History: (What If? II#11/4 (fb) - BTS) - When their experimental shuttlecraft came into contact with cosmic radiation, Ben Grimm, Reed Richards, Johnny Storm, and Sue Storm gained their powers. Each received one aspect of the invisibilty power -- Sue could turn herself invisible, Reed could project the invisibility and turn others invisible, and Ben could project invisible force-fields -- while Johnny had the power to become intangible. As their shuttle crashed to Earth, they were greeted by Colonel Nick Fury, who offered them the chance to serve in his new C.I.A. unit, codenamed S.H.I.E.L.D. The foursome agreed, thinking it their patriotic duty, and a special secret unit of S.H.I.E.L.D. was formed, with each member specializing in his or her civilian areas of expertise.
(What If? II#11/4) - An unmarked helicopter attacked the S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters under the U.N. building in New York by wrapping it in an electrified net. The only demands were that Reed Richards be brought to the attacker, alone and unharmed. Nick Fury quickly rounded up the four members of his special unit of S.H.I.E.L.D. and explained to them that the criminal called himself Doom. Reed surrendered himself to Doom, while the other members of the unit secretly attached themselves to the underside of Doom's helicopter using their powers. Once Doom returned to his kingdom of Latveria with Richards, his castle alarms went off, revealing the presence of the others. Doom quickly hit a button on his throne, causing a trapdoor to open beneath Reed. With Reed's concentration broken, the other three members of the special unit were revealed, as Reed could no longer keep them invisible. As Doom attacked Ben and Johnny, Sue secretly left to find Reed. Sue soon found Reed in an airtight chamber and freed him, as Ben and Johnny continued to battle Doom. Doom managed to pull out a sonic accelerator, but Reed arrived and rendered it invisible. Realizing what Reed had done, Doom announced that it would take more than parlor tricks to defeat him. Ben took advantage of the distraction created by Reed and fired an invisible force barrier into Doom, knocking him into a wall and unconscious. The foursome turned Doom over to S.H.I.E.L.D. custody and Nick quickly barked at the foursome to get back to work.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. Special Secret Unit was comprised of Ben Grimm, Reed Richards. Johnny Storm, and Sue Storm. Reed could render others invisible, Sue could turn herself invisible, Ben could project invisible force fields, and Johnny could become intangible. Upon gaining their abilities they met with Nick Fury, who asked them to join S.H.I.E.L.D. One of their first missions for S.H.I.E.L.D. had them going up against Reed's old college roommate, Victor von Doom. Once Doom was defeated, the foursome returned to work for S.H.I.E.L.D.

DOOM
Victor von Doom was the monarch of Latveria and blamed Reed Richards for a disfigurement that he had suffered while in college, just like his Earth-616 counterpart. Doom attacked the S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ in hopes of killing the Special Secret Unit, to which Reed belonged. He was soon defeated by the Secret Unit and turned over to S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.
