SPACE DEMONS
Classification: Alternate Reality (Reality-5106) humanoid extraterrestrial (circa 2000 AD)
Location/Base of Operations: Unnamed planet,
interstellar space
Known Members: None named
Affiliations: None
Enemies: Rusty Blake, Captain Jet Dixon, LLA 38, Mxxptrm, Edgar Revere, Squires (all Reality-5106)
First Appearance: Space Squadron#3/6 (October, 1951)
Powers/Abilities: Space Demons are small
(ranging from 8" to 2', possibly indicating age) extraterrestrial
beings that are virtually indestructible and can exist in the vacuum
of space for an indefinite period of time. Possibly techno-organic in
nature (see comments), their lower body is a rocket capable of light
speed space travel. Their fanged mouths and sharp claws can tear
through toughened spaceship hulls and their scream generates panic in
beings near their swarming behavior. However, their focus of attack is
only on those who took them from their home planet.
Traits: Almost nothing is known of Space
Demons in their native habitat except that they seem docile enough to
capture with relative ease there. However, once removed from their home
planet and released from complete darkness, Space Demons are purely
focused on destroying the being that took them away. Once they consider
their kidnapper eradicated, they float aimlessly in space.
Type: Extraterrestrial biotechnological
semi-humanoid
Eyes: Two (on head)
Fingers: Five (including opposable thumb, all clawed)
Toes: Inapplicable
Skin color: Gray
Average height: Variable (8" - 2')
History:
(Space Squadron#3/6 (fb) - BTS) - Nefariously
ambitious space explorer Edgar Revere discovered the planet of the
Space Demons and captured many samples, locking them in complete
darkness in a large crate. Realizing their destructive capabilities, he
planned to frame his rival Captain Jet Dixon. Revere reported his
findings to the Secret Patrol, the undercover arm of Earth's Federation
and returned to Earth. Saturnian scientists were already aware of the
destructive nature of Space Demons: to destroy anyone who removed them
from their home planet (and the perceived threat to the kidnapper's
home planet).
(Space Squadron#3/6) -
Back on Earth, Revere secretly moved the crate to Dixon's spacecraft,
the Solar I. The next morning, Revere informed Major Dunning of the
Secret Patrol that Dixon was carrying destructive Space Demons in his
spaceship.
Although doubting Dixon capable of potential treason, given the
(perceived) threat to Earth, Dunning assigned agent Squires
to the Solar I, which left on a mission into new territory. Suspicious
of the undercover agent, scientist LLA 38 had crewmate Rusty Blake
search the spaceship for anything unusual, but he unwittingly released
the Space Demons from their crate. Their chaotic swarming nature
created panic, but LLA 38 remained calm and ordered the door be opened
and the Space Demons exited into space to hunt down their kidnapper.
Squires initially charged Dixon with treason, but saw reason and
approved the mission to pursue the Space Demons and rescue whoever the
aliens were after. Soon, the Solar I's crew's suspicions were confirmed
when they saw the Space Demons attack Edgar Revere's spaceship. Just as
the Space Demons were tearing into the ship's hull, Revere jumped into
space to escape and was saved by Dixon. The Solar I's rocket rays
destroyed Revere's spaceship, but the Space Demons were unharmed;
however, assuming their quarry had been destroyed, the Space Demons
floated aimlessly in space while the Solar I returned to Earth.
Comments: Created by uncredited writer & Werner Roth.
There's absolutely nothing to suggest that these
beings are demons in the literal sense; it seems more like a name given
by humans -- imagine piranhas being called "river demons", except these
space beings are only hunter-killers, not feeders.
Strange little critters. Given their lower "jet-engine" bodies have actual fins to help with with guidance, plus apparently unnecessary nostrils and ears, I suggest that these are techno-organic beings (or maybe cyborgs), possibly engineered at some point in the past and capable of reproducing. Although maybe they are an alternate reality evolutionary offshoot of Reality-5391's Jet-Men, who legs resemble jet tubes.
