Freelance Restorations' leader Black Jack Tarr planned to have Xiao and Leiko Wu infiltrate the Red Wolves. As they worked together, Leiko comforted Xiao over the loss of his family, and tried to help him become a stronger person.

(Marvel Comics Presents#1/3)- Xiao was present when Shang-Chi was enlisted by Freelance Restorations to assist them against the Red Wolves.

(Marvel Comics Presents#2/3)- As Tarr briefed Shang about the Red Wolves, Shang noticed Leiko's affections for Xiao, and departed the briefing in frustration. He tried to confront Leiko at her room later that evening, but she was sleeping with Xiao, and turned him away. That evening, the Red Wolves assaulted Leiko, taking her captive and slitting Xiao's throat.

(Marvel Comics Presents#3/3 (BTS))- Tarr had Xiao buried with his family, and at his gravesite, recalled the words Sir Denis Nayland Smith had spoken at the death of their ally James Larner: "Never have I seen a pawn more nobly fallen." Tarr informed Shang how Xiao had come to seek their aid, and how he and Leiko had become involved, ultimately convincing Shang to return to Freelance Restorations.
