History: (Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos#94) - Herbie's co-pilot and
bombardier nicknamed "Hawkeye" was having nightmares over their bombing runs, afraid that he was dropping bombs on children. Herbie slapped him in the face and told him to get on with their next mission, and not make moral
judgments.
On their next mission, Hawkeye and Herbie flew over a German town where a missile complex was located. Although the Howling Commandos had been sent in advance to warn the civilians of what was coming, they refused to believe them until the planes were overhead. Hawkeye and the other bombers dropped their loads on the missile complex, taking hundreds of civilians with it.
(Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos#96) - Hawkeye asked to be grounded, and Herbie arranged a meeting with Captain Sam Sawyer. Sawyer considered Hawkeye a coward, but Herbie convinced him to give Hawkeye one more chance. Sawyer assigned the two men to rescue the Howling Commandos, who were pinned down by Nazis at a cliff while retreating from the town. Herbie and Hawkeye arrived in just in time to begin attacking the scores of tanks which were converging on the Howlers' location.
(Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos#97) - As they bombed the Nazi lines, Herbie was glad to see that Hawkeye was over his doubts, but a shot from a German tank hit their plane in the right wing. Hawkeye bailed out, but Herbie remained on board, determined to complete his mission. Unable to control the plane, Herbie flew into a cliff, and was killed.
