Maxwell tired after having transported TritonHistory: (Namor the Sub-Mariner  I#58 - BTS) - He worked with Dr. Vivian Morgan, studying the Azores Island.

(Namor the Sub-Mariner  I#60 (fb) - BTS) - Maxwell discovered that the undersea volcano R9 formed off the Irish coast on the Atlantic Ocean was the linchpin for the tectonic shifting occurring all along the mid-Atlantic range including that which was affecting the Azores Islands. Maxwell shared this discover with Dr. Vivian Morgan.

(Namor the Sub-Mariner  I#58) - Maxwell was assured by Vivian Morgan that the Azores Islands were sinking.

(Namor the Sub-Mariner  I#59) - Dr. Maxwell followed Vivian Morgan to see the cavern where a cult of Darkholders attracted Vivian the night before. They didn't find the cavern. Maxwell was surprised to see the Sapphire Pendant but was more surprised when they found the injured body of Triton the Inhuman (having survived the explosion of an atomic submarine). They didn't know Triton so they soon thought to have a great scientific discover under the eyes.

(Namor the Sub-Mariner  I#60) - The two doctors brought Triton to the Institute Oceanographica of Ponta Delgada. Maxwell suggested to Vivian to bring him to the local constabulary but she enraged and scratched his face. Maxwell, bleeding, went away, declaring that Vivian seemed another person. Maxwell could not know that the Sapphire Pendant was transforming Dr. Morgan in Morgan Le Fay.

(Namor the Sub-Mariner  I#61) - Later, the two went off the coast of Ireland using their research vessel. Vivian Morgan dived in the depths and forced Dr. Maxwell to wait on the vessel. He was worried because it was unsafe to dive alone and also because he noticed hard changes in Vivian's behavior. Maxwell believed she was planting a simple geothermal sensor instead she set some explosive charges up around the volcano R9. When Vivian emerged, Maxwell was surprised to see she had magenta hair. He tried to speak her about her last, strange actions but she pulled him off the vessel and fled away. Minutes later, the charges exploded probably killing Dr. Wilfred Maxwell.

The volcano R9 erupted. As predicted by Maxwell, an earthquake struck Atlantis, the ocean floor under Atlantis rose 15 meters and violent tremors rocked the Arores Islands.

(Namor the Sub-Mariner  I#62) - Another earthquake struck Atlantis. Eventually Morgan Le Fay succeeded in causing Atlantis Rising!

I don't think Wilfred Maxwell is the same Dr. Maxwell who worked at Gamma Base, the two seems different for hair, physique and probably for work.
