Powers/Abilities: Schism was a humanoid figure, with the left half (when facing the character) white and the right half black, but had curly dark gray hair. Schism had the ability to split into two separate figures, with the same dimensions as when it was whole. Schism could also fly, apparently without the aid of an Imperial Flight Patch, although its flying speed seemed to be rather limited. Schism did not speak during this mission.
Notably, Schism appeared to be somewhat androgynous in appearance - until it split in two, upon which the white half appeared as a well-developed female, and the black half appeared somewhat male. This may have been characteristic of Schism's race (see comments).
History:
(New X-Men I#124 - BTS) - The Shi'ar Empress, Lilandra, her mind controlled by the villainous Cassandra Nova, who inhabited Charles Xavier's body, arrived in lower Earth orbit with a team of Superguardians, including Schism, under the leadership of Gladiator. Cassandra Nova used Lilandra to enforce the power of the Imperial Superguardian Elite to attack the X-Men, using a lie that the mutants were infected and had to be exterminated.
(New X-Men I#124) - Schism patrolled the outside of the Xavier Institute alongside Gladiator and Blimp, and met up with Oracle, Arc and Manta. Together with Blimp and Arc, Schism entered the Mansion and watched as Arc electrocuted Beast.
Wolverine, wearing an Imperial Flight Patch that he had taken from Neosaurus, smashed through an upper window, slashing at Schism and Blimp. Schism, almost instinctively, split in two to evade Wolverine's claws. Beast then leapt into the air, catching each half of Schism in each giant blue paw, and rammed their heads together, knocking the two halves unconscious.
(New X-Men I#133 - BTS) - Schism left Earth space along with the rest of Lilandra's Superguardians bound for Shi'ar space after the increasing and repeated manifestation of the Phoenix force in Jean Grey.
(War of Kings#1) - Vulcan surveyed, with Gladiator, the assembled Imperial Guard,. Mentor reported they were all battle ready and Vulcan announced his intentions to attack the Kree. They soon engaged in a massive battle with the Inhumans and Starjammers, successfully capturing Lilandra before retreating. Members of the Guard in this mission: Astra, Black Light, Earthquake, Electron, Fang, Flashfire, Gladiator, Hussar, Impulse, Magique, Manta, Mentor, Neutron, Nightside, Plutonia, Schism, Scintilla, Shapeshifter, Smasher, Squorm, Starbolt, Titan, Voyager, Warstar, and White Noise.
(War of Kings: Who Will Rule?#1) - Under Mentor's lead several Imperial Guard members (Astra, Black Light, Earthquake, Fang, Hussar, Impulse, Neosaurus, Neutron, Plutonia, Schism, Smasher, Squorm, Starbolt, Titan, Warstar) attended Lilandra's funeral. In front of the Inhuman Royal Family Mentor declared the Imperial Guard rulers of the Shi'ar Empire. Medusa attacked Mentor and Smasher, causing a big brawl between the Inhumans and the Imperial Guard. Gladiator hit the ground with a devastating punch, knocking out everyone around him, and asked everyone present to show some resepect for Lilandra. Crystal then gave Gladiator the sceptre and asked him to rule the Shi'ar Empire. The Imperial Guard bowed before him, accepting his rule.
Comments:Created by Grant Morrison (writer) and Igor Kordey (artist).
Although not actually named in the first X-Men storyline, Grant Morrison revealed the character's name in an interview with X-Fan.
Schism appeared initially to be a trainee Guardsman, as he/she displayed little fighting skills against the X-Men.
It may be that Schism's race are made up of black males and white females, and when they are in relationships, they form a single entity, effectively becoming halves to form a whole person.
Schism has more in common with Duo Damsel than Warstar does.
