COLONEL KUTUZOV
Real Name: Mikhail Kutuzov
Identity/Class: Human (Russian)
Occupation: Astronaut worker on the Starcore One space station
Group Membership: The crew of the Starcore One space station
Affiliations: Peter Corbeau, Dmitri, Geppi, Alexander Hilary, Talia Kruma (other crew members)
Enemies: None known
Known Relatives: None
Aliases: None
Base of Operations: The Starcore One space station in outer space
First Appearance: X-Men I#99 (June, 1976)
Powers/Abilities: Colonel Kutuzov had no superhuman powers, but was skilled at calibrating space shuttle instruments.
History: (X-Men I#99) - Aboard the Starcore One space station, Colonel Kutuzov announced that nearby solar flares were causing the Station's instruments to go haywire. Another crewman ordered Kutuzov to re-calibrate the instruments quickly.
(X-Men: The Return) - It was May and Colonel Mikhail Kutuzov was involved in a conversation with Colonel Mikhail Kutuzov and Dr. Peter Corbeau and Dr. Stephen Beckley; Beckley wanted use of the array for his work on the Edmund Project. Kutuzov pointed out that Beckley's presence was only a courtesy to NASA and refused the permission. They were interrupted by Talia Kruma and Alexander Hilary, who alerted them that an alien ship had emerged from behind the sun and was on course for Earth.
(Avengers I#344) - Onboard Starcore One (in its orbit just outside Mercury), Mikhail reported to Dr. Corbeau on the sun's worsening instabilities; the team determined that the sun's electromagnetic field had been "snapping back and forth like a rubber band," threatening to send the sun nova.
(Quasar I#32) - Mikhail was present when Quasar boarded Starcore One to ask about the sun's changes, and left the team an emergency device to contact him in case of emergency after they refused to activate the station.
(Wonder Man I#7 - BTS) - A massive solar flare headed for Starcore One, forcing all present to evacuate.
(Avengers I#345) - A massive solar flare destroyed Starcore One, though Mikhail and the seven other staffers evacuated into the Starcore lifepod; Corbeau had managed to send off a distress signal and they were rescued by several of the Avengers (Quasar, Thunderstrike, Sersi, Vision). A Shi'ar emerged from a wormhole/gate (this had been causing the destabilization) and opened fire on the Avengers and the pod but the Avengers drove off the Shi'ar and returned the Starcore One staff to Earth.
Comments: Created by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum, and Frank Chiara.
Colonel Kutuzov is given a first name (Mikhail) in the almost-certainly-out-of-continuity X-Men: The Return novel (by Chris Roberson). If accepted as his actual name, this also leads to the supposition that Starcore One's glasses-wearing Mikhail in Avengers #344-345 and Quasar #32 is likely Kutuzov as well.
X-Men: The Return - this novel is stated to take place just prior to Uncanny X-Men Annual I#10, which was summer, 1986. With that in mind, the events in the book would take place after Kutuzov's Uncanny X-Men appearance and before the Avengers appearance.
