History: (2001: A Space Odyssey#8) - Dr. Haines served as assistant to Dr. Oliver Broadhurst on Project X at the Broadhurst Institute, as they attempted to perfect artificial life. However, the first 50 robots created went insane, and Haines opined that perhaps computers weren't meant to think. Broadhurst set the auto-destruct devices in all of the robots so that they could start over again, but model X-51, raised like a person by Dr. Abel Stack, escaped destruction. Colonel Kragg was sent to retrieve X-51, and succeeded. Haines and Broadhurst began to monitor X-51. Broadhurst feared that the removal of X-51's human face might cause him to go mad as well.
(2001: A Space Odyssey#9) - X-51 broke out and went on a rampage until Broadhurst and Haines agreed to restore his face to him. He took the name "Mister Machine" (later Machine Man), and was allowed to depart the project, albeit monitored by Dr. Broadhurst.
(X-51#1 (fb) - BTS) - Dr. Broadhurst was later reported dead, and Haines took his place at the Broadhurst Institute.
(X-51#1 (fb)) - Dr. Brodhurst was visited by FBI agent Jack Kubrick (actually an amnesiac Machine Man in the body of a Kubrick LMD), who was searching for information on Machine Man. Haines showed Kubrick around the institute, and revealed that the artificial life created at the institute was strictly non-humanoid now, to avoid repeating the mistakes of Project X. Haines then related the story of Machine Man's creation to Kubrick.
