History:
(Conan the Barbarian I#4 (fb) - BTS) - The fat Kothian kidnapper met a Count
from Ophir. The Count needed a maid for his wife, so he asked the Kothian to
find a beautiful, young woman in exchange for 300 pieces of gold.
For a long time the Kothian slavist sought for the right woman
in the town on the border until he found a beautiful Brythunian woman in Zamora .
He captured her with the intent of taking her to the Zamorian border where he
would have commit the woman.
(Conan the Barbarian I#4) - The night before the delivery day, the fat Kothian went to the Maul in Arenjun, to celebrate his capture and to boast his ability as kidnapper, teaching the people of a tavern how to kidnap girls. Slightly drunk he assured to a man with a patch that the woman was so beautiful that men could reveal the secret of the Tower of the Elephant for her. Near him Conan the Barbarian heard the conversation and asked him what was the secret. The Kothian was initially afraid of the big muscular man in front of him but soon started to taunt Conan for his ignorance about Yara and his Tower. Conan accused him of being a coward. The Kothian started a squabble and made the big mistake of grabbing his sword. Conan did the same, the only candle in the tavern was put out and when it was re-lit the Kothian laid on the floor in a puddle of blood. Conan didn't miss him. A tavern redheaded girl screamed the Kothian was dead.
Comments: Created by Roy Thomans, Barry Smith and Sal Buscema. Re-told by Roy Thomas, John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala.
The story was re-told years later in Savage
Sword of Conan#24. Roy Thomas decided so because this was his favorite Conan's
story and because SSoC#24 had more pages and it could better describe the
original Howard's novel. Some particulars were different but the history
basically remains the same of CB#4.
Although I love B.W.Smith's art, and CB#4 was colored, I still prefer the
SSoC#24 B/W version by Buscema/Alcala: a masterpiece!
