with a plan to get Illyana
out. The team was to infiltrate the facility while their teachers would
go around the back to serve as ace in the hole.
(Generation Next I#2 - BTS) - Know-It-All remained behind in the Tomb
to monitor the rescue mission.
(Generation Next I#2) - Arriving at the Core incognito, Shadowcat was
astounded by its imposing size. When she expressed her incredulity at
being expected to break into there, Colossus coldly dismissed her
concerns: "If you do not feel up to this, Katya, I am more than willing
to do it alone." All she could do was whisper to herself: "That's what
I'm afraid for."
(Generation Next I#2) - When Colossus walked off, Kitty was left
muttering to herself and about to light a cigarette when she was
attacked by the Undercloaks, Sugar Man's assassins who preferred to
strike from the shadows. Colossus rushed to his wife's aid, but she
didn't need much rescuing: popping her claws, she stabbed her assailants
to death, hoping they caught them before they could warn their
superiors.
(Generation Next I#3) -
Know-It-All concluded that her teammates were having problems inside The
Core. She risked her safety by contacting her teachers, projecting an
image of herself on the outside wall of The Core where Colossus and
Shadowcat were waiting for a signal to move in. Know-It-All told them
Skin, Chamber, Husk and Vincente were cornered and needed help while
Mondo was about to reach Illyana's location deep within the plant.
Taking Claudia's recommendations to heart, Peter and Kitty phased
through the wall of the Core to help their young wards.
(Generation Next I#4 - BTS) - Peter and Kitty caused a massive
disturbance when they crashed through the ceiling of the Core,
immediately causing the distraction needed to get Illyana and the others
to safety. Kitty remained hidden inside her husband who started barking
orders at his students, telling them to get his sister. However, Mondo
was killed by the Sugar Man while carrying Illyana inside his own body.
Colossus jumped on the villain, seemingly splattering him and freeing
the girl in the process. Reconnecting with most of their students, they
set out to escape the Core but got drawn into the massive riots that had
broken out following Colossus' arrival. Shadowcat offered to go after
Skin and Chamber, but Colossus coldly reminded her of their mission: to
bring Illyana to Magneto.
Generation Next I#4) - He ordered
his wife to take him and Illyana out of there. Once safely outside the
Core, Kitty wanted to go back but Peter offered to go instead, not
wanting to risk losing both his wife and his sister. While
Kitty waited with Illyana, Colossus tried to get back inside the Core.
He pried open the massive doors and was about to go in, but when he saw
that all his students except for Husk appeared beyond rescue, he decided
to head back.
(Generation Next I#4) - When he returned alone, Kitty asked about the
others. Peter lied and told her he did everything he could. "Sorry" was
all he managed to say, a sentiment mirrored by Kitty. They quietly sat
by the fire before heading to Westchester with Illyana (see
comments).
(Amazing X-Men I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Peter and Kitty arrived with Illyana at
the Xavier Estate. Finding the place empty, they came across a message
from Quicksilver telling them Magneto and Bishop had been taken by
Apocalypse's forces while young Charles and his robotic Nanny were
missing as well. The note further stated that Quicksilver and his team
had gone off to rescue Bishop from the Madri in Quebec, while Dazzler
and Exodus went to search the tunnels for signs of Charles.
(Amazing X-Men I#4) -
Colossus and Shadowcat welcomed Rogue and her team of X-Men back from
their mission to halt Holocaust's cullings. They informed the new
arrivals of the situation, leaving Rogue shocked that they had lost all
their students. Colossus kept quiet and only focused on Illyana's
well-being. Not too long after that, Peter and Kitty witnessed Rogue
trying to kill Gambit when she learned he was responsible for letting
Charles fall into Apocalypse's hands. They were also on hand when
Quicksilver and Storm returned from Quebec with Bishop while
Nightcrawler teleported in with the mutant seer Destiny. Fascinated by
the fact that all of Magneto's disparate plans had more or less worked
out, Kitty and Peter joined the others in their preparations for a final
assault on Apocalypse's citadel.
(X-Men Omega I#1) - Blink teleported Colossus, Shadowcat and the others
to the Pens underneath Apocalypse's stronghold. They were ready for
battle, but much to their surprise found the place was empty and
abandoned, with only the injured Dark Beast present. When Rogue called
this lucky, Colossus grew unreasonably angry: he was not about risk his
sister's life on luck and demanded an explanation, much to his wife's
concern.
(X-Men Omega I#1 - BTS) - Dark Beast told the X-Men about Apocalypse and
his plans for the M'Kraan crystal. He was forced to tell them where the
crystal was kept and got dragged along with the group. At the same time
Nate Grey had freed Magneto from Apocalypse and Holocaust.
(X-Men Omega I#1) - Colossus slammed his way through the walls to enter
the crystal chamber. When faced with the ever growing crystal, the seer
Destiny sensed Bishop's claims about the alternate timeline were true.
She told the X-Men that only she and Illyana could accompany Bishop.
Colossus protested, but got distracted by X-Man and Holocaust who
dropped through the ceiling and crashed through the floor to continue
their fight. Magneto approached Illyana, asking her to help him create a
better world. Colossus tried to keep his sister from agreeing, saying
Magneto couldn't promise her that this new world would be better because
he didn't know. This led Bishop to step in and assure her there would be
at least hope there.
(X-Men Omega I#1 - BTS) - Illyana accompanied Bishop and Destiny into
the expanding crystal. Colossus swore Magneto they would be enemies
forever if something happened to her there.
(X-Men Omega I#1) Shadowcat and Colossus then joined the other X-Men in
protecting the crystal and fighting off the hordes of Apocalypse. But
after a while the frantic, erratic Colossus broke ranks and went
barrelling towards the crystal, screaming that he was coming to join his
sister, in death if need be.
(X-Men Omega I#1) - Shadowcat tried to block
his path, so confident that he would stop for her that she didn't bother
phasing. Colossus was too clouded by insanity to notice his wife, only
realizing what hat happened after he had trampled her to death. Now
completely mad with grief, he was killed by Gambit before he could cause
any more damage. As he lay dying, he reverted to his human form for the
first time in years. Illyana returned from inside the M'Kraan in time to
watch him perish. Before she could honor his request and hold his hand
when he passed, Quicksilver rushed her away to keep the child safe from
lurking attackers.
(X-Men: Age of Apocalypse I#6 (fb) - BTS) - Colossus was eventually laid
to rest in a graveyard near the Xavier Institute in Washington D.C. His
burial plot was right next to his wife's.
(X-Men Unlimited I#37 (fb) - BTS) - Colossus was among
countless alternate reality counterparts summoned to Earth-616 as part
of a plot by Mephisto and the mutaphobic Mr. Thatchel. They sought to
use the interdimensional being Hutch to bring about the destruction of
Earth by flooding it with mutants from all realities.
(X-Men Unlimited I#37) - Ultimately, Hutch rejected Mephisto's plan and returned to the interdimensional space from which he had come; Colossus and all the other alternate reality mutants were presumably returned to their own realities.
(Age of Apocalypse I#6 (fb) - BTS) - Using the power of
the Celestial Seed, Clan Akkaba's leader Weapon Omega (the former
Weapon X, now possessed by the power of Apocalypse) had Dark
Beast bring Colossus back to life. However, to ensure his obedience,
Weapon X ordered Beast to alter Peter's memories so he would be easier
to handle. As a result, Rasputin was made to forget ever having a wife,
let alone how she died.
(Age of Apocalypse I#6) -
Colossus along with Scott Summers were sent to accompany Azazel on his
good will mission to the mysteriously resurrected Monet St. Croix who
had been using her powers to sway giant crowds to her side. Monet had
little interest in Azazel's offer to join forces with Clan Akkaba.
Instead, she sensed Colossus' memories were tampered with and corrected
the matter with a single touch. As a result, Colossus was instantly
wracked with guilt over murdering his own wife. Monet used her abilities
to remind him he was a good, pertinent man, which allowed her to easily
recruit Peter to her cause. Colossus immediately stood up for her when
Summers attacked Monet because she wanted to "cure" him as well. Azazel
teleported himself and Scott away, leaving Colossus with his new master.
(Age of Apocalypse I#10) - Colossus stood guard when Monet and Sugar Man
had a meeting with Prophet to hand him the means to kill Weapon Omega:
the "death jelly bean", a small catalyst that should separate Logan from
the source of power that made him turn evil.
(Age of Apocalypse I#12) - In the wake of Weapon Omega losing his
powers, Monet St. Croix rose to prominence as the new dominant power
popular with both mutant and humans. Colossus was by her side at all
times: when she gave her speeches, when she handed out care packages to
the needy and to defend her when she was attacked by Alex Summers, Scott
Summers and the remaining members of Clan Akkaba who wanted to hold on
to power. Colossus ensured Monet was unharmed. Though she hardly needed
the protection, she appreciated his loyalty.
(Age of Apocalypse I#13 (fb) ) - Nine months after the fall of Weapon
Omega, Monet was firmly in place as the new mutant monarch with Colossus
continuing on as her trusted aide.
(Age of Apocalypse I#14) -
Colossus was among the first to perish when the monstrous Exterminators
arrived on Earth-295.
Comments: Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne;
adapted by Scott Lobdell, Chris Bachalo, and Mark Buckingham.
Considering Earth-295's divergence point
from Earth-616 is the death of Charles Xavier, this technically means
that Earth-295's Colossus largely had the same upbringing as his
Earth-616 counterpart. However, since this has not (yet) been
confirmed on panel, it's not included in the profile.
There's a bit of a discrepancy between the 2005 Handbook and the
actual comics. According to his handbook profile Colossus married
Shadowcat. However, in Generation Next they specifically
state there were no clergymen left alive to perform a wedding
ceremony, but they consider themselves husband and wife anyway.
Colossus' presence in Tales from the Age of Apocalypse I#2 is
odd, to say the least. He shows up to attend the initial intelligence
briefing and then just sorta disappears. You'd think his strength
would have been a great asset to the mission.
It's also a bit unclear how Colossus and Shadowcat traveled with
Illyana from Seattle to the Xavier Estate in Westchester. Generation
Next didn't appear to have any aircraft of their own and flying over
Apocalypse controlled terrain isn't recommended anyway. They
definitely didn't walk and Illyana wasn't old enough yet to have
manifested her teleportation powers either. Perhaps Earth-295's
Shadowcat also mastered the fast travel technique some of her
counterparts employ: using the Earth's rotation.
All locations mentioned are Earth-295, unless otherwise specified.
