History:
(Tales to Astonish I#3/4 (fb) - BTS) - Two weeks prior, an astronaut left Earth in his spaceship; his mission was to share Earth's vastly advanced culture and scientific knowledge with the relatively primitive inhabitants of Ursa Micromia.

(Tales to Astonish I#3/4) - An immense spacecraft landed on the outskirts of a city, and a huge alien emerged. Initially frightened by the giant from outer space, the people's fears were soon calmed when the giant told them he only came to share his knowledge and to help them advance their civilization.

As the giant walked into the city, he stepped in a lake (a mere puddle to him) and caused a flood; then he accidentally bumped into some buildings and caused them to collapse--fortunately, everybody was evacuated from the structures before they fell. The giant caused more damage along the way because of his comparatively large size to the relatively small city.

Embarrassed by the unintentional destruction he caused, and worried that he might cause more, the giant alien thought it would be best if he left the world. The people understood that he really meant no harm and regretfully bid farewell to him.

As his spacecraft left the planet Ursa Micromia, the "giant" astronaut took off his helmet and smoked a cigarette (see comments); he regretted the troubles he brought upon the tiny people, and thought of how good it would be to return to his home planet: Earth in the year 2744.

Comments: Created by an unidentified writer and Paul Reinman.

...so the "giant" was just an ordinary Earthman on a world of tiny people...oops, sorry if I ruined the surprise shock-ending for you.

(...by the way, "The Planet of the Apes" is really Earth in the future, and "To Serve Man" is the title of a cookbook!)

And a big THANK YOU to Dennis Giansante for originally scanning this story for me!

The "giant" astronaut kept his helmet on the whole time he was on Ursa Micromia--perhaps the planet's air was too thin for him to breathe.

Smoking a cigarette inside an enclosed spaceship with a limited air supply?! Only in a 1950s comic book...

This 4-page story was featured on the Jack Kirby cover, where the "Giant" appeared to be a lot more frightening, and he seemed to be intentionally destroying buildings.--Ron Fredricks

The people of Ursa Micromia have no known connections to:

Ursa Micromians

In Reality-59594, in the Earth year 2744 A.D., they inhabited the planet Ursa Micromia. They closely resembled humans, but were only a few inches tall, and their civilization resembled a North American city of the late-1950s.

When a giant from outer space landed on a rural area of their planet, the Ursa Micromians were initially fearful of the huge alien; but the giant told them that he only came to share his planet's advanced knowledge with them.

The giant walked into their nearby city, but his great size caused him to unintentionally destroy some of their buildings when he accidentally bumped into them.

The giant was embarrassed by the destruction he had caused, and thought it would be best if he left their world; the people understood that the alien really meant no harm.

The Ursa Micromians all watched as the giant boarded his immense spacecraft and took flight; they wondered if he would ever return.
