History:

(Battle Action#1/1 (fb) - BTS) - Private Harold Judson became part of the US general infantry assigned to the Korean War conflict. During one skirmish, he received a harsh cut on his leg.

(Battle Action#1/1) - The other soldiers mocked him for being so careful taking care of his leg. They berated him for being selfish while he answered back about their apparent hypocritical talk of self-sacrifice for their fellow soldiers. Fellow soldier, red-bearded Carter emphasized the importance of team-playing in the army when Judson declared he wanted only to stay alive. June 1951, and the platoon marched for Weisan at the 38th Parallel. They engaged fierce resistance from North Korean forces resulting in bloody house-to-house battles. At one point, Judson was stabbed in the back by a hidden Communist soldier and Carter shot the foe. The other soldiers began to retreat with oncoming North Korean armor and the others told Carter to leave Judson behind, who still berated Judson as he lay injured, but he showed compassion and they took cover in a house; however, Carter was shot and unable to walk, so they crawled upstairs. The town was soon overrun with armored North Korean forces and Judson spotted Communists moving radio equipment into the house. Seeing North Korean soldiers move up the stairs fired up courage in Judson and he used his rifle to club the opposing soldiers to death, refusing to use bullets so as not to alert others. Carter watched as Judson changed into North Korean soldier gear and Judson made his way to the impromptu radio room and machine-gunned the operators dead. He then used the radio to alert US forces and request Weisan be bombed, knowing this meant self-sacrifice. The next day, as his platoon soldiers returned to the now rubbled Weisan, two soldiers mocked Judson, not realizing they had just passed his corpse.

I can't find Weisan (or a similar name) on the east coast of Korea around the 38th Parallel (which has come to divide North and South Korea). However, the caveat at the start to the story (and many such Atlas-era war tales) states "All names and places in these true-to-life stories are fictitious..."

CLARIFICATIONS :
Pvt. Harold Judson has no known connections to:

Carter

Carter was a fellow soldier in Private Harold Judson's unit in Korea. He was unimpressed with Judson's attitude of self-preservation and he emphasized the importance of being a team-player in the army. Later, during a fierce battle in Weisan, Carter saved Judson from further knife attack from a North Korean soldier, but was prepared to leave him to die; however, Carter showed compassion and they took refuge in a house as North Korean armored forces advanced and US forces retreated. Carter was badly shot by a foe in the house and unable to move. He witnessed Judson find courage and defeat the radio outpost the North Koreans had coincidentally set up in the house. Judson radioed for the US Air Force to bomb Weisan to destroy the North Korean armor, knowing it meant self-sacrifice, although in a turnabout, Carter was concerned it meant they would die too.
