"EGG-BOTS"
Classification: Terrestrial technology
Creator: Egghead (Elihas Starr) (see comments)
User/Possessors: Egghead
First Appearance: Avengers I#64 (May, 1969)
Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Egg-bots were a group of at least seven robots, about human-sized, with great strength. Additionally, the Eggs-bots could fire deadly energy beams from their chest-blasters, and spoke with Egghead's voice.
History: (Avengers I#64 (fb) - BTS) - Egghead had established a space station base in Earth's orbit, equipped with a "death ray," for his plans to blackmail the United States.
(Avengers I#64 (fb)) - Egghead tried to form an alliance with gangs of the criminal underworld, most notably gangster Barney Barton -- he even revealed to Barton the coordinates of the space station's location. But when Barton refused his offer, Egghead dispatched one of his Egg-bots to capture Barton, to keep him from warning the world about his plans. The robot killed two of Barton's underlings, but Barton himself escaped.
(Avengers I#64) - After the destruction of a small mid-western town (which Egghead had forewarned, and it had thankfully been evacuated beforehand) by the space station's "death ray," Barney Barton went to Avengers Mansion to offer them his aid in stopping Egghead.
As the Avengers (Black Panther, Goliath (Clint Barton), Wasp, Yellowjacket (Henry Pym), Vision), along with Barney Barton, flew into orbit and docked with Egghead's space station to stop the villain's scheme, Egghead sent his robots to capture the heroes, but the Egg-bots were destroyed in the ensuing battle.
Comments: Created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan.
These robots were never actually called "Egg-bots" in this story; it's just I name I used to distinguish them from other robots.
To me, these robots looked a little similar to some of the Mad Thinker's robots; and Egghead was allied with the Mad Thinker in the previous issue, so maybe Egghead swiped some of the Thinker's ideas to build the "Egg-bots".
NOTE: It was later revealed at the end of this story that Barney Barton was the brother of Clint Barton (aka. Goliath, nee Hawkeye).
Also, Egghead's space station was built by the Hate-Monger and would later be used by the Weathermen. Read the comments in the Weathermen profile to learn more about this space station!
