Powers/Abilities: Inertia possessed the superhuman ability to psionically redirect kinetic force. She could use this for a variety of effects: from simply reversing the course of objects that were hurled at her, to keeping approaching assailants at bay by turning their momentum against them. She could also redirect the momentum of third parties and subject others to its effects. On one occasion, she knocked out Power Princess by subjecting her to the force of Hyperion's punches. Freiberg could also use her inertia-force to manipulate electronic devices, like wiping computer memory banks. It's not known how long Inertia can hold on to to momentum before she has to shunt it elsewhere. Inertia's energy cannot travel faster than the speed of light. There was an upper level to the amount of momentum she could handle--if she exceeded these limits, she lost control and risked getting pulped by the force she was manipulating. Inertia was trained in hand-to-hand combat by Nighthawk.
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 150 lbs.

Hair: Brown
History:
(Squadron Supreme I#12 (fb) - BTS) - Through unrevealed ways, Edith
Freiberg gained superhuman abilities, though she kept a low profile.
(Squadron Supreme I#7 (fb) - BTS) - Nighthawk, guided by Professor
Imam's mystical crystal, reached out to Freiberg.
(Squadron Supreme I#10 (fb) - BTS) - Concerned by the way
the Squadron Supreme was enforcing their rule of law through the
implementation of the Utopia Program, Freiberg joined up with
Nighthawk's Redeemers, a group of vigilantes and villains determined to
take down the Squadron. She adopted the costumed identity of Inertia.
(Squadron Supreme I#10 - BTS) - Several
weeks passed, during which time the Redeemers ranks swelled to include
ten members including Inertia. They trained in secret in Nighthawk's
luxurious New Troy manor and kept close tabs on the Squadron's
whereabouts and activities.
(Squadron Supreme I#12 (fb) - BTS) - Inertia fell in love with her
fellow Redeemer Haywire, who was over the moon with her.
(Squadron Supreme I#10) - During one of their regular
meetings, the Redeemers watched a recent news report on the death of Tom Thumb
and the introduction of the Hibernaculum,
designed to preserve life even in the face of certain death. Inertia
remarked that there was still no explanation given for the reason why
Hyperion was now wearing 'high-tech sunglasses'. They then all shared
what they'd learned about the Squadron and how they could use it to
speed up the team's downfall. Nighthawk followed this by turning the
subject to how the ten of them were going to overthrow the Squadron.
(Squadron Supreme I#11 (fb) - BTS) - It was decided that Inertia and the
other non-criminal members of the Redeemers would infiltrate the
Squadron Supreme as new recruits. Taking up residence in Squadron City,
they bid heir time until they were fully inducted and had complete
access to the team's sensitive technologies.
(Squadron Supreme I#11) - Inertia joined most of Squadron Supreme in an
outdoor training session that came down to nine spirited games of
capture the flag. Inertia had a tough time getting to the flag thanks to
Haywire's tanglewire keeping her, Foxfire and Doctor Spectrum at bay
long enough for his team to win the final game. Haywire and the others
were taken back to Squadron City, where later that evening they were
officially sworn in as Squadron members during a televised ceremony.
(Squadron Supreme I#11 - BTS) - That same night, Moonglow sent the
design schematics of the behavior
modification technology to their ally Master Menace.
(Squadron Supreme I#11) - Inertia was playing table tennis with Haywire
in the Squadron's dormitory when Moonglow came by to inform her Redeemer
allies that she had carried out the plan. Moonglow didn't appreciate
Inertia asking if she was really sure no one had spotted her.
Unconvinced by Moonglow's claims that she had carried out the plan
perfectly, Inertia decided to visit the labs the following day to wipe
the memory banks clean with her inertia force.
(Squadron Supreme I#11 & 12 - BTS) - As soon as Master Menace came
up with a way to undo the b-mod treatments, the Redeemers lured Lamprey,
Shape and Foxfire into a trap to return them to normal.
(Squadron Supreme I#12) - Inertia and Haywire were relaxing in the
Squadron City spa, though she noticed her lover was tense. He admitted
to feeling anxious about the Redeemers' upcoming fight with the Squadron
since he'd never actually been in a fight before. While Inertia tried to
assure him, their teammate Thermite spoiled the mood by turning the pool
into ice as a gag.
(Squadron Supreme I#12 - BTS) - Inertia attended the opening of the
Squadron's hibernacle in the capitol.
(Squadron Supreme I#12) - Inertia and the others revealed their true
allegiance to the original Squadron members when they returned to
Squadron City and found Nighthawk and their fellow Redeemers waiting for
them. Doctor Spectrum instantly bound all of them in place with his
prism, leaving the Squadron free to pick their opponents off one by one.
(Squadron Supreme I#12 - BTS) - Power Princess figured Inertia was a
threat and immediately lunged for her, only to find the young adventurer
was ready for her.
(Squadron Supreme I#12) - Borrowing the Whizzer's momentum, Inertia
redirected it to send Power Princess crashing into Doctor Spectrum--this
broke his concentration, freeing the Redeemers from their force bubble
constraints. Power Princess kept up the attack, but found Freiberg could
easily redirected her shield back at her. Power Princess put on the
pressure, figuring she might eventually tire out Inertia. However,
Inertia had no trouble keeping her at bay until she came up with a way
to stop her. Nearby, Hyperion was using his full strength to take on
Redstone. Inertia stole the force of Hyperion's blows and used them to
pound Power Princess into submission--after three punches, she went down
and didn't get up. When Inertia went to check on her opponent, Doctor
Spectrum mistook her concern for an attempted killer blow and blasted
Freiberg in the back.
(Squadron Supreme I#12 - BTS) - Inertia remained unconscious while the
deadly confrontation between the Squadron and the Redeemers continued.
The fight ended when Hyperion surrendered on his team's behalf.
(Squadron Supreme I#12) - In the aftermath, Inertia and the others paid
their respects to their deceased friends and allies in the Squadron's
morgue.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Inertia and
Haywire enjoyed their brief stint as super-heroes and decided to remain
with the Squadron.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1) - Haywire and Inertia were
enjoying a relaxing day at Squadron City's Kingsley Park. During a game
of frisbee, the playful, bratty Haywire used his tanglewire to snag his
girlfriend's bikini top and bottom. Inertia chased after her boyfriend
and used her powers to make his briefs drop as well. This led to
romantic interlude quietly observed by Moonglow who found the display
embarrassing and frustrating.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1 - BTS) - At the same time
Hyperion and Power Princess met with Professor Imam, who told them of a
coming threat from space (actually the Nth Man) that was going
to consume the solar system within the next 12 hours.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1) - Ten hours before the end
of the world, Inertia and the other Squadron members gathered to hear
Hyperion and Professor Imam explain the coming crisis. Hyperion ordered
the team to gather supplies for a one week trip into space while he went
out to secure the help of the brilliant villain Master Menace.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1 - BTS) - Hyperion waited
around while Master Menace escaped into the future to work on a plan to
save Earth with aid from Scarlet Centurion. After 15 years, they
returned to the present.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1) - Eight hours before the end
of the world, the Squadron hurried to Master Menace's base from which
they rocketed into space with Professor Imam, Menace and the Scarlet
Centurion by their side. As soon as they escaped Earth's pull, Inertia
and the others were shocked when their teammate Redstone suddenly began
to shrivel up.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1 - BTS) - Deducing that
Redstone's power and lifeforce were connected to Earth itself, Doctor
Spectrum rushed to get him back, but to no avail.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1) - Inertia quietly looked on
while everyone scrambled to carry out Master Menace's plan. However,
when it became clear that the entity was moving faster than anticipated,
she offered to use her abilities to slow the threat down. Haywire wasn't
sure she was up for it, but with the magical aid of Professor Imam and
Moonglow (secretly Arcanna Jones), she tried anyway. As
soon as she made contact with the approaching and ever-expanding menace,
she was overcome by its might and instantly vaporized into a
reddish-pink mist that smashed through the hull of Menace's ship into
space.
(Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe I#1 - BTS) - Shape and Moonglow
managed to seal the hull breach, but Haywire was so shocked and mad with
grief he wanted to go out and find her, spitting out massive amounts of
tanglewire that threatened the ship. Power Princess saw herself forced
to knock her teammate out.
(Avengers/Squadron Supreme I#1 (fb) - BTS) - On a mission with the
Avengers to stop Imus Champion from killing thousands, Haywire told
Hawkeye of the time he snapped Inertia's bikini strap with his
tanglewire, leading the two heroes to share a quiet moment about the
loss of a loved one.
(Avengers/Squadron Supreme I#1 - BTS) - After defeating Imus Champion,
the Squadron discovered an Nth
Projector that could return them to Earth-712. Haywire decided to
stay behind on Earth-616, feeling that without Inertia, there was
nothing for him to return home to.
(Avengers: Celestial Quest I#1-8 - BTS) - During his time on Earth, the
loss of Inertia slowly became an obsession for Haywire. When he learned
the Avengers were going into space to confront Thanos, the lover of the
goddess of Death, he tagged along in hopes of meeting her to demand that
she return Inertia to him. When Death refused twice, the crazed Haywire
dove into her body in hopes of retrieving Inertia himself (see
comments).

It's nothing short of miraculous that Haywire was still so hung up over
Inertia, given the fact that they were only together for a handful of
weeks between the formation of the Redeemers in Squadron Supreme
I#10 and the events in Death of a Universe that led
to her demise. Yet, Haywire kept pining after Freiberg years after she
was gone, even sacrificing himself to Death to try and rescue her. The
lady has pull, that's for sure.
A lot of characters die in Squadron Supreme: Death of a Universe, but
seeing Inertia get wiped out always stuck with me. No big, dramatic
fight, no heartfelt final words, no defiant last stand or a tearful
goodbye... Nope, she just turned into pink mist from one panel to the
next. .
Unlike most of the other members of Earth-712's Squadron Supreme, Inertia was not a direct analogue of a character from DC Comics.
Inertia, as part of the Squadron Supreme, was profiled in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe II#12 and on her own in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Master Edition I#33.
