History: (Journey into Mystery I#94/2) - Laird lived in a world where peace prevailed, space travel was commonplace, and the greatest problem facing humanity was overpopulation. Due to overpopulation ever citizen had to work one day a week on a farm to provide food for the growing masses. It rankled Laird that a millionaire such as himself should have to work the fields. He bought a spaceship, and set out to find a world where he wouldn't have to work for his food. He chose the planet Deimos, and accidentally crashed his ship in his excitement. Laird was unharmed, and immediately ran towards a lush crop of vegetables. They turned out to be hostile aliens, and Laird had to flee to nearby caves. The friendly Deimosans took him in, but told him that there was a severe food shortage on the planet. Laird could share in their food, but only if he helped grow it for eight hours a day.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber.
It's unclear whether the Deimos in this story is Mars' moon or a planet of the same name.
