History: (Gunhawks#2 (fb) - BTS) - Grey Fox led his people in a raid on the plantation of Colonel Johnson, and took his maid Rachel Brown to be his own property.
(Gunhawks#3) - Grey Fox's village was assaulted by the U.S. Cavalry, led by Captain Warren Worth, and the few people who survived were taken prisoner at Fort Mitchell. When Grey Fox found Kid Cassidy among the ruins, he took him to be an enemy, even though Rachel insisted that Cassidy was an old friend of her's. Grey Fox fought with Cassidy, but was beaten in combat. Cassidy refused to kill him because his people needed him, but Grey Fox could not be satisfied, because Cassidy wasn't a brave. In order to let Grey Fox save face, Cassidy asked to become a brave, and Grey Fox set up his first ordeal: to run barefoot over a bed of hot coals.
(Gunhawks#4) - Cassidy survived the first trial, and Grey Fox began the second, which was to heat up spearheads and then press them against Cassidy's chest. He offfered Cassidy a piece of buffalo hide to bite while the trial lasted, but Cassidy refused. Rachel tried to convince Grey Fox that Cassidy was a friend, but Grey Fox refused to listen. They finally set Cassidy into the final trial, which was to face a grizzly bear with nothing but a knife, but Cassidy was so weak that he passed out. He was saved by his friend Reno Jones, who had just been captured by one of Grey Fox's scouting parties, but threw himself into the grizzly pen and slew it himself to save his friend.
(Gunhawks#5) - Grey Fox tried to kill Reno, but Reverend Graves appeared and told Grey Fox that he wouldn't trade him his rifles unless he released Reno to him. Grey Fox agreed, and began to arm his people for combat. Reno ultimately escaped Graves and rode back to the camp to warn them that the cavalry were on their way, and Grey Fox led his men into battle. Grey Fox's people lost the battle, but Grey Fox escaped with Rachel.
(Gunhawks#6) - Grey Fox attempted to snipe the cavalry's Captain Warren Worth from the trees while Reno and Cassidy were facing off, but Rachel threw off his aim, afraid that he would hit Cassidy. In fact, by knocking his rifle as he fired, Grey Fox did hit Cassidy, and apparently killed him. Annoyed with Rachel, he rode to a cave where he tied her up, and set off to kill Reno so that she would forget him forever. He found Reno attempting to bury Cassidy's body, and took him on in hand-to-hand combat, but was finally killed when Reno stabbed him in the stomach with a knife.
Comments: Created by Gary Friedrich, Dick Ayers and Jack Abel.
The American Civil War ended in 1865, and Gunhawks#1 opened one year later, so the events of the Gunhawks series would be set in 1866-1867.
