History: (What If? II#57 (fb)) - During one of Frank Castle's stakeouts, he was gassed and brought before SHIELD Col. Nick Fury, who offered him a chance to use his talents to tackle bigger criminals than just hoodlums and crooks. Given the choice between SHIELD or prison, Frank Castle chose SHIELD and was given access to their arsenal and a striketeam of his own choosing. One of the first missions he sent his men on was against the Yellow Claw, whom Castle gunned down at point blank range. Returning from the mission, Castle was chewed out for not bringing back the Yellow Claw for questioning. Soon after on a mission in Madripoor, Castle opted to bring in the druglords but completely torch their buildings and supply. Once again chewed out by Fury, Castle was demoted to Chase Unit Zed, working with the recently captured. Sent on another mission, this time with Dum-Dum Dugan as the lead, Hydra surprised the agents with an attack that caused the deaths of all agents but Castle himself. Castle stayed in hiding at the Hydra base for three weeks later, deciding to leave SHIELD completely and return to his vigilante ways. He then had his old pal Microchip hack into SHIELD's files on Hydra and while SHIELD thought Castle dead along with the other agents, Frank used his old clearance codes to steal a S. H. I. E. L. D. plane. S. H. I. E. L. D. soon suspected and brought it Microchip for questioning while Castle piloted the plane to Hydra Island.
(What If? II#57) - Using a SHIELD Flight Suit, the Punisher jumped down onto Hydra Island, gunning down as many Hydra agents as he could on his way down. He then made his way to the center of the Island where he took a few gunshots while gunning down other Hydra agents. As he died, he smiled, thinking of how his war was finally over and while he would never see his family again, at least they were together.
