"PORCUPINE PUSS"
Real Name: Unknown
Identity/Class: Extradimensional (Negative Zone)
Nature of abilities: Unspecified (see comments).
Occupation: Soldier under the command of Blastaar
Group Membership: Baluuurian Army
Affiliations: Unknown
Enemies: Annihilus and his forces, Avengers (the Beast, Captain America (Steve Rogers), Hawkeye, Iron Man (Anthony Stark), the Wasp), Thing (Ben Grimm)
Known Relatives: Unknown
Aliases: Unknown
Base of Operations: Baluuur; mobile in Negative Zone
First Appearance: Marvel Two-In-One#75 (May 1981)
Powers/Abilities:
He achieves self-propulsion by unknown means (see comments). He is covered by large and hard protruding spikes covering the torso,
excepting its arms (and 5-fingered hands) and legs. It appears that the torso
is surrounded by spiky armor (see comments).
As a member of Blastaar's minions, it is anticipated
that it would have had some level of Baluuurian military training, suggesting peak
Baluuurian statistics, although evidently less than Blastaar.
It appears to be slightly taller than the Beast, probably around to 7'.
History:
(Marvel Two-In-One#75) - The character's origins are unknown, suffice to say
that it became part of Blastaar's minions in the Negative Zone.
(Marvel Two-In-One#75) - The Thing and several
Avengers (the Beast, Captain America,
Hawkeye, Iron Man, the Wasp), who had gathered at the Fantastic Four headquarters for a game of
poker, all enter the Negative Zone in response to a grief-laden plea for help
from Nyglar, wife of Blastaar. In a bid to prevent the Earth team from
interfering with Blastaar's plans and his tenuous alliance with Annihilus, many
of Blastaar's forces are dispatched to attack the team, with "Porcupine
Puss", so dubbed by the Beast, leading a squad of four of Blastaar's
soldiers against the Beast.
The Beast utilized
his uncanny agility to roll himself forward to attack his spiked foe, grabbing
one of its armored quills with his feet, throwing the space-soldier against its
comrades, presumably knocking them out for the rest of the battle.
Comments: Created by Tom DeFalco (writer), Alan Kupperberg & Chic Stone (artists).
It is difficult to determine if this bizarre
character's external appearance and apparent powers are derived from a suit of
armor (making it a technology user), or if it is a mutate/mutant (or a
combination). Its wide mouth, plus its legs and arms, suggests some affinity
with Blastaar's race, and I lean toward to a Baluuurian in armor. However, "Porcupine Puss" is
referred in the story as "it", yet Blastaar's race seem to be
distinctly made up of males and females, so this suggests it may be more of a mutate/mutant,
or even an android. Or perhaps I'm reading too much into it?
It seems very unlikely that this is a member
of a previously unseen race from the Negative Zone, as its ilk has not been
seen since.
Annihilus and his forces are listed as an
enemy in that, although it is not shown that "Porcupine Puss" actually
engaged them in battle, Blastaar's soldiers encountered them in direct conflict
later in the issue.
This seems to be an incredibly minor
character (3 panels), but I still would've liked a more sensible name for it.
MTIO#75 distinctly refers to the planet of "Baluuur", yet the Marvel Appendix refers to Blastaar's homeworld as "Baluur". Just a minor typo, but I've kept to the issue's spelling for this profile.
