First Appearance: What If? II#32 (December,
1991)
History: (What If? II#32 (fb)) - During
a mission in space, Jean Grey opted to protect the X-Men from the cosmic
radiation using her telekinesis. While dying from the radiation poisoning,
she was contacted by the Phoenix Force, who wrapped her in a cocoon and assumed
her form and identity. After saving the universe, the Phoenix was duped into
becoming the Hellfire Club's Black Queen and eventually, she began to hunger
for new emotions, killing an entire star system. Eventually, the Shi'ar Empire
demanded that Phoenix be turned over to them in order to safeguard the universe.
The X-Men disagreed and agreed to a trial by combat against the Shi'ar's
Imperial Guard for the life of Phoenix.
(What If? II#32) - Following the X-Men's defeat in the trial
by combat, the Shi'ar gave Phoenix a psychic lobotomy, removing her powers
and her threat to the universe. Tired and spiritually crushed, Phoenix left
the X-Men, married Cyclops, and attempted to live a normal life. As the X-Men
battled numerous foes in the following months, Phoenix began to lose sleep
dreaming about those she had killed as Dark Phoenix. As Cyclops tried to
comfort Jean, Magneto appeared before them causing Cyclops to instinctively
fire an optic blast at him. Magneto quickly wrapped Cyclops in parts of his
own home and agreed not to hurt Cyclops if Phoenix accompanied him back to
his headquarters on Asteroid M. While aboard the Asteroid, Magneto offered
Phoenix a chance to restore her lost powers as the X-Men made their way to
the Asteroid to save her. The X-Men soon arrived and battled Magneto as Phoenix
entered the device supposed able to restore her powers. She eventually denied
the Phoenix inside the machine and destroyed it. Angry, Magneto demanded
that Phoenix would pay, but she yelled that it was people like Magneto who
made humans fear mutants to begin with. Claiming that he chose his path long
ago, Magneto demanded the X-Men leave and the X-Men returned to Earth where
Phoenix completed the college career that the real Jean Grey never could,
taking a degree in education. Soon after, Phoenix and Cyclops had a child,
whom they named Rachel, and Phoenix became a teacher of the young New Mutants,
teaching them never to think their powers placed them above humanity. Months
later, when the X-Men and New Mutants were involved in the Secret Wars, Phoenix
was once again attacked by Mastermind, who tortured her with illusions until
she struck him down, only to discover that he was a host body for the Shadow
King of Earth-616. The Shadow King forced Phoenix onto the astral plane where
he forced Mastermind to shoot Phoenix's body dead and then announced
to Phoenix's astral form his plan to make Rachel, heir to the Phoenix Force,
his next host body. With the Jean Grey form dead, the Phoenix Force revived
it and restored her powers to the Jean Grey form. Realizing that her life
as Jean was a lie, the Phoenix traveled to Jamaica Bay where she destroyed
the real Jean Grey.
(What If? II#33) - Determined the find the Shadow King, Phoenix
traveled to Muir Island where she was attacked by her daughter Rachel, aged
by the Shadow King to an adult form. Phoenix then forced the Shadow King
onto the astral plane where she drove him from her reality, leaving the adult
Rachel with her nine-month-old mind. She then rebuilt Rachel atom-by-atom,
transforming back to her original form and returned to the X-Mansion where
the X-Men and New Mutants were surprised to see her alive and well.
Eight years later in 1988, after the X-Men had fought many new foes
and gained new allies, an anti-mutant candidate, David Russell, was elected
president. With Russell as President, the Mutant Registration Act was passed
in 1990 with the Avengers and Fantastic Four falling in line with the government.
The X-Men soon became outlaws and one night, as Phoenix wandered to herself
how could end all of it right now, Wolverine walked past Rachel's room and
found her having a nightmare about the Phoenix Force. While Wolverine spoke
with Rachel, the Phoenix decided to pay a visit to President Russell, forcing
him telepathically to change his views on mutants. The next day, after changing
his views publicly, President Russell was assassinated by members of the
militant anti-mutant group the Right. In response, the new acting President
phoned Henry Peter Gyrich and had him develop new Mark V Sentinels in an
effort to preserve the United States against the growing mutant threat. Upon
activation, the Mark V Sentinels quickly took control of America to better
"protect" it and began to eliminate any opposition, starting with registered
superhumans, including the Avengers and Fantastic Four. Soon, the remaining
unregistered superhumans, friend and foe alike, congregated to the X-Mansion
for sanctuary where Wolverine finally confronted Phoenix, explaining that
he had discovered she had regained her Phoenix Force abilities. When the
Phoenix wouldn't admit that she had, Wolverine tried to smack some sense
into her, causing her to revert to her Dark Phoenix persona and erase Wolverine's
knowledge of their encounter. She then left the room to discover that Cyclops,
Rachel, and Professor X had heard the commotion. Feeling ashamed, she left
the X-Men and went to New Mexico to contemplate her life while the X-Men
discussed their upcoming assault on the Sentinels' headquarters. In the middle
of their meeting, Magneto surprisingly arrived and announced that he was
there to help. The X-Men and Magneto soon infiltrated the Sentinel HQ, only
to have Magneto get shot through the spine. When all seemed lost, the Phoenix
arrived and destroyed the headquarters, prompting numerous Sentinels to attack
her. With so many Sentinels present to attack Phoenix, Nightcrawler teleported
the entire X-Men team to Phoenix's location in an effort to help destroy
the Sentinels. The act of teleporting so many people at once caused Nightcrawler
to have a heart attack and die, inspiring Shadowcat to end things once and
for all. She grabbed Colossus and phased them both into the room housing
the Master Mold. She then had Colossus hurl her into the Master Mold itself,
where she became solid, frying the Master Mold from the inside. With the
Master Mold destroyed, Phoenix destroyed the remaining Sentinels and the
surviving X-Men returned to base where Phoenix admitted to Cyclops that she
was not the real Jean Grey. Destiny soon arrived and explained that she had
seen visions that Phoenix would want to speak with her. Phoenix then asked
what Destiny saw in her future and Destiny replied that in every possible
future that she could see, Phoenix would eventually lose control once again
and death would be caused by it. Realizing that Destiny was right, Phoenix
returned to the cosmos and her true form, leaving her husband and child
forever.
Comments: Created by Chris Claremont, George Caragonne,
Rod Ramos, and Jan Anton Harps.
The divergent point for this reality occurred during the events seen
in X-Men I#137 (September, 1980).
There were numerous miscolorings going on in the course of these two
issues, some of the major ones being a scene where Phoenix's entire costume
was white and the Jim Lee-era Cyclops costume having red pouch-things going
across his chest, rather than yellow. The New Mutants' uniforms also had
a blue chest strips as opposed to yellow. I suppose you can decide whether
these were just the alternate-reality designs of the outfits or miscolorings
on behalf of the colorist.
The Thor seen in the story seemed to be the Eric Masterson Thor, who
was the Thor around the time this story was published. I suppose it could
have easily been just regular Thor with a beard. His name was never revealed.
I personally think it's Eric Masterson.
The fallen heroes' gravestones that we see in #33 included gravestones
marked with the identities of Archangel, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider, Firestar,
Sub-Mariner, Daredevil, Hulk, and Darkhawk. Aside from Archangel and Namor,
it was unknown if the others were actual superheroes in this reality, though
it was likely they used the same costumed identities that they used on
Earth-616.
Profile by
Proto-Man.
CLARIFICATIONS:
Apocalypse was very much the same as his Earth-616 counterpart. The
X-Men battled him during the eight years that passed following Phoenix's
re-powering.
He presumably had the same longevity, shapeshifting, and energy projection
powers that his 616 counterpart had.
--What If? II#33
Arcade
Arcade was basically the same as his Earth-616 counterpart, the only
exception being that the X-Men first battled him without the presence of
Cyclops, who was present during the X-Men's first battle with him on
Earth-616.
--What If? II#32
Archangel
Archangel was basically the same as his Earth-616 counterpart, having
originally been the Angel. When the Mutant Registration Act was instated,
Archangel was one of the first casualties.
Archangel had metallic wings that could fire paralyzing darts and
fold into his back.
--What If? II#32 (fb) (#32, 33d,
The
Avengers
The Avengers were pretty much the same as their Earth-616 counterparts
up until the government passed the Mutant Registration Act. When the Sentinels
were activated following the President's death, they began to eliminate any
threat to their control, the Avengers included.
They were (clockwise from top right): Vision, Captain America, Iron
Man, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and Thor.
--What If? II#33 (#33d,
Banshee
Banshee was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart. He resided at Muir
Island with Moira MacTaggert and when Phoenix was searching for the Shadow
King of Earth-616 at Muir Island, she found Banshee and Moira MacTaggert
asleep in their bed. In order to better search the Island, Phoenix telepathically
forced them to remain asleep while she searched.
He presumably had the sonic abilities of his Earth-616
counterpart.
--What If? II#33
Caliban
Caliban was very similar to his Earth-616 counterpart, the only difference
being that the X-Men first encountered without Cyclops.
Caliban presumably had the mutant tracking abilities that his Earth-616
counterpart had.
--What If? II#32
Cyclops
Scott Summers were very similar to his Earth-616 counterpart up until
Phoenix was de-powered by the Shi'ar. Upon returning to Earth, he left the
X-Men with her to get married and have a normal life. When Phoenix was kidnapped
by Magneto, Cyclops rejoined the X-Men to rescue her and he had a daughter,
Rachel, soon after returning. When he was away with the X-Men in the Secret
Wars, Phoenix was attacked by the Shadow King of Earth-616 and re-powered,
but Phoenix spent eight years lying about her powers to Cyclops and the other
X-Men. When the Mutant Registration Act was instated, Cyclops and the other
X-Men launched a counterattack against the Sentinels which resulted in victory
at the cost of a few lives. When Phoenix learned the truth of her future,
she decided to reveal her false identity to Cyclops and he explained that
even if she was not the real Jean, she was still the woman he married and
the mother of his child. Phoenix eventually opted to leave Earth in order
to prevent harm to her friends in the future.
Cyclops had the optic energy blasts that his 616 counterpart
had.
--What If? II#32 (fb) (#32, 33
The Deceased
Heroes

Worthington, Marc Spector, Daniel Ketch, Angelica Jones, Namor McKenzie,
Matthew Murdock, Bruce Banner, and Christopher Powell.
--What If? II#33 (#33d,
Destiny
Destiny was similar to her Earth-616 counterpart up until the government
passed the Mutant Registration Act. With anyone refusing to register becoming
outlaws, Destiny and many other mutants took refuge at the Xavier Mansion.
She helped the X-Men care for other mutants and following the destruction
of the Master Mold and Sentinels, she was asked by Phoenix what lie in Phoenix's
future. Destiny explained that in every possible future that she could see,
Phoenix would eventually lose control and harm the ones she loved. In an
effort to halt that, Phoenix returned to the stars, leaving her human form
behind.
Destiny had the same precognitive powers that her Earth-616 counterpart
had.
--What If? II#33
Doctor
Doom
Doctor Doom was basically the same as his Earth-616, the only exception
being that shortly after the X-Men returned from battling the Shi'ar, they
faced Doom without Cyclops being present. When the Mutant Registration Act
passed and Sentinels began eliminating anyone who threatened their takeover,
Doom sided with the Fantastic Four but was quickly eliminated along with
them.
Doom presumably had the same sorcery abilities that his 616 counterpart
had.
--What If? II#32 (#33d,
The Fantastic
Four
The Fantastic Four were pretty much the same as their 616 counterparts
up until the Sentinels took over following the Mutant Registration Act. When
the Sentinels began eliminating any one who threatened their rule, the Avengers
and Fantastic Four were some of the first to be killed.
(From left to right): Doctor Doom (not a member, but an ally at the
time), Mister Fantastic, Thing, Human Torch, and Invisible Woman.

He presumably had the same powers as his 616 counterpart.
--What If? II#32
Jean
Grey
Jean Grey was the same as her Earth-616 counterpart up until the Phoenix
copied her form and imprisoned her within a cocoon at the bottom of Jamaica
Bay. When Phoenix's powers were restored, Phoenix realized that while she
was not the real Jean, she did not want others to discover the truth. In
order to better continue being Jean, Phoenix flew down to Jamaica Bay and
destroyed the real Jean Grey, all the while Jean's memories torturing
her.
Jean had the same telekinesis and telepathy abilities that her Earth-616
counterpart had.
--What If? II#32 (fb) (#32d,
Henry Peter
Gyrich
Henry Gyrich was pretty much the same as his Earth-616 counterpart
up until President Russell was assassinated by members of the Right. The
new acting President soon phoned Gyrich, announcing that he planned to preserve
the Union. Gyrich replied that he was prepared to deal with the mutant menace
permenantly as he looked over the creation of the Mark V Sentinels.
--What If? II#33
Lilandra
Lilandra, like her Earth-616 counterpart, was Empress of the Shi'ar
Empire. When Phoenix destroyed an entire star system, Lilandra ordered that
Phoenix be dealt with by the Shi'ar, but Xavier demanded a trial by combat
with his X-Men against the Shi'ar's Imperial Guard. Following the X-Men's
defeat, Lilandra ordered a psychic lobotomy for Phoenix, which removed her
powers, effectively ending her threat. She then allowed the X-Men and Phoenix
to return home to Earth.
Lilandra presumably had the same telepathic abilities that her Earth-616
counterpart.
--What If? II#32 (fb)
Master
Mold
The Master Mold was in charge of the Sentinels' programming and creation.
Almost immediately after its creation, the Master Mold took over and determined
that the best way to protect humanity was destroy any opposition, including
most of the world's superheroes. When the X-Men staged a counterattack against
the Sentinels, Shadowcat had Colossus hurl her into the open mouth of the
Master Mold, where she solidified, killing herself to destroy the Master
Mold and the creation of more Sentinels.
Master Mold was built to control all other Sentinels and able to send
programs to all other Sentinels. It could cause the creation of other Sentinels
but programming the assembly line to manufacture more.
--What If? II#33 (#33d,
Mister
Sinister
Mister Sinister was essentially the same as his Earth-616 counterpart.
The X-Men battled him during the eight year time following the Phoenix's
re-powering.

immortality that his Earth-616 counterpart had.
--What If? II#33
Moira
MacTaggert
Moira MacTaggert was essentially the same as her 616 counterpart.

for Earth-616's Shadow King, she telepathically forced Moira and Banshee
to continue their sleep so she could better search the Isle.
--What If? II#33
Magneto
Magneto was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart up until the X-Men
returned to Earth following the Phoenix's de-powering. When Cyclops and Phoenix
left the X-Men, Magneto confronted them at their home and forced Phoenix
to accompany back to Asteroid M. While there, Magneto offered to restore
Phoenix's lost powers, but she turned away from the Phoenix Force, destroying
the machine that would have restored her. Angry, Magneto attacked her until
Phoenix made him realize that he was the reason humans feared mutants. He
menaced the X-Men one more time in the eight years that passed after Phoenix
was re-powered. Much later, after the U. S. government instated the
Mutant Registration Act, Magneto turned up to aid the X-Men in their
counterattack against the Sentinels that had taken over. During the attack,
Magneto was shot through the spine and paralyzed from the waist down, forcing
him into a wheelchair.
Magneto had the same magnetic abilities that his Earth-616 counterpart
had.
--What If? II#32 (#33,
Mastermind
Jason Wyngarde, like his 616 counterpart, was a member of the Hellfire
Club who manipulated Phoenix into becoming their Black Queen. When Phoenix
turned on them, she forced Mastermind to briefly become one with the universe,
leaving him catatonic. In his catatonic state, he became a host body for
the Shadow King of Earth-616 and recovered, his desire for revenge bringing
the Shadow King to him. Using Mastermind, the Shadow King forced Jason to
attack a de-powered Phoenix and shoot her dead, only to have the Phoenix
Force restore her. When Phoenix forced the Shadow King out of her dimension,
Mastermind was once again left catatonic.
Mastermind had the ability to generate illusions, like his Earth-616
counterpart.
--What If? II#32 (fb) (#32, 33,
New
Mutants
The New Mutants were a group of young mutants brought into the X-Mansion
by Charles Xavier. Early in their education, they were taught by Phoenix,
who had taken up a teaching role at the school. When the X-Men were whisked
away to battle in the Secret Wars, the New Mutants were as well and were
shocked when they returned to find Phoenix missing.
They were (clockwise from bottom left): Wolfsbane, Professor X (teacher),
Karma, Cannonball, Sunspot, Phoenix (teacher), and Mirage. (not pictured):
Warlock and Magma.
--What If? II#32 (#33,
Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler was essentially the same as his Earth-616 counterpart
up until Cyclops and Phoenix left the X-Men. Nightcrawler remained and battled
numerous villains alongside the X-Men until the Mutant Registration Act was
instated. When the X-Men launched a counterattack against the Sentinels,
Nightcrawler teleported the entire team into the Sentinel base, but the strain
of teleporting so many people at once caused him to have a heart attack and
die.
Nightcrawler had the same teleportation power that his 616 counterpart
had.
--What If? II#32 (fb) (#32, 33d
Omega
Red
Omega Red was basically the same as his Earth-616 counterpart. He
was one of the villains the X-Men battled in the eight years following the
Phoenix's re-powering.
He presumably had the death-causing pheromones and carbonadium tendrils
that his Earth-616 counterpart had.
--What If? II#33
Phoenix
Like her Earth-616 counterpart, Phoenix copied the form of the dying
Jean Grey and took her place in the X-Men. Soon after saving the Earth from
the effects of the M'Kraan Crystal, Phoenix was manipulated by Mastermind
into becoming the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club. Striking back, she became
Dark Phoenix and destroyed an entire star system, gaining the enmity of the
Shi'ar Empire. When the X-Men lost in a trial by combat against the Shi'ar
Imperial Guard, Phoenix was given a psychic lobotomy that kept her from accessing
her powers. Returning to Earth, she and Cyclops left the X-Men in favor of
living a normal life as newlyweds until Magneto captured her and offered
to restore her powers. She declined and destroyed his equipment and upon
returning to Earth, had a daughter whom she named Rachel and took up becoming
a teacher to the New Mutants. When the X-Men and New Mutants were away in
the Secret Wars, Phoenix was attacked by Mastermind and the Shadow King of
Earth-616, who took over Rachel's body and killed Phoenix's Jean Grey form.
The Phoenix Force restored her, however, and she drove the Shadow King from
her reality, restored Rachel to normal, and destroyed the real Jean Grey.
She then returned to the X-Men and lied about having her powers restored
for years, allowing mutant-human relations to continue to decline. She finally
grew tired of the President's anti-mutant ideas and flew to the White House,
where she telepathically forced him to change his views. The next day, the
President was assassinated and the Mutant Registration Act was instated.
Wolverine eventually confronted Phoenix and revealed that he had discovered
that her powers had been restored. She telepathically forced him to forget,
but Cyclops and Xavier had overheard the confrontation and unable to alter
her husband's mind, she left the team once again. Deciding what she had to
do, she returned in time to help destroy the Sentinels for good. After the
battle, she spoke with Destiny and asked what her future held. Destiny explained
that in every future she could see, Phoenix would eventually lose control
and hurt the ones she loved. In order to keep that from happening, Phoenix
returned to space and left her Jean Grey form behind forever.
Phoenix possessed almost limitless telepathic and telekinetic abilities
on a godlike level.
--What If? II#32 (fb) (#32, 33,
Donald
Pierce
Donald Pierce was essentially the same as his Earth-616 counterpart.
He was one of the many villains the X-Men battled during the eight years
following the Phoenix's re-powering.
--What If? II#33
David
Russell
David Russell was an anti-mutant Presidential candidate who was elected
to the office on an anti-mutant platform. Following a large amount of public
anti-mutant speeches, Phoenix grew tired of listening to him and telepathically
forced him to change his views on mutants. His sudden like of mutants saw
him assassinated by members of the Right. Following his death, the Mutant
Registration Act was instated.
--What If? II#33 (#33d,
Sabretooth
Sabretooth was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart. He was one of
the many villains the X-Men battled during the eight years following the
Phoenix's re-powering.
--What If? II#33
Sauron
Sauron was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart. During the time
that Cyclops and Phoenix had left the X-Men, Sauron had a battle against
Wolverine.
He presumably had the same hypnotic and power-draining abilities that
his Earth-616 counterpart had.
--What If? II#32
Sentinels
The Sentinels were basically the same as their Earth-616 counterparts.
They were recreated by order of the acting President to help enforce the
Mutant Registration Act but quickly turned against the government, destroying
anything they saw as a threat to their control. After destroying the Avengers,
Fantastic Four, and numerous other heroes, the X-Men launched a counterattack
which resulted in many casualties. The battle was ultimately won when Shadowcat
sacrificed herself to destroy the Master Mold and Phoenix destroyed the remaining
Sentinels.
As giant robots, the Mark V Sentinels had superhuman strength, size,
durability, the ability to project blasts of energy from their hands, and
fly via boot jets.
--What If? II#33 (#33d,
Shadowcat
Kitty Pryde was very similar to her Earth-616 counterpart. She was
a member of the X-Men for many years up until the Mutant Registration Act
passed and the X-Men launched a counterattack against the Sentinels. During
the assault, Shadowcat had Colossus hurl her into the mouth of the Master
Mold where she solidified, causing the Master Mold to explode with her inside
it.
Shadowcat had the same phasing abilities that her 616 counterpart
had.
--What If? II#32 (#33d,
The Shi'ar Imperial
Guard
Like their Earth-616 counterparts, the Shi'ar Imperial Guard were
the best of their species and lived to serve the Shi'ar Empire. When Xavier
demanded a trial by combat for Phoenix's life, the X-Men battled the Imperial
Guard and lost.
They were (from top to bottom): Smasher, Starbolt, Manta, Gladiator,
and Oracle.
--What If? II#32 (fb)
Rachel
Summers
Rachel Summers was the daughter of Phoenix and Cyclops. As an infant,
she was used a host body for the Shadow King of Earth-616 and was aged to
an adult while under his control. Upon being freed from his influence, Phoenix
restored Rachel to her proper age and Rachel lived as normal a life as a
mutant could for eight years while her telekinetic powers manifested. When
Phoenix learned of her future as a destructor, she left Rachel behind with
Cyclops as she left Earth for good.
Rachel had telekinesis.
--What If? II#32 (#33,
Warpath, Domino,
and Iceman
Warpath, Domino, and Iceman were much like their Earth-616 counterparts.
When the Mutant Registration Act was passed, they helped the X-Men battle
the Sentinels while Phoenix was gone from the team. None of them fared well,
suffering injuries during the battle.
Warpath presumably had superhuman strength, agility, and durability
that his 616 counterpart had. Domino presumably had the luck abilities of
her Earth-616 counterpart. Iceman had the ice generating powers that his
616 counterpart had.
--What If? II#33
Wendigo
Wendigo was the same as his Earth-616 counterpart. During the time
that Cyclops and Phoenix had left the X-Men, the X-Men battled him.
He presumably had the same superhuman strength, durability, claws,
and teeth that his Earth-616 counterparts have had.
--What If? II#32
White
Queen
The White Queen was the same as her Earth-616 counterpart. During
the eight years following the Phoenix's re-powering, the X-Men had a battle
against her.
She presumably had the same telepathic abilities that her Earth-616
counterpart had.
--What If? II#33
The
X-Men
The X-Men, like their Earth-616 counterparts, were a band of mutants
together for human/mutant co-existence. Following Phoenix and Cyclop's leave
of the team, the X-Men battled numerous villains and came to the aid of Phoenix
when Cyclops informed them that she had been captured by Magneto. Upon returning
to Earth, they participated in the Secret Wars and were shocked to find Phoenix
alive after she turned up missing upon their return. Eight years following,
the X-Men battled many more villains while anti-mutant hysteria hit an all-time
high. Once the government instated the Mutant Registration Act, the X-Men
struck back against the Sentinels, destroying the Master Mold and the remaining
Sentinels.
They were: (from left to right): Professor X, Storm, Rogue, Wolverine,
Havok, Archangel, Nightcrawler, Lockheed, Dazzler, Shadowcat, Colossus, Beast,
and Cyclops. (Phoenix and Rachel Summers were not members of the team, but
they lived in the Mansion and Phoenix was a teacher there.)
