History:
(New Mutants I#10 (fb) - BTS) - As part of the Nova Roma colony, based in the Brazilian rainforest, Senator Marcus Domitius Gallio worked to make power for himself from within the government, making silent enemies with his rival for power. Lucius Antonius Aquilla. Gallio married the powerful mutant and sorceress Selene, and she helped him secure his power. He saw potential for power when four young mutants were captured (Cannonball, Mirage (Danielle Moonstar), Sunspot, Wolfsbane).
(New Mutants I#9) - Gallio was traveling through the Senatorial baths when Aquila, who was being massaged, stopped him. They discussed the outlanders captured (Aquila's knowledge of this shocked Gallio), and Aquila asserted that the males should be used in the arena. Gallio returned to Selene, who offered to kill Aquila, but Gallio turned her down, wanting to do the deed himself. She led Gallio beneath their villa where another captive, Castro, was being kept. Gallio realized the potential for wealth if used Castro's contacts to ally with the outside lands. Selene had the females, Mirage and Wolfsbane, as well as Amara (the daughter of Aquilla) drugged. The females stood at Gallio's side as he watched Cannonball and Sunspot triumph in the arena, and, before the crowd could overreact, he publicly proclaimed that the four mutants were children of the gods!
(New Mutants I#10) - Caught up in his power and desire to become emperor, Gallio threw a parade for the mutants, and, during a feast for them, worked to convince them how much power and glory they would garner at his side. He tried convincing them that Aquila sought to be emperor and was their enemy. To further his control over them, Gallio had Castro feign an assassination attempt on the mutants, and when he was caught, claim that Aquilla put him up to it. Gallio sent his soldiers to arrest or kill Aquilla, but the mutants saved him, infuriating Gallio, though he remained silent. Aquilla was still arrested, and he vocally thanked the mutant.
(New Mutants I#11) - Still manipulating the mutants, Gallio sent some of his soldiers to find young Mirage, ignoring their suggestions that Selene had her. When Aquilla spoke against him, Gallio had another guard strike Aquilla down. Feeling threatened by Cannonball, Gallio ordered his soldiers to poison him and to administer slave potion to Wolfsbane, but before they could, Amara, whose mutant powers had awakened, burst through the floor, freeing Aquilla. The enemies attacked, including the Amazons (Nova Roman traitors who'd fled the city), and war broke out between them and Gallio's forces. The mutants turned against Gallio, and he knocked out Wolfsbane himself. He soon entered battle with Aquilla and thought his victory would be sure, but Aquilla managed to kill Gallio with a sword to the heart.
