History:
(True Secrets#21/1 (fb) - BTS/True Secrets#21/1 (fb))
- Janet Lawson idealized the glamor of movie stars and romance novels,
but felt insecure in her looks. She expressed herself in her passion
for painting, predominantly portraits, from her studio apartment, while
also finding time to take up amateur theater plus ballet and cooking
classes as distractions from painting. Her brother Larry recognized her
talent and sought to promote her.
(True Secrets#21/1) - Janet returned home after a
romance theater rehearsal to continue painting. Larry arrived to tell
her that he had successfully networked with prominent art dealer and
critic Douglas Bennett to exhibit her portraits. The three quickly met
and Bennett expressed how impressed he was with her work. Bennett took
Janet to dinner and she grew increasingly attracted to him, but became
deflated as she felt too plain looking for someone who pursued beauty.
Despite this, when back home, she was secretly smitten with love.
Bennett and Janet spent most of the next few days together; Bennett
even had famous artist Sigfried Lazlo give his high opinion of her work
to assuage Janet's lack of confidence. Bennett pushed a kiss onto
Janet, but she tearfully fled, thinking it lacked romance and lying she
was engaged. Disbelieving Bennett's affection, she cried in the park,
eventually returning to her studio where she found Bennett waiting for
her. Bennett had found out Janet's lie. The two revealed their true
feelings and Bennett assured her that he had fallen in love with her
inner beauty, which would endure and grow after they had married. The
happy couple kissed romantically.
Comments:
These romance stories often had the flavor of the time in which they were written, and nothing else to tie them into Marvel's sliding timescale. As such, it's likely that the stories took place at the time of publication rather than being part of the sliding timescale.

Debonair Douglas Bennett was the
biggest art critic
and dealer in the city. He pursued only what he considered beautiful,
be it art, restaurants or women. Larry Lawson, who saw the talent in
his sister Janet's portrait artwork, showed some of her artwork to
Bennett and the art dealer was so impressed that he wished to exhibit
her work in his gallery. At the initial meeting, Janet was overwhelmed
and Larry bowed out of the pursuant dinner invitation. However, modest
Janet felt he wasn't interested in her romantically, but was grateful
for his enthusiastic support. Bennett spent the following days with
Janet, even introducing her to the famous painter Sigfried Lazlo, who
also praised her work, to boost Janet's confidence. Having fallen in
love with her, he pushed a kiss onto her, but she lacked confidence that it
was romantic and fled crying. Janet lied she was engaged and Bennett
backed off, only to ask Larry if she truly was involved with someone.
Finding out she was indeed single, he waited at her studio for her return, and
declared his love and that her beauty was more than physical. Saying he
wanted to marry her, the two kissed romantically.
--True Secrets#21/1
Larry Lawson is Janet's brother and
has connections
with the art world. He managed to secure a meeting between his amateur
artist sister and Douglas Bennett, who ran the leading art gallery in
the city. Larry accompanied Janet to the meeting, but declined on the
later dinner invitation.
--True Secrets#21/1
Sigfried Lazlo was a famous and
well-respected
artist. Art curator Douglas Bennett had Lazlo come in and tell aspiring
artist Janet Lawson that her artwork was indeed of merit to assuage her
feelings of inadequacy. Lazlo praised Janet's artwork and that she
would one day be more famous than he.
