ADZE
VAMPIRES
Classification: Presumably supernaturally altered humans
Location/Base of Operations: Guyana
Known Members: Adze (aka. Mother of Pestilence), Anita Alomii
Affiliations: Dracula, other vampires
Enemies: Benjamin Alomii, Avengers (Black Panther/T'Challa, Iron Man/Tony Stark), Blade (Eric Brooks), Enzo Ferrara, Lucas Telling-Stone
First Appearance: Tomb of Dracula IV#1 (December, 2004)
Powers/Abilities: As vampires, the Adze consume the
blood of humans, and those slain by having their blood drained by the Adze will
become Adze themselves. They can be killed by a wooden stake through the heart,
though they can get so fired up on adrenaline that they don't realize their own
destruction until ten minutes after they are destroyed, enabling them to keep
fighting.
They presumably have superhuman strength.
Adze hide their true insectoid form by usually shapeshifting and staying in humanoid forms. They can also transform into snakes and presumably other vermin.
The Adze's vulnerability to sunlight (probably), religious symbols, etc. is unrevealed, as is whether the possess other powers or limitations.
Traits: The Adze consume the blood of humans for sustenance. They are savage warriors.
History: The origin of the Adze vampires is unrevealed.
(Tomb of Dracula IV#1 (fb) - BTS) - Mrs. Alomii was transformed into one of the Adze vampires.
(Tomb of Dracula IV#1 (fb)) - Mrs. Alomii devoured her own children and then went on a rampage, destroying half of her native village. Her husband, Ben Alomii, cleansed those victims who remained in the village, preventing the plague from spreading outside his native province. He completed the task by staking and destroying his own disease-ridden wife.
(Tomb of Dracula IV#1-3 - BTS) - Adze vampires were amongst the many vampires of the world summoned to Castle Dracula in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania to protect Dracula during his performance of the Ritual of Ascendance.
(Tomb of Dracula IV#3 - BTS, Tomb of Dracula IV#4) - Adze were among the army of vampires that attacked Noah van Helsing's vampire hunters: Benjamin Alomii, Blade, Enzo Ferrara, Lucas Telling-Stone. Enzo staked one of the Adze but failed to realize that this wouldn't instantly kill it, and the vampire chomped down on his throat.
SECRET WARS III HAPPENED
(Avengers VIII#14 (fb) - BTS) - After the fall of Castle Dracula, a horde of Adze invaded Wakanda by turning into snakes and slithering through the sewers. The Adze took over the Vibranium mine in the Great Mound in an attempt to get their hands on the rare ore in an arms race with other vampire factions.
(Avengers VIII#14) - Black Panther and Iron Man took on the Adze in the mine. Iron Man burned them to death with his solar-irradiated repulsor beams while Black Panther did his part with his technology as well to get rid of the vampire threat.
Comments: Created by Robert Rodi, Bruce Jones, Jamie Tolagson, Tom Palmer, and Jay Leisten.
Not sure if any/all of these are accurate, but apparently the Adze are a real part of vampire mythology. Google them and don't mistake them for the cutting tool by the same name.
In Blade III#12 a prophecy was
fulfilled that brought back all vampires that ever died. This most
likely included slain Adze vampires as well. We'll have to wait if they
resurface.

Mrs. Alomii's first name was revealed in Vampires: The Marvel Undead#1 (December, 2011).

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Adzes should be distinguished from other types of vampires:
![]() |
(Black Panther: Blood Hunt#1) - The Adze aka. Mother of Pestilence attacked Birnin Zana in Wakanda during the long night (a ritual by Varnae that blocked out the sun). She feasted on Wakandans until she was attacked by the Black Panther, who had been turned into a vampire by Varnae. She asked him to just let her feast, but got injured by his spear and eventually took off while cursing Black Panther for not allowing her to fill her belly. Black Panther knew that she would heal and likely return soon. --Black Panther: Blood Hunt#1 Notes: This creature is presumably the source of the Adze vampire strain or at least their leader/queen. The people attacked by her presumably turned into Adze eventually. With her enormous size it is unclear if she can shapeshift the same way other Adze can. |
