History: (What If? II#11/2 (fb)) - After an experimental test flight into outer space, Reed Richards, Sue and Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm were bombarded with cosmic radiation. When they crashed back to Earth, they each discovered that they had been given the ability to stretch and shape their bodies at will. While Reed thought to use his powers for the good of mankind as a superhero, Sue and Ben thought their powers were ridiculously silly. Johnny Storm thought that superheroing was silly, but that his powers would go to better use helping him gain fame, fortune, and women.
(What If? II#11/2) - Deciding not to become superheroes, Ben Grimm and Sue Storm ended up discovering their love for one another and settled down to raise a family, never using their stretching powers again. Reed Richards used his powers, but only in the confines of his lab, as he devoted his life to science. Johnny Storm was the only one to go public, using his stretching powers to become a celebrity, under the name of Mister Fantastic.

Following the discovery of their stretching powers, both Ben and Sue thought that they were stupid powers for one to gain and vowed to never use them again. Finding themselves on common ground, the two decided to start a new life together, raising a family.

Since none of his comrades decided to use their stretching powers for the good of mankind, Reed Richards opted to help mankind the only way he knew how. He devoted his life to science and discovery, never going public and using his stretching powers only to aid him in his inventions.
