Powers/Abilities: Mari is presumably highly-intelligent, and she is certainly an expert in the field of medicine, experienced with the physiology of numerous alien races, although mutations performed by Galactus were beyond her ken.
She was apparently the head physician for the United Front, and she was respected and obeyed by those working with her.
Some Rigellians have various
psychic powers, including the ability to control minds (“mind-thrust”),
communicate via telepathy and mentally alter their physical density to
increase their strength.
Mari did not demonstrate any of these abilities,
although perhaps she increased her density to survive the explosive
energies unleashed by Firelord and Ravenous.
Unlike many Rigellians, Mari did not seem to have any racial prejudice.
History:
(Annihilation#1 (fb) - BTS / Annihilation Saga) <Annihilation
Day plus 183> - The United Front -- a collection of forces ("anyone or anything still able to hold a weapon") opposing
the Annihilation Wave -- established a base on Daedalus 5 on the
periphery of the Kree system. Nova (Richard Rider) served as the
commander-in-chief, with Peter Quill (formerly Starlord) as his second-in-command.
Mari, a Rigellian physician, became part of the medical support staff for the United Front.
(Annihilation#1) <Annihilation Day, plus 204> - Firelord incapacitated himself in the process of taking down Extirpia, one of Annihilus' queens, who was commanding the hive-mind structure of the assault; the Wave's assault subsequently fell into disarray and they were swiftly overcome by the United Front.
(Annihilation#1 (fb) - BTS) -
Former Galactus Heralds Red Shift and Stardust brought the inert
Firelord as well as Extirpia back to Daedalus 5.
(Annihilation#1 (fb) - BTS) -
Firelord was examined by staff including the Rigellian Mari, who had no
idea what to make of his Galactus-altered form.
Extirpia was physically
and mentally (via psi-baffles) restrained.
(Annihilation#1) <Annihilation Day plus 206> - When Rider and Quill visited the medical facility to check on Firelord, Mari recommended they isolate Firelord until they had a better idea of what they were dealing with. She further noted that none of the monitor readings on him made sense and that technically he was both dead and alive.
She remarked that whatever
Galactus did to him was "beyond anything we'd recognize. It's like trying to decipher the workings of a god."
Regardless, she assured Rider that they were doing all they could, and
he assured her that he never thought any different. He instructed her
that he wanted to know about any change in Firelord's condition as soon
as it happened, and she replied, "Yes, sir."
(Annihilation#2 - BTS) <Annihilation Day plus 212> - Annihilation Wave forces led by Ravenous assaulted Daedalus 5, and they were soon joined by the Centurions -- 100 superhuman warriors from each of the worlds controlled by Annihilus -- teleported in.
(Annihilation#3) - Emerging
from the medical facility, Mari was implored by Praxagora to take in
the seeming corpse of Kl'rt the Super-Skrull, and she reluctantly
accepted.
(Annihilation#3 - BTS) -
Having devised the means to use
Galactus' technology to devour worlds while feeding the energies
obtained into Annihilus' fleet, Thanos used Daedalus 5 as a
demonstration of this weapon.
(Annihilation#3) - As fighting
outside escalated, Mari instructed her subordinates to get the wounded
evacuated as far from the fighting as possible. When Ronan and
Ravenous' battle brought them into the medical facility, and Mari
futilely blasted Ravenous while chastising Ronan, "Just couldn't leave it outside, could you, Kree?"
As Ronan was incapacitated
shielding Mari
from Ravenous' assault, Mari was cast backward to land atop Kl'rt's
body, apparently knocking the slab holding him back into the chamber
containing Firelord.
Reviving, Firelord attacked
Ravenous, while Mari rushed outside, warning those nearby of the
explosive energies that were about to be released.
(Annihilation#3 (fb) - BTS) - While Ravenous escaped, the energies unleashed in the battle served to revive Kl'rt from his inert state.
(Annihilation#3) - As Mari crawled from the wreckage, cursing that the "muscle-bound, brain-dead imbeciles" had nearly blown her up, Kl'rt blasted off the debris covering himself, Firelord, and Ronan.
Phyla-Vell subsequently helped Mari into an escape starship.
(Annihilation#3 - BTS) -
While some of the United Front fled in the
starship, Drax dove back to battle the Annihilation Wave to give them time to escape.
As Thanos unleashed the Galactus Weapon, Red Shift and Stardust held back the assault long enough for the United Front's ship to escape the planet; both heralds were believed to have perished in the process.
However, for everyone they successfully evacuated, a dozen were left behind.
The United Front subsequently
dissolved, with some of their number resolving to continue a guerrilla war
against the Annihilation Wave.
(Annihilation#6 - BTS) <Annihilation
Day plus 268> - Rider considered the allies he and his associates
had lost track of and wondered if that was the way they had wanted it.
Amongst those allies pictured was Mari.
Comments: Created by Keith Giffen and Andrea DeVito.
For her few appearances, Mari was an interesting character. I'd like to see more of her.
