History:
(X-Man I#6 (fb) - BTS) - The mutant assassin known only as Rex came to
work for the Sugar Man when he ran Genosha. After successfully carrying
out several high stakes missions, he earned the trust of the brutal
extradimensional despot.
(X-Man I#6) - On Genosha, Sugar Man ordered Rex bring him the immensely
powerful mutant psi Nate Grey before others could claim him. Rex
received a wristwatch capable of detecting psionic activity, which he
used to track Grey down to the Swiss town of Montreux. At the local bar,
he pumped patron Sven Claris for information, casually blowing him up
inside his car once he learned Nate's exact location from him. Rex
brashly barged in on Nate and his ladyfriend Madelyne Pryor (in reality the Jean Grey of Earth-9575), demanding
he come with him before his own powers killed him. When Nate refused,
Rex fired a few warning shots from his gun, but soon found himself
telekinetically hurled outside with so much force he lost consciousness.
(X-Man I#6 -BTS) - Rex's words about his own powers prematurely killing
him left Nate rattled. He left with Madelyne before Rex could recover.
(X-Man I#6) - By the time Rex came to, Nate and Madelyne were long gone.
Rex checked in with the impatient Sugar Man, assuring him everything was
under control.
(X-Man I#7 - BTS) - Rex tracked Nate and Madelyne down to Paris, France.
He figured it best to lull them into a false sense of security by
staying out of sight until they let their guard down. He was unaware
that the Black Queen was also in Paris. Selene had taken an active
interest in Madelyne Pryor.
(X-Man I#7) - Right as Rex was getting ready to strike, Selene actively
involved herself in the situation. She used her magics to cause Rex's
communication equipment to malfunction, which distracted him long enough
for her to abduct Madelyne. Having his only friend vanish in front of
him caused X-Man to take off as well, once again leaving Rex
empty-handed.
(X-Man I#8 - BTS) - Rex eventually located Nate who had taken a job as a
deckhand on the S.S. Wendi taking a pleasure cruise in the
Mediterranean.
(X-Man I#8) - Under cover of night, Rex climbed aboard the S.S. Wendi,
brutally murdering a crewman unlucky enough to spot him. Rex covered the
deck with the man's blood and entrails, a calling card for X-Man who was
alerted by the psionic upheaval caused by the man's death. Soon, their
fight resumed but Rex grew concerned with Nate's lackluster performance.
He realized this might mean the youth had already burned himself up,
which made him useless to the Sugar Man. Rex overpowered Nate and
planned to shoot him through the head, but before he could pull the
trigger he felt a prick in his neck and then the world turned to black.
He had been killed by the Dark Beast with a single shot of his syringe
weapon.
(X-Man I#19 (fb) - BTS) - Rex was one of the
memories X-Man psionically gave form form and substance during his
confrontation with Mr. Sinister.
Comments: Created by Jeph Loeb, Steve Skroce, Bud LaRosa.
Rex has the interesting honor of being the first 616
counterpart of a new character created for 1995's Age of Apocalypse
event. On Earth-295 he served as En Sabah Nur's subservient personal
assistant. In the tried and true fashion of alternate reality
counterparts "our" Rex was a bloodthirsty assassin instead of a pencil
pushin' pushover.
Well, that is until Dark Beast jammed a lethal syringe in his neck and
literally pushed him over.
So, did Sugar Man seek out 'our' Rex when he arrived from Earth-295 in
the past of 616? It seems more likely that he used his mastery over
genetics to create clone copies of accomplices he was familiar with back
home. That would explain why this Rex looks a good 15-20 years older
than the original from Age of Apocalypse.
