Dozens of jet fighters and passenger planes can be supported in the vessel's hangars, and it staffs hundreds of crewmen. The vessel is also equipped with a variety of long-range ballistics, transporter technologies, escape pods, detainment cells, and weapons lockers.
History:
(see individual entries)
Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers.
There's got to be a few appearances I'm missing, so feel free to let me know what they might be.
I need all editors to check with me before modifying this document, as there are a lot of other immense S.H.I.E.L.D. vehicles that could be mistaken for an appearance by the Helicarrier.
I'm also going with a very crude chronology-- I'm more interested in collecting Helicarrier appearances than I am placing them in exact chronological order. Date of publication is fine in most cases.
According to Sidney Levine in She-Hulk II#17, Helicarriers cost nine billion dollars each.
I initially didn't think that the Helicarriers in Blade V#1 and New Avengers#23 were permanently downed, but Levine confirms this in She-Hulk II#17.
Ron Fredricks found an appearance in X-Men I#65.

CLARIFICATIONS:
The S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarriers should not be confused
with:
Designed by Forge, Reed Richards and Tony Stark, the first Helicarrier was sabotaged by Jake Fury in its maiden flight, and exploded. Production began on a second Helicarrier almost immediately. --Fury I#1d |
While the second Helicarrier was still in construction, it was invaded by the Dogs of War, but they were driven out by Iron Man. The second Helicarrier was the first to be commanded by Nick Fury, and it was aboard this Helicarrier that he was given the position as head of S.H.I.E.L.D. This Helicarrier withstood a mutiny by Agent 9. It was ultimately commandeered by the Grey Gargoyle and piloted towards the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where Element X was being held. Fury evacuated the Helicarrier before the facility shot the vessel down in order to defend itself. --Strange Tales I#135) Iron Man: The Iron Age#2, Strange Tales I#135, X-Men: First Class II#9, Strange Tales I#139,140,143,150,152,153,154, Avengers I#38,39, Strange Tales I#155,156,157,158, Sgt. The third Helicarrier was also commanded by Nick Fury, and withstood takeovers by the Viper, the Bi-Beast, the Red Skull, and Buck Richlen. It was ultimately taken over by the Cockroaches and crashed. Most of the crew survived, and the power core from the wreck was later stolen by Hydra as part of a scheme by the Deltite. --Captain America I#145 (148, Astonishing Tales#17,18, Marvel Team-Up I#13, Astonishing Tales#20, Marvel Team-Up I#19,20, Incredible Hulk II#188, Captain America I#188, Incredible Hulk II#199, Captain Marvel I#47, Captain Britain I#15,17,19,24,27, Marvel Two-In-One#26, Incredible Hulk II#212,213,214,215,216,218,219, Ms. Marvel I#17, Thor I#271, Captain America I#226,227, Iron Man I#118,119, Hulk Comic#1,2, Marvel Two-In-One#51, Marvel Team-Up I#83,84,85, Micronauts I#13,26,27,28,29, Spider-Woman I#37, Captain America I#268,282, Iron Man I#174, Thor I#337, Uncanny X-Men Annual I#7, Thor I#341, Rom#53,54, Uncanny X-Men#182, Incredible Hulk II#297,298, Iron Man I#185, Power Man and Iron Fist#121, Marvel Graphic Novel#18: The Sensational She-Hulkd, Nick Fury Vs. The fourth Helicarrier was usually commanded by Nick Fury, but also served Timothy "Dum-Dum" Dugan during his tenure as S.H.I.E.L.D. director. The construction of this Helicarrier (codenamed "Operation Rebirth") necessitated an increase in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ranks from the depleted numbers they had worked with since their dissolution battling the Deltite. This Helicarrier was ultimately downed by Onslaught's Sentinels, and the wreck was self-destructed in order to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. --Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. The fifth Helicarrier (sometimes called Blackhawk or Hermes-class) initially served under the command of G.W. Bridge, but Nick Fury soon returned to head the organization. Although it overcame a takeover by Ares, it was later conquered by the Red Skull, who based his organization "S.K.U.L.L." aboard it, alongside men such as the Mad Thinker and Hate-Monger, but Fury eventually led a team to retake the vessel. This Helicarrier was ultimately downed by the brainwashed superhumans serving Hydra and the Dawn of the White Light cult. --Sabretooth and Mystique#1 (Hercules and the Heart of Chaos#2,3, Kitty Pryde, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.#1,2,3, Thunderbolts I#15, Fury/Agent 13#2, Daredevil I#378, Cable II#58,61,62, Uncanny X-Men#362, Cable/Machine Man 1998 Annual, Machine Man/Bastion 1998 Annual, Uncanny X-Men#371, X-Men II#91, X-Men 1999 Annual, Fantastic Four III#23, Thunderbolts I#38, Captain America III#35, X-Force I#111,112, Captain America III#41,45,46,47,48, Elektra II#5, Captain America IV#10,11, The Call#3,4, Wolverine/Captain America#3, Daredevil II#61, Astonishing X-Men III#3, Avengers III#500,501,502, Cable/Deadpool#6,7,8,9,10, Daredevil II#64,65, Identity Disc#5, Captain America IV#32, Irredeemable Ant-Man#1-3, Wolverine III#21,23,25,26,27d |
The sixth Helicarrier (sometimes called Pericles) was commanded by Nick Fury until he was relieved of command. It was then commanded by Maria Hill, his successor. It was used as a holding cell for the Iron Maniac, a Diamondback LMD, and Titannus. This Helicarrier was destroyed by Blade after he found that all of the agents aboard had been replaced by vampires. --Wolverine III#31 (Hercules#4, Amazing Fantasy II#10,11, Secret War#1,5, Captain America V#2,4,5,6,8, New Avengers#3, Marvel Team-Up III#6, New Avengers#6, Fantastic Four: Foes#4,6, New Avengers#8,10, Daredevil II#77, Marvel Team-Up III#13, Cable/Deadpool#24, Astonishing X-Men III#13, Doc Samson II#2,3, New Avengers#16,17,18,19,20, Captain America 65th Anniversary Special#1, New Avengers: The Illuminati#1, Captain America V#16,17, Iron Man IV#7,11,12, Blade V#1d |
The seventh Helicarrier was commanded by Maria Hill. It saw a brief term of service due to an assault by Hydra, who caused the vessel to crash by firing off an EMP weapon. This Helicarrier was presumably designated "Pericles II." --Marvel Team-Up III#20 (Civil War#1, New Avengers#23d |
The eighth Helicarrier (sometimes called Perciles III) was initially commanded by Maria Hill. Command was transferred to Tony Stark when he assumed leadership of S.H.I.E.L.D., following the events of "Civil War." The Abomination, the Glob, U-Foes, Wendigo, Zzzax and Toad Men were all briefly incarcerated aboard this Helicarrier. This Helicarrier was finally downed by the Skrulls at the outset of "Secret Invasion." S.H.I.E.L.D. itself was swiftly dismantled in the aftermath of the incident. --Cable/Deadpool#33 (Civil War: Choosing Sides#1, Captain America IV#22, New Avengers#25, Captain America V#24, Punisher War Journal II#1, Civil War#7, Civil War: The Confession#1, Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America#1-5, Sub-Mariner II#1, She-Hulk II#15-18, Black Panther IV#26, X-Men Annual III#1, Iron Man IV#15-18, Irredeemable Ant-Man#4-6, Mighty Avengers#3-4,8,11-12, Ms. Marvel II#13, Punisher War Journal II#5-6,8, Omega Flight#1, Nova IV#1-2, Captain America V#28, Incredible Hulk III#106, Heroes For Hire II#11/2, 13/2, Irredeemable Ant-Man#10-12, World War Hulk: Aftersmash - Damage Control#1, Marvel Comics Presents II#2, Avengers: The Initiative#7, Iron Man Annual II#1, Captain America V#32-34,37,42, New Avengers Annual#2, Iron Man IV#21-23,25-32, Last Defenders#1,3-5, Eternals IV#2, Captain Marvel VII#2-3,5, Avengers/Invaders#1-8, Invincible Iron Man#1,4,6, Moon Knight V#24, Secret Invasion#1d, 3-5, Invincible Iron Man#8 |
This Helicarrier was assembled from the wreckage of earlier Helicarriers (possibly the first through fourth's), and served as the headquarters of a hivemind of Nick Fury LMDs that had become sentient. It was destroyed by Stem Cell of Project: Livewire using pyronanos. --Livewires#4 (5,6d |
Named for General Samuel Sawyer, Nick Fury's one-time commanding officer, this carrier is specially geared for combat, and features twin flight decks. It is commanded by Major Tom Aramaki, and was first observed when it was deployed against the seemingly-rogue Iron Man 2.0. This carrier features an enormous flight squad, anti-superhuman weaponry including autocannons, Cape-Killer squads, 38 heavy-assault drones armed with tank-killing armaments, a "contingency omega" missile and 75 high-risk LMD "Red Eyes" combat pilots. --Iron Man: Hypervelocity#3 (4, 5, 6 |
Mini-Carriers are smaller versions of the Helicarrier; there are several of them at service at once, although they are difficult to tell apart from the actual Helicarrier. The most notable Mini-Carrier is #13, used by Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) as the base for her Operation: Lightning Strike team. Gabe Jones has also commanded several Mini-Carriers. --Ms. Marvel II#13 (14-20, Irredeemable Ant-Man#7, Incredible Hulk II#107, World War Hulk: Aftersmash - Warbound#1, Incredible Hercules#113-114 |
This garish new Helicarrier model was based on the color scheme of Tony Stark's Iron Man armor. He allegedly had it built because the old one "smelled." It was smashed out the sky by the Red Hulk. --Mighty Avengers#1 (King-Size Hulk#1, Hulk II#2-3d Personally, I refer to it as the "Hubris-carrier" |
