History: (Avengers I#29) - Dr. Yen was assigned to brainwash the Black Widow after she had failed the KGB in her attempts to destroy Iron Man. After succeeding with the brainwashing, Dr. Yen presented her to Hu Chen, his superior officer, who assigned her to destroy the Avengers.

(Avengers I#41) - When the Black Widow returned to China to meet with Colonel Ling, he and Dr. Yen flung her into a chamber containing the Psychotron, a new device designed to wear down an individual's sanity. They hoped to determine if the Psychotron could be used in brainwashing.

(Avengers I#42) - After releasing the Black Widow from the Psychotron, she pretended to be overcome with fear, but Colonel Ling and Dr. Yen observed from a secret room. When she attempted to break out of the room they placed her in, Colonel Ling filled the room with gas. Dr. Yen was disgraced by the failure of the Psychotron.
