ZALGODIAN race
Classification: Extradimensional race
Location/Base of Operations: Unrevealed;
formerly an extradimensional (unidentified dimension; apparently the same realm that contained Egolix-7) realm;
they were certainly active on a certain starship and a satellite orbiting an unidentified crimson planet
Known Members: None
Affiliations: Formerly the Zalkor;
Enemies: None known
First Appearance: Warlock and the Infinity Watch#31 (August, 1994)
Powers/Abilities:
The physical nature and abilities of the Zalgodians are unrevealed,
although they operated in a satellite in which humanoid beings could
survive unaided.
They had technology for large space-faring vessels, shipping logs that could survive for centuries, and possibly satellites that could maintain a pre-set orbit even after being abandoned for centuries.
Based on the proportions of the
their ship, it would seem likely that they were roughly human-sized,
although their proportions, appearance, etc. were unrevealed.
This may or may not have been one of their skulls.
At least the Kalorion serving the Zalkor had access to virtually unlimited power but at the cost of losing his or her soul.
Traits: The Zalgodians were willing and able to be involved in space travel and to make an alliance with the cosmic being known as the Zalkor, feedings its addiction in return for access to virtually limitless power.
Beyond that, nothing else has been revealed about their culture and/or traits.
Type: Unrevealed
Eyes: Unrevealed
Fingers: Unrevealed
Toes: Unrevealed
Skin color: Unrevealed
Average height: Unrevealed
History:
(Warlock and the Infinity Watch#31 (fb) - BTS) - Untold
centuries ago, the race known as the
Zalgodians found the Zalkor, a cosmic being able to grant virtually
unlimited power but limited himself by immobility and an addiction to
the narcotic herb known as Skrimblatt.
The Zalkor either lived within a
satellite orbiting an unidentified crimson planet, or the Zalgodians
relocated the Zalkor there. Regardless, this satellite was a holy
shrine to the Zalkor.
Zalgodian high priests delivered the Skrimblatt, and one such priest would become the Kalorion, to whom the Zalkor could grant great power but only after that being had been stripped of his or her soul.
Under unrevealed circumstances, the Zalgodians perished.
They left behind a ship and the satellite.
(Warlock and the Infinity Watch#31 (fb) - BTS) - Ancient Zalgodian legend told about the supposedly mythical Zalkor, the Bestower of Unlimited Wishes.
(Warlock and the Infinity Watch#31 (fb) - BTS) -
Learning of the Zalgodian legend, Imperial Researcher Milos Abyss delved deeply
into the subject and became the most knowledgeable person about the
now-extinct Zalgodian race.
(Warlock and the Infinity Watch#31 (fb) - BTS) <Centuries after the Zalgodians' demise> -
Abyss was part of an archeological
away team composed of top scientists who were sent to examine a newly
discovered but centuries-old derelict spacecraft of unrevealed origin.
His
knowledge of the Zalgodians allowed Milos to decipher the ghost ship's
log and read their ancient star charts.
Realizing the wonder the the craft's crew had experienced before
suffering their untimely deaths and considering the knowledge too
precious to share with his co-workers, Abyss slew them all.
Abyss apparently destroyed the ship as he departed to prevent others from discovering it.
Following
the Zalgodian star charts, Abyss located the satellite, a holy shrine
that still maintained its orbit around some nameless crimson
planet.
By this time, the designers and resistant of the satellite were no longer even memory.
Within the immense, abandoned, and decaying hulk, Abyss followed the trail and ended up in the chambers of the Zalkor.
Knowing the legends and of the traditional bargain, Abyss gathered the Skrimblatt and made a deal with the Zalkor to become his next Kalorian. The Zalkor transformed Milos into the powerful but soulless Count Abyss.Comments: Created by Jim Starlin, Tom Grindberg, Bob Almond and Harry Candelario.
In the image of Abyss and the archeological team investigating the derelict ship, there looks to be a skull present.
I don't know why it would have been shown if it was not meant to represent a Zalgodian skull...but it is still unconfirmed.
Open discovering the decaying satellite, Abyss wondered:
If the
Zalkor really existed, how could the Zalgodians have come to this end?
An unforseen natural disaster?
A lightning fast disease?
He ultimately considered these questions to be lost in the sands of time and of no real importance.
There are many unanswered
questions about the Zalgodians, and, until/unless some writer decides
to pick up on the legend and provide more background on them, the
questions will remain unanswered.

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Zalgodians should be distinguished from:
The satellite that contained the Zalkor orbited a "nameless" crimson planet. Even centuries after the Zalgodians' death, the satellite maintained its orbit. --Warlock and the Infinity Watch#31 Note: Almost nothing has been revealed about this planet. Was the planet nameless, or was its name just not recorded in anything Abyss had found? Was the planet the home of the Zalgodians? Did the Zalgodians colonize it? Was it previously occupied by some other race, and the Zalgodians just occupied the satellite? |
