First Appearance: What If? II#15 (July,
1990)
History: (What If? II#15 (fb))
- When Galactus was near death after being confronted by the ghosts of those
he killed thanks to Doctor Strange, Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four saved
him, only to have Galactus then consume the Skrull homeworld. Reed was soon
transported into outer space where he was placed on trial made up of a council
of survivors from the worlds that Galactus had consumed. While the trial
continued, Nova pleaded to Galactus to help defend Reed but, feeling no
obligation to Reed, Galactus went about his business of finding worlds to
consume.
(What If? II#15) - The council eventually found Reed guilty
of allowing Galactus to live to threaten new worlds and he was executed in
front of the other FF members' eyes. Demanding vengeance, the remaining Fantastic
Four attempted an attack but Uatu the Watcher wanted no part of a vendetta
and returned the FF back to Earth. In order to return to space, the Thing
broke into Reed's lab and the team used a confiscated Skrull saucer to return
to space as Gladiator of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard questioned Lilandra's
judgment. For questioning her actions, Gladiator was order to take a leave
of absence from the Imperial Guard just as Starbolt, Impulse, and Hobgoblin
arrived with news concerning the Skrull saucer entering their airspace. The
Human Torch then flew out of the saucer and destroyed the Shi'ar ship sent
out to investigate the disturbance. In retaliation, the Shi'ar sent out their
whole armada but the Invisible Woman used her powers to weld the Cosmic Control
Rod to the saucer's weaponry, allowing the saucer to fire a blast that not
only destroyed the armada but the entire Shi'ar planet. While the Fantastic
Four returned home horrified at what their revenge plan had done, an
intergalactic council was meeting with the end result being that Earth must
be destroyed. Unknown to the other representatives of the council, Empress
S'Byll of the Skrulls plotted to use an Omni-Wave Projector to destroy all
of the races gathered to destroy Earth. While such a plot was being thought
up, the Invisible Woman went on television and admitted to the Fantastic
Four's crime of vengeance; and in fear of alien retaliation, the United Nations
turned command of their Armed Forces over to S.H.I.E.L.D. The Fantastic
Four eventually decided that rather than sitting around waiting to see if
the alien armada would attack, they would steal the guarded Skrull saucer
they once used and attempt to talk things over. Once back into space, their
Skrull saucer picked up readings from the Omni-Wave Projector. The FF attempted
to send a message to Gladiator warning of the Omni-Wave Projector but they
could not get a message through. In an effort to keep the Projector from
destroying the other races, the three surviving FF members focused all their
strength into attacking the Projector, causing it to detonate, destroying
them and Mars' moon Deimos. Back on Earth, the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. prepared for an alien attack only to have Gladiator telepathically contact
Earth and announce that they had discovered that the FF had sacrificed themselves
attempting to save the other races from Skrull treachery. Gladiator then
announced that their sacrifice had ended the cycle of vengeance.

This reality diverged from Fantastic Four I#262.
This reality was given its core continuum designation in the Marvel
Encyclopedia Vol. 6: Fantastic Four.
As the Watcher tells the story of Reed's trial in this issue, he mentions
that it was he who transported the Fantastic Four into space. Given that
information, I believe that the Uatu present on this alternate reality was
actually Earth-616's Uatu but I suppose one could argue that 616's Uatu was
just telling the story of his place in the Earth-616's Reed's trial and that
he is actually telling a story involving Earth-907's Uatu.
At different times in the story, Karant Kiar is referred to as either
"Karant Kiar" or "Karant Kar." I chose to go with "Kiar."
I wonder if Franklin would be able to resurrect the Fantastic Four in
another dimension, like his Earth-616 counterpart did to the heroes who "died"
fighting Onslaught? Hmmm...

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Avengers were basically the same as their Earth-616 counterparts
up until the Fantastic Four accidentally destroyed the Shi'ar throneworld.
In preparation for what they assumed would be alien retaliation, the Avengers
allowed themselves to work under the direction of S.H.I.E.L.D. Before
the retaliation came, the Fantastic Four destroyed themselves saving members
of the alien council from Skrull treachery.
They were: (left to right): Doctor Pym, Vision, the Scarlet
Witch, Hawkeye, Nick Fury (not a member), Wonder Man, Iron Man, Captain America,
and Thor.
--What If? II#15
Daredevil
Daredevil was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart. When the Fantastic
Four admitted to accidentally destroying the Shi'ar throneworld, Daredevil
announced that he hoped that Earth could work with the aliens to set up an
interplanetary court of law to adjudicate the matter.
He presumably had the same superhuman senses and radar sense that
his Earth-616 possessed.
--What If? II#15
Colonel Nick
Fury
Col. Fury was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart up until the Fantastic
Four admitted to accidentally destroying the Shi'ar throneworld. Expecting
alien retaliation, the United Nations put the world's governments in the
hands of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Nick Fury being in command of the superheroes
who volunteered to help against the impending invasion. Before such an attack
could happen however, Gladiator appeared to Fury and the world's armies and
announced that the Fantastic Four had sacrificed themselves to save the other
alien races, making them even and he agreed to leave Earth's
atmosphere.
Fury presumably did not age due to his ingestion of the Infinity Formula,
like his 616 counterpart.
--What If? II#15
Galactus
Galactus was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart up until Reed Richards
saved his life from execution. When Reed went on trial for his actions, Galactus'
herald Nova begged Galactus to take a stand against the execution but Galactus
opted to not get involved, claiming that he was not obligated to rescue
him.
Galactus had the same immense cosmic powers that his Earth-616
possessed.
--What If? II#15
Gladiator
Gladiator was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart up until Reed
Richards was executed by order of Lilandra. After Reed's death, Gladiator
questioned Lilandra's order and for his questions, she ordered Gladiator
to leave the throneworld on a leave of absence. While he away, the remaining
Fantastic Four accidentally destroyed the Shi'ar throneworld, leaving Gladiator
as the only surviving Shi'ar representative. He quickly called an intergalactic
council and rallied the other alien races to attack Earth in retaliation
but upon witnessing the remaining Fantastic Four sacrifice themselves to
save the council from Skrull treachery, Gladiator called off the attack.
He then telepathically contacted Earth and announced that they were once
again even.
He presumably had superhuman strength, breath, durability, flight,
and other powers that his Earth-616 counterpart had.
--What If? II#15
Human
Torch
Johnny Storm was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart up until Reed
Richards was executed by the Shi'ar. In retaliation, Johnny and the remaining
FF members used a Skrull saucer to travel to Shi'ar throneworld where they
equipped with it Annihilus' Cosmic Control Rod. Using the newly-upgraded
weapons, Johnny and the others accidentally destroyed the throneworld with
the saucer. Returning to Earth in guilt, the FF admitted their guilt to the
public and waited for alien retaliation until they decided to instead travel
back into space and attempt to make amends. Once in space, the Skrull saucer
discovered the Omni-Wave Projector that the Skrulls intended to use against
the other races within their council. In an effort to protect the other races,
Johnny and the other FF members destroyed the Omni-Wave Projector at the
cost of their own lives.
Johnny could burst into flame, manipulate fire, and fly, like his
616 counterpart.
--What If? II#15 (#15d,
Invisible
Woman
Sue Richards was the same as her Earth-616 counterpart up until her
husband Reed was executed by the Shi'ar. Determined to gain revenge against
those who killed her husband, Sue led the remaining Fantastic Four members
in retaliating against the Shi'ar, accidentally destroying their throneworld
in the process. She then returned with the team to Earth where she went on
television and admitted their crime. While the world waited for retaliation,
Sue was prompted to apologize by her son Franklin and she led the remaining
Fantastic Four back into space. Once in space, they discovered that the Skrulls
planned on using an Omni-Wave Projector to spread a virus to other races.
To save the other races, Sue and the others focused their powers on the
Projector, causing it to explode and kill them as well.
Sue could turn invisible and project force fields, like her Earth-616
counterpart.
--What If? II#15 (#15d,
Karant
Kiar
Karant Kiar was a Skrull who testified against Reed Richards, exclaiming
that the Skrull throneworld was destroyed thanks to him. He later allied
himself with the Skrull Empress S'Byll in a plot to infect other races with
a deadly virus using an Omni-Wave Projector that would make Skrulls the dominant
race.
Karant Kiar, like most Skrulls, could change his shape at will.
--What If? II#15
Louis
Louis was a guard at the United Nations building where the Fantastic
Four's Skrull saucer was being held. He and his partner were shocked when
the saucer suddenly took off, not realizing that the Fantastic Four had hijacked
it using the Invisible Woman's invisibility powers.
Louis carried U. N.-issued weapons.
--What If? II#15
Mister
Fantastic
Reed Richards was the same as his Earth-616 up until he helped spare
Galactus' life. For giving Galactus a continued existence, Lilandra ordered
Reed to stand trial. She found him guilty and had him executed.
Reed had the same stretching abilities that his 616 counterpart
had.
--What If? II#15 (#15d,
Lilandra
Neramani
Lilandra was the same as her Earth-616 counterpart and because of
his involvement in the continued existence of Galactus, she ordered that
Reed Richards be executed. When Gladiator questioned her orders, she ordered
him to take a leave from the throneworld. Eventually, the remaining Fantastic
Four retaliated against the Shi'ar, accidentally destroying the Shi'ar
throneworld and Lilandra along with it.
She presumably possessed the telepathic powers that her Earth-616
counterpart had.
--What If? II#15 (#15d,
Nova
Frankie Raye was the same as her Earth-616 counterpart and as herald
to Galactus, she pleaded with her master to take a stand against Reed Richards'
execution. Galactus denied her pleas and ordered to leave to find more planets
for consumption.
Nova had part of the Power Cosmic, allowing her to fly and project
flames, like her Earth-616 counterpart.
--What If? II#15
Punisher
The Punisher was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart and when the
Fantastic Four admitted to accidentally destroying the Shi'ar throneworld,
the Punisher announced that he thought they did what they had to. He then
warned the "Shi'ar" that if they knew what was good for them, they'd call
it even.
He more than likely just used a whole lotta guns, like his 616
counterpart.
--What If? II#15
Franklin
Richards
Franklin Richards was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart up until
his father was executed by the Shi'ar. After his mom, uncle, and Ben Grimm
returned from accidentally destroying the Shi'ar throneworld, Franklin asked
his mom why they didn't just apologize. Once Sue had thought of the idea,
she decided to take the FF back into space to apologize but once there, they
discovered a Skrull plot to kill all other races, sacrificing themselves
to destroy their weapon and leaving Franklin an orphan.
He presumably had the same reality-altering abilities that his Earth-616
counterpart had.
--What If? II#15
The Shi'ar Imperial
Guard
The Imperial Guard was the same as their Earth-616 counterparts up
until Reed Richards was executed by order of Lilandra. When the remaining
Fantastic Four retaliated, Lilandra sent the entire out to stop them but
the FF accidentally destroyed the throneworld (and the Imperial Guard along
with it) using their weapon, which had been upgraded with Annihilus' Cosmic
Control Rod.
They were: Impulse, Hobgoblin, Starbolt, Gladiator (not pictured),
numerous other not identified or clearly seen.
--What If? II#15 (#15d,
Silver
Surfer
Silver Surfer was the same as his 616 counterpart and upon discovering
that the remaining Fantastic Four had accidentally destroyed the Shi'ar
throneworld, he announced that the universe would be poorer due to the
violence.
He presumably had the same cosmic powers that his 616 counterpart
had.
--What If? II#15
Spider-Man
Spider-Man was the same as his 616 counterpart and agreed with the
Silver Surfer in response to the Fantastic Four's destruction of the Shi'ar
throneworld.
He presumably had the same superhuman strength, agility, spider sense,
and ability to cling to walls that his 616 counterpart had.
--What If? II#15
Empress
S'Byll
S'Byll was very similar to her Earth-616 counterpart. She was made
Empress of the Skrull Empire following the death of Empress R'kll when Galactus
ate the Skrull throneworld. When many alien races gathered to attack Earth
following the destruction of the Shi'ar throneworld, S'Byll plotted with
the other Skrulls to destroy the other races using an Omni-Wave Projector
but her plans were halted when the Fantastic Four sacrificed themselves to
destroy the Projector and expose the plot.
S'Byll, like most Skrulls, could change her shape at will.
--What If? II#15
The
Thing
Ben Grimm was the same as his 616 counterpart up until Reed Richards
was executed by the Shi'ar. In retaliation, Ben accompanied the remaining
Fantastic Four members in gaining revenge against the Shi'ar, accidentally
destroying the Shi'ar throneworld in the process. Later decided to make an
attempt at making amends, Ben once again accompanied Sue and Johnny into
space where they discovered the Skrulls plotting against the other races
using an Omni-Wave Projector. Ben and the others attacked the Projector,
causing it explode, saving millions of other races but killing them in the
process.
Ben had superhuman strength and durability, like his Earth-616
counterpart.
--What If? II#15 (#15d,
Wolverine
Wolverine was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart and when the Fantastic
Four admitted to destroying the Shi'ar throneworld, Wolverine welcomed any
alien retaliation.
He presumably had the same superhuman senses, claws, and healing factor
that his 616 counterpart had.
