form. Mossy is capable of growing vines from his body and it's possible
his entire body is composed of nothing more than vegetation, much like
that of the Man-Thing.
Mossy seems to be able to silently
communicate with his wife, Queen Blythir, though the way Mossy does so
is unrevealed. It's possible Mossy shares a telepathic bond with his
wife.
Height: Unrevealed (approximately 8'0")
Weight: Unrevealed (approximately 600 lbs.)
Eyes: Red
Hair: None (though hair-like green strands of vegetable matter
cover much of his body)
History:
(Strange Academy I#11 (fb) - BTS) - At some point when his son Toth was
still a small child, Mossy was letting Toth swing on his vines when
Toth lost his grip, fell and shattered his crystalline leg. Mossy and
his wife, Queen Blythir, helped piece together Toth's shattered leg so
it could properly heal.
(Strange Academy I#9) -
During the Strange Academy Family Day event, Mossy and Queen Blythir
visited the Strange Academy campus to spend time with their son, Toth.
Not long after Mossy and Blythir's arrival, student Shaylee Moonpeddle
and her mother flew up to them and Shaylee introduced her mother to
Toth. Mossy and Blythir silently waved to Shaylee's mother as Shaylee
rambled on and on, not letting anyone get a word in edge-wise. Once
introductions between everyone was done, Mossy was present when Dr.
Strange announced that it was time for some fun. Following a scavenger
hunt involving all of the students and their families, Mossy was
present as Doctor Voodoo announced an obstacle course called the Parent
Trap. When Doctor Voodoo gave the rules and yelled "Go!," Mossy took
off running through the obstacle course and was later present at the
end of the course alongside several other parents and Strange Academy
students. Dr. Strange then ushered Mossy and the other parents and
family members to follow him on a tour of the Strange Academy campus.
(Strange Academy I#11) - After
Toth was shattered by an unidentified assailant, Strange Academy staff
member Zelma Stanton located Mossy and Queen Blythir and they rushed to
Strange Academy to check on their son. Arriving as Weirdworld native
Catbeast was talking to Doctor Voodoo about using a resurrection spell
to restore Toth, Mossy grabbed Catbeast by the neck to strangle him
when Catbeast grew antagonistic towards Queen Blythir following her
comment about Catbeast being a former Weirdworld wizard who paid the
price for losing his way. Mossy continued to hold Catbeast down until
Doctor Voodoo calmed the situation, reminding everyone that Catbeast
might be their only hope at restoring Toth. Shaylee Moonpeddle then
entered the room and expressed a desire to help piece Toth back
together and Queen Blythir welcomed Shaylee's assistance, introducing
herself and Mossy. Mossy then watched as Blythir, Doctor Voodoo, Zelma
Stanton and Shaylee began piecing together Toth's shattered body. Mossy
then picked up a chunk of Toth's body and motioned towards Blythir, who
confirmed that the shard was not Toth's knee but rather, a piece of
Toth's hand. Once Toth had been mostly pieced back together, Catbeast
noted that there was still a piece missing and the exhausted Mossy and
Blythir slumped to the ground. When they realized the missing piece was
Toth's heart, Mossy watched as Queen Blythir became angry, announcing
that the attack that shattered Toth was no accident and demanding to
know who had attacked her son. Doctor Voodoo assured her they had hired
someone to investigate and, as if on cue, private investigator Howard
the Duck appeared on the scene and assured Mossy and Blythir that he
would find out who attacked Toth.
(Strange Academy I#12) - Once the attacker was revealed as student
Calvin Morse's demonic jacket, Misery, and the remorseful Calvin
provided the shard to restore Toth, Mossy stood silent as Queen Blythir
thanked Howard the Duck for his assistance.
(Strange Academy Presents:
The Death of Doctor Strange#1) - After the Asgardian Enchantress and
her twin sons, Strange Academy students Iric and Alvi Brorson, helped
defeated the Weirdworld wizard Pulsari, Mossy and Queen Blythir
appeared before the Enchantress and her sons and Blythir commended
Enchantress on helping to stop the curse Pulsari had placed on
Weirdworld.
(Strange Academy: Finals#5) - Queen Blythir rushed around trying to get ready to attend Toth's annual commencement ceremony at Strange Academy and she became annoyed when she was unable to find Mossy. Suddenly hearing water, the now-angry Blythir found Mossy taking a shower and ordered him to be ready to leave within three minutes, as she refused to be late to the commencement ceremony.
(Strange Academy: Finals#6) - After the commencement ceremony was
attacked by corrupted Strange Academy student Emily Bright and the
battle was magically moved elsewhere, Mossy and Queen Blythir, as well
as the rest of the Strange Academy students' families, were teleported
back to their children in the aftermath of the massive battle against
Emily Bright.
Comments: Created by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos.
In Strange Academy I#11, Queen
Blythir mentions that her husband's "name is too complicated, even for
me, so we all call him Mossy." His true name is unrevealed, perhaps
even unpronounceable.
To make matters somewhat confusing, both Mossy and the actual Man-Thing appear in Strange Academy: Finals#5-6. The best way to tell them apart (since they look identical) is that Man-Thing is usually also present alongside the Strange Academy faculty (and he utters a magic word at one point), whereas Mossy is usually only seen near Queen Blythir and is mute. Also, Man-Thing was the one present in the battle against Emily Bright, as Mossy and the rest of the parents were not present in that battle.
Since his wife Blythir has been
shown to be a Queen, it seems very possible that Mossy is a king,
although I suppose it's also possible he was a consort to the queen
rather than actual royalty himself.
While not outright stated, it
stands to reason that Mossy likely originated in the Forest of the
Man-Things on Weirdworld. We do see Toth in the Forest of the
Man-Things in Strange Academy: The Death of Doctor Strange#1 but Toth
could've easily just went there to have fun. That's not a definitive
statement as to his father Mossy's origins...
