History:
(Battle Action#25/6 (fb) - BTS) - During the Korean
War, concerned about the
effectiveness of American pilotless planes, which were undeterred by
anti-aircraft
fire and used as explosive missiles against important targets, northern
Korean Communist forces captured Korea's brilliant electronics engineer
Dr. Chun San Sun to devise a similar weapon they could use in the war
against UN and American forces in the south.
(Battle Action#25/6) - Communist military commanders
had Dr. Sun watch as another explosive-packed pilotless bomber plane,
guided by radio from southern Korea, hit a tank factory. Ordered to
build
a similar weapon to use against the south, Dr. Sun refused and was
imprisoned in harsh conditions. After two months, the frustrated
Communist commanders threatened to execute local villagers, so Dr. Sun
acquiesced. After four weeks, Dr. Sun had successfully modified a
twin-engine plane to remotely lift off and land using only a
short-range radio transmitter for control (the Communists did not have
a powerful enough transmitter for longer flights). The impatient
military commanders wanted to see how it worked from inside the plane
and Dr. Sun advised that he would join them to explain the operation,
but had secretly set the plane to follow the Americans' powerful radio
beam. Unable to correct course, they landed at an American airforce
base, where they all surrendered to surprised soldiers.
Comments: Created by uncredited writer & Joe Maneely.
While the naming convention in Korea is usually to
have the family name first, he is initially named in-story as "Dr. Chun
San Sun" by a Korean officer and "Dr. Sun" in subsequent panels.
The frontline between Communist and UN forces changed
markedly across the Korean War. The kidnapping of Dr. Sun is mentioned
immediately after the Communists' occupation of Seoul, so it could be
assumed there's a connection, hence his (former) base of operations
being Seoul.
