SUNDANCE
Real Name: Pascal "Pez" Guacana
Identity/Class: Human, technology user
Occupation: Rebel soldier
Group Membership: The Shadows
Affiliations: Hawkeye, Striker, U.S. government
Enemies: Advisor, Hawkeye, Hazzerd, government of San Revilla, Troubleshooter, U.S. Agent, War Machine
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: Mobile in San Revilla
First Appearance: Force Works#12/2 (War Machine: Brothers in Arms: Vicious Circle#1) (June, 1995)
Powers/Abilities: Sundance wore a costume that gave him the ability to bend light, rendering himself and a large number of others invisible, and to create weapons and shields of ‘coherent light’, and apparently generate a powerful explosive (energy? Laser?) blast, all powered by a device worn on his chest.
Sundance’s power made him The Shadows’ most important member, and knowing this made him overconfident. While he preferred to remain invisible during missions, fighting from a distance, he was willing to take on more experienced and powerful foes in hand-to-hand combat if necessary.
History: (Force Works#12/2 (fb, BTS))- The Shadows attacked an airstrip controlled by the government of San Revilla, killing both troops and refugees attempting to flee the country on a Red Cross flight.
(Force Works#12/2)- The Shadows attacked a government fuel store at Vitidos, concealed by Sundance’s power. When War Machine intervened, Striker struck him down from behind, and Sundance asked who their new foe was, having no knowledge of War Machine.
After War Machine recovered and defeated Striker, Sundance came to his aid, attempting to slice through War Machine’s armor with his coherent-light powers, and creating a shield that blocked War Machine’s punches, but was unable to protect him from a repulsor blast. With Sundance down, the other Shadows became visible.
(War Machine#15/2)- War Machine picked up the semi-conscious Sundance, and threw him to the ground while he confronted Hawkeye. As War Machine battled Striker, Hawkeye pulled Sundance to his feet, and aborted The Shadows’ mission, with Sundance rendering them invisible to cover their escape, and later, to conceal The Shadow’s base camp.
Sundance took part in The Shadows next mission, an attack on Preto Airstrip.
(Iron Man#317/2)- Sundance ordered the Shadows to attack the San Revillan government forces, but held back, away from the battle, and became invisible. After taking down Striker, Hawkeye began stalking Sundance, avoiding an attack from Sundance (apparently an explosive blast of some kind), and firing a smoke arrow and a magnesium-flare arrow, which blacklit the smoke, enabling him to target Sundance with an acid-capsule arrow that melted the systems in his costume. Hawkeye then defeated Sundance with a single punch.
Comments: Created by Dan Abnett & Fred Haynes
Sundance initially appeared to have some martial arts moves in his battle with War Machine, yet was easily defeated by one punch from Hawkeye. Maybe he was just faking the skills to go with his ninja-esque costume?
His real name was revealed in Advisor's profile in OHOTMU 2010 Update#5
