History:
(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse
2005 I#1) - Born on Siberia's Ust-Ordynsky Collective, Mikhail Rasputin
was the oldest child of Nikolai and Alexandra Rasputin. He trained to be
an astronaut and was already a celebrated hero even before his mutant
powers manifested themselves. As the first leader of the Soviet Super
Soldiers, he came to be known as Russia's greatest hero. Eventually, he
welcomed his younger brother Peter into their ranks as the steel skinned
Colossus.
(Official Handbook of the Marvel
Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - When Apocalypse
and his forces came to Moscow, Mikhail fought them off in the streets of
the capitol. He killed the Horseman known as War and forced the retreat
of most of Apocalypse's warriors. Intrigued by the strength and courage
of this lone warrior, Apocalypse captured him and over the course of
several months turned Rasputin into his newest Horseman using
experimental brainwashing techniques.
(Official Handbook of
the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - As
Apocalypse's most recent Horseman, Mikhail led a group of Infinite
soldiers back to Moscow where he discovered Colossus was the new leader
of the Soviet Super Soldiers. This group fought valiantly, but proved no
match for their former leader. All but Colossus were killed. Despite
months of brainwashing, Mikhail could not bring himself to murder his
brother. Colossus almost broke through Apocalypse's brainwashing when
the X-Men arrived, driving him away.
(Official Handbook of the
Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1) - Mikhail went
into seclusion, using his reality-warping powers on himself. He
changed his flesh into a flesh-metal hybrid and opened up gateways
in his own mind that gave him powers that even Apocalypse had never
dreamed of. When Mikhail returned, Apocalypse placed him in charge
of his Eurasian campaigns.
(Hulk: Broken Worlds I#2 (fb) ) - On behalf of
Apocalypse, Mikhail made an alliance with the human scientist
Bruce Banner who offered access to his research if he was allowed
to satisfy his appetite for knowledge. While working for
Apocalypse, Banner designed a gamma bomb missile for him. The
warhead was encased in adamantium to make it invulnerable to
electromagnetic pulses.
(Official
Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1)
- During the culling of Scotland, Mikhail's hounds guided him to the
young were-mutant Rahne Sinclair. He had her beg for her parents'
lives, making the girl swear allegiance to Apocalypse only
to then kill her mother and father anyway.
(X-Men Chronicles I#2) - Shadowcat and
Colossus, along with their recent recruit Skin, helped save young
British psionic Jonothon Starsmore from Mikhail Rasputin and his
forces.
(Age of Apocalypse: The Chosen I#1 - BTS) - Apocalypse
listed Mikhail Rasputin and his fellow Horsemen
Holocaust, Abyss and Mr. Sinister among his Chosen,
deeming them all worthy of survival. However,
he noted that he actively
cultivated their internal power
struggles in order to weed out the
weak even among the strongest.
After all, in the new world he was
building there was only place for
the genetically worthy led by
himself.
(X-Universe I#1 (fb) - BTS) - At an unrevealed point
in time, Mikhail claimed Apocalypse's giant Celestial
spawned mothership as his own.
(Official
Handbook of the Marvel Universe: X-Men - Age of Apocalypse 2005 I#1)
- In the final days of Apocalypse's rule, Mikhail sensed a change
coming. He disobeyed his master and planned to take Eurasia for
himself by wiping out the Human High Council who were based in
London.
(X-Men Alpha I#1 - BTS) - When
Apocalypse ordered his four horseman to report to him
on Apocalypse Island (formerly Manhattan),
Mikhail was a baffling no-show. Holocaust reminded Abyss and Mr. Sinister that Mikhail's
absence was a most troubling development. After all, he told them, as
caretakers of a quarter of Apocalypse's sovereign nation, they had
responsibilities most grave.
(X-Universe I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Mikhail took his mothership to London
where he announced he would be arriving to talk peace. In reality, he
planned to manipulate the masses using the enslaved mutant Empath
whose his emotion manipulating abilities had been technology enhanced
to influence entire crowds. Rasputin arrived with a cadre of
cybernetically augmented humans he called his Stryfe Force and his
personal aide, the blind keeper Murdock.
(X-Universe I#1) - Mikhail's ship arrived over London and received a
massive escort from the human forces in ships armed to the teeth. Near
the airfield where Mikhail was supposed to dock, Mikhail's underling
Thing (Bruce Banner) caused an incident that resulted in the
destruction of the entire fighter squadron without it getting pinned
on Rasputin. Thanks to Empath's emissions, he was welcomed by the
people of London as a savior who seemingly offered peace. He even
managed to impress Eurasian security director Victor von Doom who
agreed to a tour of Mikhail's mothership along with fellow council
members Ben Grimm, Clint Barton, Sue Storm, Tony Stark, Gwen Stacy and
Don Blake. Once the ship was in the air again, Rasputin showed his
true colors, revealing his plan to have Empath work the crowds into a
fervor that would ultimately turn them into howling dogs that will
tear themselves apart.
(X-Universe I#2 - BTS) -
While Mikhail went to meet with the Human High Council inside Big Ben,
his human guests were taken prisoner and subjected to the Upscale
Program. Aware this might happen, Tony Stark had his mechanized heart
rerouted and rewired to cause a crude but effective feedback conduit
the minute Ship's automated machinery triggered it. With Ship's
power down, the prisoners were instantly freed. They quickly raided
the vessel's extensive weapons cache to arm themselves.
(X-Universe I#2) - Donald Blake, armed with an enhanced cane, walked
into the chambers of the Human High Council, which made Rasputin
realize his ruse had failed. No longer needing to pretend he had
peaceful intentions, he summoned his Stryke Force and used his control
over their cybernetic systems to guide the attack on the Human High
Council. Mikhail found himself opposed by Victor von Doom who had
commandeered the prelate's private flagship. Von Doom used the craft
to fire with deadly accuracy at Rasputin and his Stryfe Force. The
Horseman survived the barrage and then dared Von Doom to challenge him
directly. Before Victor could respond, Don Blake intervened. He
ordered Von Doom to use his ship to evacuate the council members.
Blake then proceeded to outfight the cybernetic prelate, ultimately
ramming his cane through the villain's chest. Don Blake forced the two
of them to plunge from the top of Big Ben to their deaths.

Considering Earth-295's divergence point
from Earth-616 is the death of Charles Xavier, this means that
technically Earth-295's Mikhail Rasputin largely had the same
upbringing as his Earth-616 counterpart. However, since this has not
(yet) been confirmed on panel, it's not included in the profile.
"I have heard among this clan... you are called the forgotten
man!" Well, did you evah... Mikhail is called the forgotten
Horseman because he barely factors into the overall story of Age
of Apocalypse. And yet, as a reality warper he is arguably the
strongest of them all. Magneto and his X-Men are lucky Rasputin was
too busy practicing his powers on himself, he could have potentially
ended the entire mutant rebellion with a wave of his hand. Instead, he
shifted himself into a low-rent cosplay version of his brother, launched a
failed charm offensive in London and died when a cripple stabbed him
with his tricked out cane. Oh, the humanity!
All locations mentioned are Earth-295, unless otherwise
specified.
