History:

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Whatever It Takes" (fb)) - When the Tanzanian Shani gave birth to Mjnari he wasn't breathing. It was the young Ororo Munroe who was present during Shani's labor who breathed life into his lungs, rescuing the baby. During Mjnari's recovery Ororo cared for Mjnari earning her the title of godmother.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Whatever It Takes" (fb)) - When Mjnari became a toddler, Ororo left the Tanzanian village to pursue her own future. She said her goodbyes when Shani and Mjnari were playing with a ball.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Whatever It Takes" (fb)) - Upon hitting puberty Mjnari manifested his mutant powers of superhuman speed. Although most mutants were shunned by their environment, Mjnari remained a valued and loved member of his community.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Whatever It Takes") - Mjnari was playing with his friends near Mount Kilimanjaro showcasing his superhuman speed to entertain them when he noticed a tear opening in mid-air, something which only he could see. In reality a tear had opened between Earth and the Astral Plane, possibly caused by Bishop's time travels, allowing the evil Shadow King to acces Earth.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Whatever It Takes" - BTS) - The Shadow King's arrival hadn't gone unnoticed as X-Man Jean Grey noticed the tear in the Astral Plane while searching for the missing Charles Xavier. Realizing Mjnari could be in trouble Storm and Rogue decided to investigate.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Whatever It Takes") - Eager to get his revenge on Storm and enslave her, Shadow King possessed Mjnari's body, causing his body to levitate. His friends merely laughed at the feat believing it to be another aspect of his mutant nature.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Whatever It Takes" (fb) - BTS) - Now possessed by the Shadow King, Mjnari destroyed the villages.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Whatever It Takes") - When Storm and Rogue arrived, Storm used her abilities to douse the flames while Rogue stopped a shed from collapsing. Noticing the sudden rain, the Shadow King realized his trap had worked as Storm had returned. Inhabiting Mjnari's body, the Shadow King approached Storm and Rogue much to Shani's horror. Storm urged her nemesis to let the boy go as she knew he wanted her, the Shadow King told her he would wait for her on the mountain top after which he left.

High upon Mount Kilimanjaro, Storm agreed to accept the Shadow King's possession in order to free Mjnari. As the Shadow King took possession of Storm he boosted himself, determined to rule Caïro as never before. Storm, however, refused to bend to the Shadow King's will, and she flew high into the air until the lack of oxygen drove the Shadow King from her body. Lacking a host body, Mjnari baited the Shadow King into trying to possess him again. Mjnari led him into the mountain fissure containing the closing portal to the Astral Plane. When inside of the Astral Plane, Mjnari quickly turned around and raced back out, while the Shadow King failed to escape before the portal closed, leaving him trapped again. With the threat dealt with, Mjnari was reunited with his mother and tribe after which Storm and Rogue returned home

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "The Phoenix Saga - Part V: Child of Light") - When Earth suffered a multitude of environmental disasters, Mjnari helped evacuate the Tanzanian Africa Beach Inn, getting the tourists to safety. Mjnari, like other heroes of Earth were unaware the disasters were the result of the Shi'ar emperor D'Ken using the M'Kraan Crystal.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Sanctuary - Part I") - When Magneto spoke at the United Nations, revealing his mutants-only utopia on Asteroid M, Mjnari and Shani watched the broadcast from their home.

(X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon - "Sanctuary - Part II") - Black Panther (T'Chaka) and the young mutant Mjnari were present on the African planes after the destruction of Magneto's Asteroid M, witnessing the return of the mutants who'd returned from the spacestation.

Comments: Original character created by Julia Lewald and AKOM Productions. (see Appearances list for full list of artists)

Mjnari was voiced by Jason Burke.

Although Mjnari is an original character his origins were based off a story from Uncanny X-Men I#198 (July, 1985) where Storm helps deliver Shani's baby and administers CPR and manages to save the child's life. However, in this story Mjnari is an elder tribe lawspeaker.

In "Sanctuary - Part I" we see Mjnari and Shani watch the news broadcast alongside a young boy. Although unrevealed he could potentially be Mjnari's younger brother.

The Marvel Wikia lists Mjnari's spelling as MjNari capitalizing the N. We researched the correct spelling of his name and found the following: In X-Men Adventures II#3 (February, 1994), which at the time of publications was meant to be the same reality (later retconned into being the pre-multiverse) had all the lettering in caps, with no way to tell if any specific letter is capitalized where others are not. Both the Disney+ subtitles of the episode and Eric and Julia Lewald's book X-Men: The Art and Making of The Animated Series (2022) use Mjnari. Only Eric Lewald's book Previously on X-Men: The Making of an Animated Series (2017) uses the MjNari spelling. Therefore we reached out to the Lewald's and Mjnari's creator Julia Lewald was kind enough to confirm the correct spelling is indeed Mjnari with the single capital M.

When, in 2015's Secret Wars, the Multiverse was destroyed following the incursions of planets it appeared as if Reality-92131 was drafted onto Battleworld as the Westchester domain. However, this has since been debunked. As such the reality seen in the two volumes of X-Men '92 (2015 and 2016-2017) now have their own reality-designation of Earth-15730. The X-Men '92: House of XCII (2022) series was inspired by both the animated series and Hickman's House of X run but is its own separate reality. The limited series X-Men '97 (2024), however, is Reality-92131 and bridges the gap between the original X-Men: The Animated Series cartoon and the new X-Men '97: The Animated Series cartoon.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Mjnari has no known connections to

Shani

Shani befriended Ororo Munroe when she arrived from Caïro. Quickly becoming friends, Munroe helped deliver Shani's baby and administered CPR to save Mjnari's life, earning her the title of godmother. Shani raised her son and was seen playing with the young toddler when Munroe decided to leave Tanzania. Years later, when Mjnari hit puberty, Shani saw how Mjnari manifested his mutant powers of superhuman speed. Although most mutants were shunned by their family, Shani accepted the boy for who he was.

When Mjnari became possessed by the wicked Shadow King she feared for his life and was grateful when Munroe, now called Storm, and her friend Rogue helped rescue the boy.

Shani was later seen alongside Mjnari and another young boy (possibly another son), watching a broadcast of Magneto speaking at the United Nations.
