History:
(Strange Academy I#5) - Howie was one of the many students that gathered together to discuss their missing classmate Calvin Morse.

(Strange Academy I#6 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, Howard Scott joined the Strange Academy's theatre group.

(Strange Academy I#6 - BTS) - As part of the Strange Academy theatre group, Howard Scott played the role of Ferdinand in the Strange Academy production of The Tempest.

(Strange Academy I#10) - Howie accompanied other students in preparation for a field trip to Asgard. Once there, Howie and the students were introduced to the father of their classmates Iric and Alvi, Bror, as well as their tour guide, Volstagg. Volstagg then led the students immediately to the Ram's Den tavern, where he had arranged a large feast for them and Howie was present and watching when Volstagg received word of a disturbance outside. Howie and the other students eventually got drawn into a bar brawl when a patron bumped Howie's classmate Toth on his way. During the scuffle, Howie fought with a waitress who was wielding a staked corn on the cob as a weapon.

(Strange Academy I#11 (fb) - BTS) - Howie was a big fan of the online video game Battle Call, acquiring several digital "Battle Bucks" that he could use to purchase in-game items. While playing, Howie used the online game handle of Hairystyles_56.

(Strange Academy I#11) - After Strange Academy student Toth was attacked and nearly killed, private detective Howard the Duck was called in to investigate and he questioned each of the students to determine their whereabouts when Toth was attacked. When Howard questioned Howie, Howie informed Howard that he had been playing the Battle Call video game online that night, "laying out fools" using an in-game weapon called the BMFG that he purchased using the game's digital "Battle Bucks." As Howard later questioned fellow student Heidi, she informed Howard that she had been busy getting her butt handed to her online by someone named Hairystyles_56 during the attack on Toth.

(Strange Academy: The Death of Doctor Strange#1 / 7) - During a period in which the Strange Academy was temporarily shut down due to the death of Doctor Strange, Howie spent a lot of his time playing video games online with fellow student Heidi. While playing one day, Howie was attacking Heidi in-game and informed her that if she dropped her weapons, he would let her character go free. Heidi responded by offering to go out with Howie if his character dropped his weapons instead. Howie claimed he had not asked Heidi out but she remarked that she knew he wanted to and reiterated her offer to go on a date with him if he had his character drop his weapons. Howie did just that, remarking that he was going to trust Heidi, who then shot his character, killing him. Howie immediately protested, reminding Heidi of what she had said, to which Heidi replied by asking Howie what time he would be picking her up.

(Strange Academy I#15 - BTS) - When Strange Academy student Iric made up a bracket titled Iric's Magic Battle Class Madness, in which he partnered up various students and kept up with the outcomes of the magic battle class duels, Howie was placed against Doyle Dormammu.

(Strange Academy I#16) - As the Strange Academy students worked to set things up for the upcoming Winter Formal dance, Howie noticed German Aguilar using his magic and warned that school head Doctor Voodoo had sent out a letter asking for the rationing of magic due to Doctor Strange's death. When German asked why they would only be allowed to use magic in class, Howie responded that he had no idea but figured it was something not good. Heidi then chimed in, belittling Howie and claiming she now understood everything about the mystic arts from Howie's response alone. An annoyed Howie warned that if Heidi kept it up, she would find herself without a date for the Winter Formal, but Heidi expressed thoughts that Howie would be at her door to pick her up no matter what. Howie then told Heidi she was the worst and she replied by agreeing and reminding Howie that he loved it, at which point Howie agreed. He then helped Heidi carry a large object across the stage as other students worked to set up the dance. That night, Howie accompanied Heidi to the Winter Formal dance and danced with her as the other students and staff enjoyed themselves.

(Midnight Suns I#1) - As Zoe Laveau (with Dessy in tow) ran down the Strange Academy hallways excited to attend a guest lecture by vampire hunter Blade, she rushed past Howie, who turned and gave her a funny look.

(Strange Academy I#17) - Howie was present in the Strange Academy cafeteria when a fight broke out among several of the other students and he appeared shocked when Doyle Dormammu attacked Iric.

(Strange Academy I#18 (fb) - BTS) - Howie was convinced to leave Strange Academy alongside most all of the other students when Emily Bright opted to force the Academy staff to respect them.

(Strange Academy I#18) - After the students became hungry and impersonated Doctor Strange to order pizzas, Howie helped bring in the numerous pizzas, admitting that he was still a little freaked out that the renegade students were staying in Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum. During the subsequent pizza party, Howie enjoyed pizza and talked with fellow student Alvi.

(Strange Academy: Finals#1 (fb) - BTS) - Howie ultimately returned to the Strange Academy.

(Strange Academy: Finals#1) - Howie attended a second period Perception Reality class taught by the Scarlet Witch, where he was amazed when the Scarlet Witch used her powers to make Frost Giant student Gus appear the same size as the other students. When Doyle Dormammu attempted to cast a spell to change reality to his perceptions, the spell went wild and Howie and the other students found their own reality being transformed to match Doyle's thoughts of the still-renegade Emily Bright attacking with Dormammu.

(Strange Academy: Finals#2) - Howie was present at a Strange Academy Saturday assembly in which Doctor Voodoo welcomed back more of the students that had left with Emily Bright. Doctor Voodoo then announced that the students were to spend the day cleaning up the school grounds and Howie accompanied some of the students to the Habitatory to help clean up the area and the animals there. He later helped clean the school bathrooms and used his magical Third Eye to see the xenoplasmic parasites infesting the bathrooms. While battling the xenoplasmic parasites, Howie was sucked into the maw of one of them and yelled for help. The other students successfully drove off the parasite and rescued Howie, cramming the rest of the parasites into trash receptacles. Following the successful cleaning day, Howie joined the other Strange Academy students in a celebratory feast during which one of the students mentioned that expelled student Calvin Morse had returned to New Orleans to work for the magic wish dealer Gaslamp. When Howie and his friends learned from the student that Calvin might be in trouble, they gained information from troubled students the Burnout Boys and all decided to venture into New Orleans proper to rescue Calvin. During the rescue mission, Howie was tasked with distracting some of Gaslamp's dealers long enough for Shaylee Moonpeddle to down them. Howie then accompanied the students down into Gaslamp's headquarters, where they discovered the Drain, a large machine that siphoned off hopes and dreams to create the wishes Gaslamp dealt in. The students then split up to successfully find the captured Calvin but Gaslamp caught up to them. Howie and his friends managed to free Calvin from the Drain but as they were escaping, his classmate German Aguilar cast a spell to destroy the Drain that caused a large explosion of magical energy.

(Strange Academy: Finals#3) - A few weeks after their battle with Gaslamp, Howie and the other Strange Academy opted to host a fund raising carnival to raise money for the New Orleans French Quarter that had been damaged in the battle against Gaslamp. During the carnival, Howie and German Aguilar were tasked with cooking some of the food and Howie found what he thought was a recipe for fried calamari in a cookbook, only to quickly yell for help when the deep fryer began shaking. Zelma Stanton and Doctor Voodoo rushed over to help and when Howie explained the recipe he found in the cookbook, Zelma informed him that the book he was reading from was a book of secret spells meant to keep Multiversal monsters from devouring the planet, rather than a cookbook. Howie managed to weakly remind everyone that he had told German he wasn't a good cook before the demon Shuma-Gorath erupted from the fryer.

(Strange Academy: Finals#4) - Howie attended a class taught by Magik and as part of the class, he donned armor and accompanied Magik and a small group of students to Limbo/Otherplace as the students' final test in the course. Given one hour to survive Limbo, Howie and the other students fought against Limbo demons. He later accompanied several Strange Academy staff and students to assist during a major storm in the New Orleans area.

(Strange Academy: Finals#5 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, Howard Scott joined the Strange Academy school choir. When the Academy prepared for its annual commencement ceremony, Howard Scott was listed on the program as a soloist in a school choir performance.

(Strange Academy: Finals#5) - Howie attended the Strange Academy commencement ceremony, where he witnessed Doyle Dormammu visit with his human mother. When Emily Bright attacked the ceremony with Dormammu's assistance, Howie helped defend the school from Bright and her allies, which included former student and Howie's love interest Heidi. During the fight, Howie used magic to battle Heidi, whom he regarded as cute but always a game-player.

(Strange Academy: Finals#6) - Howie continued to aid the Strange Academy students against Emily Bright and her creatures summoned from the Dark Dimension. When Doyle Dormammu got into a duel with Bright, Howie and the other students backed off to give Doyle space to battle Bright. Doyle ultimately absorbed the dark magic of Bright into herself and Howie and the other students watched as the Vishanti Hoggoth absorbed the magic Doyle himself had absorbed, restoring Doyle to normal. Howie then stood by his classmates as they revealed to Doctor Voodoo that Iric had been killed in the battle against Emily Bright. A short time later, Howie attended a memorial service for Iric in which a large statue was unveiled in his honor.

It was not confirmed in-story that the wolf-boy Howie was the same character as Howard Scott, a Strange Academy student that is never seen, only mentioned as being part of Strange Academy's theatre and choir scene, it seems like a real possibility that they could be one and the same, as "Howie" is often short for "Howard." While there has been some discussion on the Marvel Database website and even amongst the Masters of the Obscure here at the Appendix about whether they are one and the same, the website Key Collector Comics straight up treats the two as if they are the same. With no other info to support or discredit the theory that they are one and the same, and for the purposes of this profile, I am treating this profile as if Howie and Howard Scott are the same character. If something comes along to definitively state they are two separate characters, I'll update this profile to reflect that.

Werewolves howl. This werewolf character's name is "Howie." He howls. Get it? Ok sure. It's a stretch...

Howie's origin was never revealed. While reading the issues, I assumed he was a werewolf, given their connection to Marvel's magical/horror comics (as well as the variant cover to Strange Academy I#18 showing Howie howling at the moon - see above), but not even once during his appearances do we see him transform back into human form nor is he only seen in wolf form during a full moon. He's pretty much in wolf form all the time. That could still have some sort of connection to lycanthropy but that could also mean any number of things. He could be a magically talented Inhuman or NuHuman, or even a mutant. Given his Earthly vernacular, I tend to think he's not some sort of extraterrestrial or extradimensional being but that could also be the case too. He could've theoretically been one of those types of beings who was raised on Earth or something. Point is, we have no way of knowing, given the information we currently have.

Despite Midnight Suns I#1 not being published until November, 2022, the story must take place prior to Strange Academy I#17, as all of the regular students are present in the issue. It must take place prior to Emily Bright convincing most of the students to leave the Academy. Howie's next appearances are in the Strange Academy: Finals mini-series, which wraps up the storyline involving the students leaving the school. That mini-series was published a month after Midnight Suns I#1.

Howie's eye color seemed to change depending on the art. Most often, his eyes appeared to yellow with black sclera but other times, they appear to be brown with white sclera, much like a normal sclera. Maybe his sclera turn black and his eyes yellow with more of the wolf side of personality is dominant?

Howie
should be distinguished from:

Battle Call

Battle Call was an online video game that Howie was a huge fan of. He played the game under the screen name of Hairystyles_56 and often spent his downtime destroying his online competition and earning the game's digital "Battle Bucks" to purchase downloadable content. After purchasing the game's BMFG weapon, he spent an entire night using it to destroy "fools" online, one of which was his fellow student Heidi. Later, during a period where Strange Academy was temporarily closed, Howie spent that time playing Battle Call with Heidi, who tricked Howie into having his character drop his weapons in exchange for a date with Heidi.

Battle Call was not actually seen in physical form. The closest we get are screenshots of the game seen on video screens in Strange Academy Presents: The Death of Doctor Strange#1, an image of which is seen here in this subprofile.
