History: (What If? I#34/51) - Without the invention of unstable molecules, the Fantastic Four's uniforms were unable to conform to their powers. Reed could stretch but often ended up showing skin since his uniform did not stretch with him and the Invisible Girl could turn invisible but her clothing would remain visible. When the Human Torch yelled flame off, he was naked, his fire powers having burned up his uniform.

This reality diverged when Reed Richards did not discover unstable molecules.
Unstable molecules, for those of you just joining us, are what allow the Fantastic Four (as well as other heroes)'s uniforms adapt to their superpowers. That would be why the Human Torch doesn't burn up his clothing, etc. etc.
