Powers/Abilities: Jamie Madrox was a mutant who
could absorb kinetic force and use it to instantly manifest fully
sentient copies of himself. As a result of extensive genetic
experimentation, the upper limit of his cloning abilities had been
increased. Because of these invasive, traumatizing procedures, Madrox
suffered permanent, crippling physical and mental distress, though his
clones did not appear inhibited by. Madrox retained a measure of control
over his clones who were all dependent on him for their continued
existence.
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 190 lbs. (by approximation)
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Brown
History:
(Amazing X-Men I#4 (fb) - BTS) - During the early days of Apocalypse's
reign, young Jamie Madrox's cloning powers were noticed by Mr. Sinister
and Dark Beast who were always looking to improve on the potential of
homo superior. En Sabah Nur saw use in Madrox's abilities to create
copies of himself that were pliable, yet able to act independently of
one another. He ordered Sinister and Beast to work on Madrox and after
extensive experimentation Madrox was now able to spawn thousands of
clones. As a result, he was left physically and mentally addled.
(X-Factor III#32 (fb) ) - Dark Beast used Jamie Madrox's cloning
abilities to supply himself with an endless stream of test subjects for
his often brutal experiments. McCoy called the poor, wiped out mutant
"like the answer to a prayer".
(Amazing X-Men I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Apocalypse encouraged the army of
Madrox clones to embrace his philosophies on the survival of the
fittest. En Sabah Nur's teachings formed the basis of a new, extremist
religious sect known as the Madri.
(Age of Apocalypse:
The Chosen I#1 - BTS) - The Madri were
tasked to be Apocalype's grand
inquisitors. In his new world order, they
served as his eyes and ears. The Madri
were allowed free reign, moving around
Apocalypse's realm without being
questioned.
(Amazing X-Men I#4 (fb) - BTS)
- The Madri were stationed throughout Apocalypse's empire, but their
main temple was built in Quebec, Canada. There, the ailing Jamie Madrox
was cloistered away. Kept in a spartan cell with only building blocks
and other children's toys to keep him occupied, Madrox spent his days in
solitude, only seeing people when the Madri needed him to increase their
membership.
(Amazing X-Men I#4 (fb) - BTS) - As the Madri spread their reign of
terror, stories about their origins and the fate of Jamie Madrox began
to spread, even reaching the X-Men.
(X-Calibre I#1 - BTS) - The Madri stationed at
Apocalypse's citadel in what was once called New York City held regular
prayer matins.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2 (fb) ) - The Madri were unable to oppose Magneto
when he invaded their facilities to free the powerful mutant psionic
Bennett Du Paris who they had been experimenting on.
(Blink I#1 - BTS) - Holocaust called on the perverted clergymen to help
him beat back the invading forces of Negative Zone despot Blastaar and
his army.
(Gambit & The X-Ternals I#1 - BTS) - Mudir Rictor led a contingent
of Madri in a failed attempt to stop Gambit, his X-Ternals and Magneto
from accessing one of Apocalypse's underground weapons caches.
(X-Calibre I#2 - BTS) - After Pale Riders member Danielle Moonstar
informed Apocalypse's forces that the religious Ghost Dance faction was
helping humans escape to Avalon, the Madri were sent to cleanse their
compound inside the abandoned Stark Industries factory. The Madri
massacred John Proudstar and his followers.
(X-Man I#2 - BTS) - A delegation of Madri were sent to cleanse a factory
facility where human bone marrow was processed into a potential
supplement to increase mutant powers. During their visit, the Madri had
a run in with the powerful psionic Nate Grey who defeated all but one of
the heavily armed zealots. The surviving Madri proceeded to inform
Apocalypse of Grey's existence.
(Amazing X-Men I#1 &2 - BTS) - The Madri and the Brotherhood of
Chaos accompanied Horseman Abyss to Maine to try and stop the Eurasian
Human High Council's attempts to evacuate the surviving human
population. When the Madri and the Broterhood failed in their mission,
Abyss killed the Madri cardinal who actually thanked the Horseman for
making him live up to Apocalypse's teachings.
(Amazing X-Men
I#3&4 - BTS) - The Madri and the Shadow King were tasked to
interrogate the mutant Bishop to access his memories of a timeline where
Apocalypse did not rule. Despite the Madri's torturous rituals that
lasted days, Bishop did not give up any pertinent information.
(Age of Apocalypse: The Chosen I#1
- BTS) - One of the Madri accessed
Apocalypse's restricted files on who En
Sabah Nur deemed worthy of survival and who
were destined to be forgotten. The Madri was
overjoyed to learn his order was counted
among the Chosen, but didn't realize
Apocalypse had caught him snooping. The high
lord made the Madri pay for his
transgression by killing him on the spot and
changing the entire order's designation to
"Forgotten".
(Amazing X-Men I#4 - BTS) - The X-Men made it to the Madri temple in
Quebec. While Storm singlehandedly freed Bishop from the zealots,
Banshee and Quicksilver sneaked into the temple to look for Jamie
Madrox. They moved in undetected thanks to Banshee's ability to knock
out guards by using a hypersonic signal to scramble the fluids in
their inner ear.
(Amazing X-Men I#4) - Quicksilver and Banshee were surprised to find
the originator of the feared Madri was actually a delirious, soiled
prisoner himself. Madrox, though drooling and glassy eyed, begged the
X-Men for death. This made Banshee wonder if they had the right to
kill a helpless man, even if it meant ending the threat of the Madri.
Before they could continue their ethical discussion, Apocalypse's
Horseman Abyss made his presence known. He had been tasked to oversee
Bishop's questioning, but suspected the X-Men might try to reach
Madrox. In the end, Banshee sacrificed himself so that Quicksilver
could escape with Jamie.
(Amazing X-Men I#4) - Quicksilver
managed to rush Madrox outside the Madri temple where Jamie, in a rare
moment of clarity, decided to save Pietro from having to make that
difficult life or death decision. Summoning every ounce of his
strength, he assumed control over his untold copies and took back the
"pieces of his soul" they took when they were spawned. The effort
proved too much for him: he died in Quicksilver's arms and all the
Madri instantly turned became lifeless husks.
(Age of Apocalypse I#4 - BTS)
- Years later, Sugar Man and Dark Beast recovered genetic material
from Jamie Madrox and dozens of other deceased mutants. They used
their DNA to create clones which the villains planned to properly
resurrect using energy they fed off of the Celestial lifeseed. Despite
the fact that they had three copies of Madrox available, they never
got around to reviving him before Humanity's Last Stand caused the
destruction of all the lifepods the clones were stored in.

Considering Earth-295's divergence point
from Earth-616 is the death of Charles Xavier, this means that there
was no one on Earth-295 to tell Jamie's father Daniel to move the
family to a remote farm in Kansas when his infant son's cloning
ability manifested themselves at birth. How he fell into the hands of
Apocalypse remains unrevealed.
The final issue of Amazing X-Men worked up to the big
reveal of the Madri's identity, oddly enough Fabian Nicieza himself
had already blown the secret in a random caption in Gambit &
The X-Ternals I#1. Still, for anyone who didn't read that book
(like me), it was a huge surprise.
Because most of the Madri are connected to Madrox, Jamie gets a brief
BTS credit for all their appearances. However, the Madri aren't
completely made up of Madrox clones: Mudir Rictor is also a member of
the order and very much his own person. Because so many of the Madri
keep themselves wrapped up, it's hard to determine who's a clone and
who isn't... Which is about as 90s Marvel as you can get, really.
