HYPNO-GUN
Classification: Unconventional hypnosis weapon (Inhuman design)
Creator: Unrevealed
User/Possessors: Maximus
First Appearance: Fantastic Four I#82 (January, 1969)
Powers/Abilities/Functions: Using rays to flood the planet, the giant Hypno-Gun reduced the individual wills of people upon whom it had been targeted. It apparently could enslave all living souls, indicating its scope to cover not just humans, but also Atlanteans, Eternals, extraterrestrials, etc. It was massive in size with a small control room mounted atop the rear of the gun.
History:
(Fantastic
Four I#82) - Using hypno-potions to bend the Inhuman Royal Family to his
will, plus a hypno-stud taped to Lockjaw's impervious hide, Maximus
seized control of the throne of the Inhumans. He planned to use the
Hypno-Gun to enslave Earth's population with the stratagem to fire the
weapon at the point of his coronation.
(Fantastic Four I#83) - Breaking free of their cell, the Inhumans Black Bolt, Gorgon, Karnak, Medusa and Triton, as well as Crystal (who was then a member of the Fantastic Four), all rushed to challenge Maximus at the gun's helm before it could be fired.
Proclaiming himself Emperor Eternal, Maximus entered into a dramatic declaration on his ambition of subjugation and his visions of expanding his influence using the Hypno-Gun to reach into the universe so that he could rule over all. However, just before he could fire the gun, Crystal utilized her elemental powers to shatter it, stopping Maximus' initial dreams of conquest.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott.
It should be noted that the Hypno-Gun was never actually fired in the story, with its firing and effects presented only as Maximus' delusional visions. Presumably, these images were based on designs and initial weapon tests.
