History: (Spider-Man Magazine I (#19)) - After being bitten by a radioactive monkey, Peter Parker gained superhuman strength and agility. Deciding to become a superhero, Parker donned mechanical vine-shooting devices as the adventuring but oddly-named Marsupial Man, soon earning the enmity of both Venom and Vulture.

Comments: Created by Robert McGovern.

Yes, yes. I'm aware that marsupials are mammals that often have pouches (kangaroos, for example) and I'm also aware that marsupials are not directly related to monkeys but cut the creator some slack. He was 11 when he created the character.

Earth-31338's Marsupial Man was the product of Marvel's Spider-Man Magazine's "What If?" section featured in later issues of the series in which the magazine asked a specific "What If..." question to its young readers and they would mail in drawings in response to the question. In the 19th issue of the magazine, readers were asked to draw images of "What If Peter Parker Had Been Bitten by a Radioactive Monkey, Instead of a Spider?" In this particular case, Marsupial Man was created by then-11-year-old Robert McGovern of Baldwin, New York.

After Spider-Man Magazine I#10, the issues of the magazine were no longer numbered and were only differentiated by the season and year the issue was published (i.e. "Fall, 1996," for example), as the magazine had moved from monthly publication to seasonal. According to the indicias of the Adventures of Spider-Man and Adventures of the X-Men trade paperbacks released a few years ago (which also reprinted some of the exclusive comic strips seen in Spider-Man Magazine), the issue that featured Earth-70475's Marsupial Man would have been #19.
